“Oasis of calm”

The last stop in our car driving trip was this lovely place. The paradors had done us proud and this one didn't dissappoint. The modern room are large, have comfortable beds and plenty of space. The staff were all superb and the dining was excellent and plentiful. This is, after all, a region of great gastronomy and we enjoyed it all.

The only downside was that there was little outside of the hotel to entice one to return. By that I mean that if one wanted to wander around the environs and check out the local village or town, you'd have a fair old trek before you got anywhere worthwhile. As a stop over place, however, it is brilliant! I particularly loved the fact that they had spent much money and time preserving the roman ruins that are in the middle of the building and presented the areas so that guests can wander through the area. They had built a bridge over at ground floor level and lit the archaeological dig to enable all to view it at leisure. There are explanations on the wall of what is there.

All in all an highly recommended stopover. Try out this 17th Century former monastery!

“Peaceful Parador in the green Asturias”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 21 October 2011

we stayed there for a wedding and we enjoyed every moment. The Parador is located in a very special site next to the Sella River. hiking and canoeing are great options , as well as the delicious regional food. The Parador has two buildings, I recommend the öld¨ one , where rooms are like a museum . However the modern wing is also nice but with less charm.
Nice place to stay a couple of nights and explore the area.

Room Tip: choose the old wing and visit the little chapel attached to the building

“A Different Spain”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 5 October 2011

We used the Brittany Ferries short Parador Break designed to attract travellers between the schools going back and before the October half term. A perfect time for the 'grey pound'. We wanted a single destination, no more than 100 mile drive from Santander from which we could travel out each day. This one fitted the bill perfectly. Nestling in a long valley at the foot of the Picos de Europa mountains we found this lovely renovated monastry, serving good authentic Spanish food and wine at reasonable prices. The bedrooms were spacious and the bathrooms above average. These were in the newer part of the building and were the cheaper rooms so, presumably, even better ones were to be had in the original building. The nearby town was within easy walking distance alongside the riverbank and well worth a visit. We tried one of the 10 euro lunch menus and decided not to bother again but a steaming bowl of the local bean stew (Fabada) is an absolute must. The local tourist office was most helpful and we packed our remaining three days with visits to local mountain villages and lakes and experienced what must be some of the most beautiful scenery in Europe. A Spain we never knew existed and a much quicker journey from the arrival port than other alpine destinations are from Calais. Weddings do take place on a Saturday but we were not disturbed by any noise. However, on a return visit we would choose a midweek break to avoid the tourists.

“Like staying in a museum”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 20 September 2011

Stunning surroundings. The beauty of the historic chapel and monastery was awe inspiring. The food very rustic (massive portions) - staff very helpful. Very little English spoken - very refreshing! Bit of a hike up to the family room with the luggage. Good value relative to other Paradores. Highly recommended to stay for touring the stunning Picos de Europas.

“Peace, perfect peace”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 14 September 2011

This was our 3rd Parador on this trip - and the best. Very quiet, beautiful views of the river and the mountains and the best meal we had on our stay. It was also the cheapest of the 5 hotels we stayed in on this holiday and easily the best value for money.
We will definitely go back there.

Room Tip: Any room will do, we stayed in the cheapest and it was great.
