It is 12 months since my last visit so it was interesting to see some changes at this quiet hotel. As usual, on arrival you are offered a drink at reception and are then shown to your room. This time it was room 1408 overlooking the sea. Very nice room as expected.
However it has to be said that a most terrible odour pervaded the corridor outside. One day we caught the maids spraying the corridor with freshener but as the corridors are largely open to the elements, it did seem a rather pointless exercise. We heard that some people had asked to be moved but we didn’t find it that offensive. As the hotel did not smell last year, we assumed it was a temporary problem that the hotel will resolve.
Although the room was as lovely as expected, we did have some issues with the service. Bearing in mind that this is a “five star” hotel, I was surprised that there was no hair conditioner. We phoned up for some and reception said it was no longer offered as standard, however they did find me some. Some flannels would have been nice as well. Some days our water was not replenished, so we had to remind them and then one evening the maid arrived at 10 o’clock to turn down our beds, when we had already gone to bed. On a positive note, reception were helpful with any issues we had. (e.g. quickly fixing our safe when it would not work due to a low battery).
As the hotel is child free, the hotel, grounds and swimming area are gorgeous and quiet. Sunbeds and umbrellas were always available and the pool boy is more than willing to move the beds and umbrellas to wherever you wish to sit. It is so peaceful around the pool, and one reason for which we will always return to this hotel.
La Pergola, the on-site restaurant by the pool, still only opens at 1 o’clock, so you have to go and leave the hotel if you want an earlier lunch. The prices though have been reduced, so that a club sandwich or burger is now under 10 euros, and still comes with chips. So it is quite a large lunch after a very sumptuous breakfast. The food is very good and the waiters provide a lovely service.
However if you do want a lighter lunch (both physically and on your wallet), then go out of the hotel via the main entrance to the main road and turn left. Walk about 7 minutes and you will find a group of shops (supermarket) and a cafe. This has only been open a couple of months and is run by an English couple. A tuna sandwich, cheese and ham toastie, a couple of drinks came in under 10 euros and suited us better than a large lunch.
We always ate out in the evening, so can’t comment on any of the restaurants at night.
We also noticed that the hotel now possesses two computers for internet access, and this time we never had to wait to go on. So the hotel had listened to what people had said about internet access.
Overall, this is a very nice hotel, not a true five star, but if you want a quiet and relaxing experience and some winter sun, then you can find it here. Already booking for next year.
