“christmas break”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 8 January 2012

stayed at the pastures in mexborough over christmas 2011. stayed for B/B and have to say the rooms, staff and food were excellent.
ate evening meals over the car park at the pastures lodge and the food was plentiful and well cooked with a huge variety on the menu and very reasonable prices, would suit budget pockets to splashing out a little
the hotel room was large with a magnificent shower!!
Ideal location for seeing a lot of south yorkshire, either shopping or golfing to watching the horse racing at Doncaster

“Lovely hotel, great staff, ideal location”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 2 January 2012

Stayed over Christmas weekend. Very nice hotel, well appointed and spotless rooms of a good size. Only had breakfast, which was excellent, but good reports about the food from other residents. Service from staff excellent which, given it was Xmas Eve, Xmas Day and Boxing Day, was surprising. Plently of parking and good views (you can see Conisbrough Castle from the restaurant).

Would have got 5 stars, except as is so often the case, the hotel obviously consider smokers to be a lower life form, and not worth catering for. The sign in the bedroom warning of a £100 should smokers have a sneaky cigarette out of the window (erm - most smokers respect non-smoking establishments without threats...) may have been OK if it pointed you to where you could smoke - maybe a nice shelter with a heater in the grounds? Nope, a metal bucket right outside the front door. No shelter at all and spoils the look of the hotel. A shame!

“Good value, quiet hotel, close to town centre”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 5 December 2011

We stayed at this hotel for two nights (Friday and Saturday) - we were booked into a double room with breakfast included. The location was nice - the breakfast restaurant overlooked the water and hills beyond (though be aware that walking along the tow path the dog walkers clearly have no respect for the adage of "picking up after your dog! Yuk!)

The room was on the Ground floor and on the front side of the building - this meant that it was a little dark, and this was not helped by the small window. The room was furnished to a good standard - two chairs, desk with reading light, flat screen TV, tea and coffee making facilities, large wardrobe and large shower room with WC (no bath though sadly!). The room and bathroom were very clean and well appointed and the bedding had crisp white sheets and additional pillows. The only "downside" was that I could feel the mattress "buttons" through the bottom sheet.

The TV had limited channels - though again, good enough for our stay. We both slept well, and despite being on the Ground Floor, fellow guests were quiet, and we were not disturbed by too many banging connecting doors and car doors (especially since our room faced the car park).

Breakfast was good and varied - a good selection of fresh fruit (strawberries, pineapple, apple, orange, fruit salad), tinned fruits (prunes, grapefruit), locally produced yogurts (no cheeses or hams for those of you who like the European style breakfast), cereals, cake muffins, toast, croissants, and a good cooked selection (eggs, bacon, sausages, black pudding, beans, tinned tomatoes, grilled tomatoes, mushrooms, hash browns and fried bread). You could also order porridge, and poached or boiled eggs, and even a vegetarian cooked breakfast and they served coffee and tea at the table. I was impressed that they could also offer gluten free options, and even diabetic friendly condiments.

The waiting service was friendly and helpful WHEN ASKED (they did do alot of standing around and chatting to each other I noticed!) - AND they were very slow refilling coffee and tea. I had to ask for a second cup of coffee more than once.

On the second breakfast morning, when we ordered porridge, it was sadly inedible (not cooked properly and floury in taste - how did they manage that?!), and not at all as yummy as the previous morning! But when the staff were asked for something, they were quick to fulfil the request, and so overall I was happy.

I would stay at this hotel again - I did not try the complimentary option of the Dearne Leisure Centre (which was in fact a car ride away I think), but for the price we paid (£129 for two nights) it was good value.

“excellent hotel and staff”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 27 November 2011

only down side was the bed not used to being able to feel the springs. we stayed one night as we were attending a funeral the next morning and the reception was being held there. it is more of a business hotel than a holiday hotel. would stay again if we were in the area. breakfast was excellent all hot and plenty of choice, we had our evening meal in the pub which is all part of the hotel, good average pub grub at pub prices. all the staff were friendly and helpful. If you need to arrange somewhere for a large amount of people to come back to after a funeral this is the place to go.

“Friendly and good value”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 16 November 2011

I stayed here while away with work, my company has an account with Premier Inn, but this was slighly cheaper for bed and breakfast, and local to the customer I was visiting, so managed to get booked in here instead!

The room was what I would expect for the price, just the usual double bed and desk and it did have a proper wardrobe with sliding doors. I liked the fact that bathroom had a large shower cabinet instead of a bath.

I ate in Reeds one night, and really enjoyed it. It's a bit more expensive (£15-£18 for a main course) but I'd rather pay that for a main course than get 3 courses for the same price but a lot less quality. I stayed here after being stuck in Premier Inns for the rest of the week, and enjoyed having a different, slightly healthier choice, instead of the usual stodgy burger or steak menu. (I had a lovely sea bass fillet)

Note that this restaurant is closed Mondays, so I resorted to the pub across the car park, more like the usual pub menu. I ordered fish and chips and thought it was OK. It's part of the hotel, so everything can be charged to your room.

Breakfast was a buffet similar to most, but it seemed to be well cooked (Fried eggs in particular not over or under done - just right!) and according to the menu was full of local produce.

All the staff were friendly, but not overbearing. When travelling alone I hate when I get pestered too often to check everything is OK!

A clincher for me is free wifi, as in all Best Westerns! All for less than the local 'Premier' Inn.
If I'm ever in the area I'll be back here!

Room Tip: Rooms at the back look out onto trees and a canal. I slept with the window on the security latch and...
