My wife and I and my sister-in -law were all inclusive for 7 nights from 2 to 9/1/2012. We booked the holiday through Thomas Cook on 15/10/2011. We were promised rooms with a sea view. On arrival we were allocated adjacent rooms looking on to a towering, volcanic ash covered slope and the roadway leading to and from the underground carpark. The balcony was in the shade and the strong wind was whipping up small particles of the volcanic ash and I could feel them hitting my face and bare arms.
Obviously we complained and after standing our ground and waiting a couple of hours until 14.30, we got adjacent rooms with a partial sea view and some sunshine. We enjoyed the break, the weather and the food which was excellent. Unfortunately this hotel is a victim of it's size. The dining room is massive and reminds me of a very large works canteen or what I image the dining room would have been in a Butlin's holiday camp, but not a 4 star hotel.
Some evenings we felt we were being hustled out to make way for the second sitting. The dining room staff in general seemed disinterested and impersonal and they were constantly changing. This may have been because the Christmas festivities were in full swing with the 6 January being the main day in Spain. Consequently staff had to work during the national holidays and the Hotel may have been relying on agency staff during this period. It is the first time in 22 years that we have never given a tip at the end of our holiday to the waIter, simply because we never got to know any of them due to being in different parts of the vast dining room and the constant turnover of staff. I compliment Patricia and Jorge, two young members of the managerial (?)staff who were always bright , enthusiastic and gave a genuinely friendly welcome at the entrance to the dining room. All inclusive, in our opinion, was not value for money. The local spirits are unpalatable. To buy a normal blend of Scottish whisky in the Show Bar cost 5 euros. My wife and her sister, after only a sip of the local brandy and lemonade, left their drinks and went to the Piano Bar, which appears to be a franchise within the hotel, where they were charged 17 euros for two brandies (Martell) and lemonade. A litre of Martell costs about 24 euros and a litre of Grouse whisky costs 11 euros locally. These prices are retail and an hotel such as this with its sister hotels could buy these spirits at a low cost price. In the Show Bar there were invariably queues with up to 20 people waiting in the queue and they never seemed to have pint glasses. Any hotel I have been in has a list of Cocktails with photographs showing what they look like. In this hotel there was a list but no photographs.
The cocktail was just a coloured liquid in a slim spirits glass with no embelishments such as fruit, coctail sticks or little cocktail brollies. The 3 shows which we watched for a while were poor, but this again may be due to the time of the year. We eventually went to local Bars where drinks were cheaper and the entertainment very good.
The bedrooms and the bathrooms are very spacious and the chambermaid service was excellent and in this respect it was 4 star. Needless to say we did tip the chambermaid. The elevator system is the best I have experience and that includes 3 Hilton hotels which I have been in.
We paid £1292 and my sister-in-law paid £779 for 7 nights all inclusive. While I appreciate there are the cost of the flights and other charges included in the final price I still do not think it was value for money.
Room Tip: The hotel is "U" shaped with the two arms stretching down to the pool and the sea. In the...

Dear Michael D,
Thank you for sharing your comments about your stay at Beatriz Playa & Spa in the travel community Tripadvisor.
I am glad you finally got the rooms of your taste and that you liked the weather and the food. About the dinning room we try place the staff always in the same areas, although they all have two days off and obviously we have to cope. Thank you for your mention of Jorge and Patricia. Jorge is the headwaiter and Patricia is PR for the restaurant.
We appreciate your tip about the photographs for the cocktails and will work on it.
Thank you once more for your compliments on chambermaid service and elevator service.
Kind regards,
Eric Dufosset
