“Our holiday fron hell, jan 2012”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 14 February 2012

Let me start by saying if it went on looks alone the reception and pool area looked clean and well set out, but that’s were the positives end, the suites were a good size but in need of a good clean, we had our bedding changed for the first time on the seventh night only because my wife got hold of the cleaner to point this out
The dining area was to small for the people staying during our three week stay witch meant we had to join a queue, sometimes 20 couples deep for breakfast and evening meals, there was not much of a choice in food and the choice was the same for the whole of our stay.
The location of the hotel meant we had either a long walk, bus or taxi ride to find any shops, bars or any signs of something alive.
The entertainment (haha) on a few nights we had one game of bingo witch lasted an hour and that was it for the night on all other nights (3) the acts were dull and amature and with only one barperson on, being all-inclusive you can imagine the queues.
The staff on reception made you feel sometimes you was talking to yourself, I would advise those who stay here to get a room safe as things have a habit of disappearing.
We must point out that we have holidayed in Tenerife for the past fifteen years and always stayed in 3 star hotels all of witch were far superior than the playa real resort, it is a 2 star hotel at best.

Room Tip: all suites look over the pool area, if clean passable

“Great value for money”

Booked this hotel last minute and read the reviews here so arrived with an open mind. On arrival, reception was busy with check ins, but very efficient, room wasnt ready so asked to go and have lunch and return an hour later, On returning couldn't fault them remembered me and had key waiting. Apartments are not high end but are spacious and sufficient for an average holidaymakers needs. Only stayed 5 days but found it to be excellent value for money yes the buffet is a little repetetive but what buffet isnt, its a very busy hotel so food is topped up frequently and theres enough choice for everyone, staff were helpful and friendly and the place was pretty clean. Yes it is a little tired and a former shadow of what it may have once been but there are signs that a modernisation program is underway. Overall I would stay again, dont think its quite 4* probably a very good 3* but once modernised it would definitely warrant a 4*
Thanks to all the staff at the Playa Real for a great stay.

“Excellent value”

This hotel does not deserve the bad reviews. OK, it's not top 4* but it is excellent value for money on an all inclusive break. The staff work very hard, everywhere is clean & the quantity of drinks amazing!!! We stayed in a Junior suite (poolside) which was very comfortable, although the apartments situated on the other side of the complex did look a little dreary-but it seems that improvements are being made all the time by the new owners. The location was about a 10 mins walk to the beach etc which wasn't a problem!
Overall, good value for a relaxing break in the sun-especially if you appreciate generous measures in local spirits!!!!

“good value”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 26 January 2012

Consists of two buildings.
1 – Main hotel which has approximately 100 junior suites
2- Apartment block which has approximately 70 apartments
I spent my first night in the apartment block because when I tried to book a junior suite, very much at the last minute, the hotel was full. The building was well positioned. Each apartment had a large balcony with both table and chairs and sun beds for two, and each balcony got the sun either in the morning or afternoon. The apartment was a good size and very clean. The twin beds were comfortable. The rooms were rather shabby and could do with being renovated. Some items were broken or missing, but when I reported this at reception, a maintenance man was sent immediately to repair or renew what he could. However, two things, the wardrobe drawer and the balcony table were completely broken and not repairable. In its current condition I would only consider this accommodation to be 2-3 star.
On day two I was moved to the main building and into a junior suite. The suite was spacious, stylish and modern. I could not fault anything and I would recommend always booking accommodation in the main building (approx 20 euros a day more than the apartment block).
There was a television in each accommodation but the only channels in English were BBC News and one movie channel.
You can hire pool towels (refundable deposit of 10 euros per person), and a safe (20 euros deposit + 10 euros per week rental charge). There is one heated swimming pool (still very cold) and other unheated pools. Even in January people used all of the pools. There is a very well equipped gym, a spa centre and tennis courts.
All inclusive
All inclusive consists of breakfast, lunch, dinner, snacks and several bars serving drinks. The food is good quality, well prepared and plentiful. All meals are self-service buffet style. I found all staff helpful and friendly. As I am allergic to shellfish the chefs took great care in telling me the content of all the prepared food as some dishes called vegetarian did in fact contain sea food. I only had to ask for assistance and it was there. The service in the restaurant was superb. Tables were cleared of used plates very quickly.
All inclusive premium brands.
I paid a small extra charge at my travel agent in the UK for this and it was worth it. The premium brand service gave me brand name drinks and some free cocktails in the exclusive cocktail bar, plus a free trial at the spa.
Position/Location
The area of Adeje is slightly upmarket compared to Playa de las Americas. The hotel is at the top of a quite steep hill. It takes approximately 5-10 minutes to walk down to the sea front (slightly longer to walk back!). At the sea front if you turn left, it takes you to the harbour of Porto Colon and Playa de las Americas. If you turn right you are at a very classy area with a golden sand beach and safe swimming area and beyond this is a beach of volcanic stones.
Shopping
There is an abundance of bars, restaurants and tourist shops. While at the shops beware of electronic firms offering camcorders for tiny prices like 29 euros. They are a con and are run by gangsters. You will never be sold at these prices. Never hand over your credit card or cash until you have the item you want to purchase, fully boxed and with all the extras, in your hands. If something seems too cheap, it probably is. Don’t be sucked in. It is cheaper to buy off a legitimate dealer online than from the shops in Tenerife. The local market is held on Thursday and Saturday and is 5-10 minutes walk from the hotel.
Extras.
Our booking allowed us one night’s meal in the small a la carte restaurant and it was very good and much calmer and quieter than the main restaurant.
We also had one free session at the spa. I would recommend wearing flip flops for this as the floor surface is hard on the feet. The normal cost for an hour long spa session is 10 euros.
Entertainment.
The evening entertainment is very poor. I found the animation staff to be very enthusiastic and energetic but most of the guests were not interested in what was on offer. However, children were well catered for.
Summary
The guests were mainly German or Scandinavian with some British. I found all the staff to be friendly, courteous and well mannered, but then so was I. Unfortunately the same could not be said for all of the guests, many of whom were rude to the staff.
All things considered, this hotel tries hard. Some aspects are more like a three star than a four star, but I had a great holiday for not too much money. Good value.

Room Tip: always ask for junior suite and not apartment
