We have been, between Wendy and I, five times to the Jardin del teide. When you first arrive at the hotel, you are met with a large and impressive reception, the staff are courteous, and English is spoken well. Your cases will betaken to the room for you.
The rooms all follow the same theme, and on the whole they are clean, with large beds, most have a balcony, albeit your view will vary from looking over one or more of several building sites, to stunning views over The Atlantic, and ranging from Las Americas/Los Cristianos up to Los Gigantes. Again, most rooms are equipped with TV, Fridge (There is always a plentiful supply of bottled water, when in reception, go into the bar and look left, a fidge is there with 100's of bottles) and the obligatory plastic sheets for those who imbibe too much on the all inclusive beer.
The grounds are fantastic, you are set on a steep, south facing cliff, the hotel rises in total about 12 storeys if you include the Mirador, which I would advise anyone to go up to watch the sunset, it is beautiful. The bottom pool is large, and I would say you can get a space there 95% of the time, the pool is NOT heated at the moment, it is the larger of the three pools (if you include the kiddies splash pool as one). The bottom pool has a bar/grill area where it seems Melia have taken some criticisms on the chin and covered the food up...At last! A service of burgers, sausage, chips, with toasted sandwiches, fruit and some pastas and salad is available, mostly freshly cooked, albeit in the quieter times, they do let the food sit too long. The bar is run by the ever smiling, and very friendly Beatriz, her Sangria is gorgeous, freshly made every day. Beatriz is one of the stars of the Hotel, alongside two cheeky Morrocan guys who work in the main dining room and bars of a night, Salem and Habib. I would advise you to have a laugh and a joke with these two, and "look after" them, the service you will receive is second to none, fantastic people.
The top pool is heated, and more for families, being shallower, you can still get alcohol there from the bar in reception, this is situated next to the main dining area....
Following on from some rather unfair comments about the food, I would rate the food as 5.5/10. Some days the food is fantastic, this would seem to be as the weekend approaches, being an Island, there is naturally a lot of fish, I would advise you to stay away from the Sole as it is a lot bonier than the Dover/Lemon Sole we have here in the UK, quite simply, it's all bone and no flesh. There was also some Tuna marinated in Soy sauce and sesame, the sauce would have done the potholes on the M6 proud. High points were Green lipped Mussels with fresh cruidities, Rolled Veal with Mushroom, and the wonderful Gazpacho soup available at Lunch and Dinner. The rice is hit and miss, being either just right or dried out and crusty. Melia, if you read this, sort your food out and see paragraphs after the staff one for some tips on your hotel.
The staff, as mentioned previously, are always friendly, and unless you are a continental in your manners, and treat them like dirt, will be pleasant, advise you on local attractions, and generally look after you with courtesy and a smile. They won't if you are rude, discourteous or see yourself as their lord and master.
Adeje is, at the moment, a VERY nice place to holiday, the Duque Beach is lovely and clean, ideal from the hotel. It is upmarket when looking at restaurant menus, so don't expect fish and chips at 5 Euro. There are also several shopping centres, one, the Plaza Del Duque is wonderful, but take a clean credit card or a big wallet of cash, all designer, all high end.I do hope that they will keep the line between Las Americas/Torviscus and Adeje, although it does seem already to be more "Blackpoolized" than the last time we stayed (18months ago), please, don't let Adeje become another Las Americas.
Tips for the hotelier? Your Hotel is starting to look a little tired, the furnishings in rooms and bar areas are getting "dinked" and scratched, the taps coating is wearing off, the enamel is wearing through in baths. The guys on the bar in the day area need to stop preening themselves and take the workload off some of the girls.. The grounds are immaculate, the staff on the whole are great, Sort the food and refurbish the Hotel (not a mean feat I understand) and you have a winner.
Please excuse any spelling and grammar mistakes I may have made in writing this review.
