I recently stayed at the Despotiko as part of a vacation package to Santorini, Mykonos and Athens. The hotel has a pretty good location - just a short walk from Mykonos Town. About that walk....the hotel is located on a fairly steep hill along a heavily traveled road. There are mostly no sidewalks, so the walk to and from town can be a bit dicey, especially at night. Now about that hill....in all likelihood you will arrive by bus to the hotel. Depending on the busdriver's mood at the time you may or may not get dropped at the hotel entrance. The bus could stop 25 feet downhill or uphill on the opposite side of the busy street. The Despotiko provides NO help with luggage so you will be on your own to get your belongings to the hotel. Getting into the hotel is another problem. Since the Despotiko sits on a hillside there's a fair number of steps UP to the lobby, and again, no help from the hotel staff. Once inside, there are no elevators but lots more steps. If your suitcase is heavy or you are infirm this can be a real pain in [--], and no one at the hotel seems to care. The staff at the Front Desk is efficient but fairly unfriendly - not just my impression, but noted by other guests as well. WiFi is available, but you have to pay for it. The rooms have safes, but again, you have to pay to use them. Since the staff at the front Desk warns you that you MUST close and lock the heavy outdoor shutters to your room before going to sleep at night (a nod to the possibility of someone breaking in) it would seem to me that use of the safe should be complimentary. The lobby and dining area of the Despotiko is lovely - very nicely appointed and definitely photo worthy! Sadly, the Continental breakfast was not so lovely and not very well maintained - food didn't seem to get replenished, nor were the tables cleaned after being used. The tiny lobby bar was never open during my visit and there is no functioning restaurant on site. I had a great room with a fantastic view of Mykonos Town. The rooster living directly across from my room and the yowling cat in heat - not so great. A word of caution: most rooms have a small balcony but the ground level rooms on the courtyard do NOT and guests "share" an outdoor space - awkward at best. The rooms were kept clean daily. Now about that shower stall.....like many European showers, this one was small and had only a shower curtain to keep the water from flooding the floor. The hand-held shower fits into a bracket on the wall. So far, no problem, right? There was no problen UNTIL there was sudden burst in water pressure which literally blew the shower head out of the bracket. End result? Towels soaked, toilet paper soaked, sink surface flooded, floor flooded, walls and mirror dripping with water. For the remainder of my stay I let the water run and only used the shower head to rinse. I know this isn't a really big deal, but it was my VACATION - is decent shower too much to ask for?
All in all, I'd say the Despotiko was adequate, but if I were to go back to Mykonos I'd opt for a different facilty. This hotel was not the best and there are so many others to choose from.
Room Tip: The room directly above the entrance has a wonderful view of Mykonos Town and the windmills. Avoid t...
