We have just returned from a 10 day stay at the Vista Mar, booked with Monarch Holidays. Although very basic the apartments were spotlessly clean, and we only had one day out of the ten that we did not have maid service.
The view from the front of our apartment (32) was fantastic, beautiful seaview however the rear was a 24 hour garage and the Spar on a main road, and we had to keep the bedroom curtains closed all the time as the flats opposite look straight in! The noise from the traffic takes a bit of getting used to and means you cannot open the windows for any length of time.
Security was not a big issue for us, the balcony door was a key lock as well as the door into the apartment with a second key. We arrived at 8.30 ish to find a welcome note, our key and a map with local amenities marked on it taped to the reception post box - this was not ideal! There are cctv cameras overlooking the pool and the front gate.
The pool is a problem, my partner is a non swimmer and the pool is about 6' deep, so daily cool down dips were hair raising, totally unsuitable for children.
The walk back up from the main avenida along the beach is a 90 degree hill, although short a daunting prospect for anyone with poor mobility.
The walk to the harbour is a much gentler slope, we ate there every night and very well, finishing up at Scotch Corner for a few drinks before bed, friendly service! We used most of the restaurants around the harbour for dinner and can recommend the food at Mar Casa Benito (tuna with oregano - mm mm) and El Caherjo Rosa (seafood paella - wow), although they were all good except Los Marineros - expensive and very poor service! Prices vary slightly from restaurant to restaurant and the menu's are very similiar with each having a speciality dish to set them apart from each other.
Our trips this time were only to Cuevas de las Verdes (fascinating) and the three island tour to Fuertaventure and Los Lobos - while beautiful with an amazing beach, Playa de la Conchas, the island itself is bleak, volcanic and our tour guide got food poisoning from the paella she ate on Los Lobos! Eat on Fuertaventura before taking the ferry to Lobos, worth the trip for the beach and the view back to Fuertaventura. Take drinks/water with you, there is nothing available when you get off the ferry from Fuertaventura to Lobos!
We have had an amazing 10 days, this was our second visit to Lanzarote previously having stayed at Atalaya Apartments in 2006. We arrived to a mini freak heatwave of 35 degrees so have come back very tanned and very relaxed.
We would not return to Vista Mar but do not let this put you off, we just like a few more home comforts and a 24 hour reception - would be perfect for a base for those on a budget to visit the island and its attractions!
