We have arrived to this hotel from safari and started comparing right away, luxury was gone Hotel is on a long beach , with other hotels on right and left, Beach crawling with annoying local population, sitting, waiting , starring flipping mouth at tourists, no escape.!!!! And it is very difficult to avoid them, something should be done about this !!!!! i wanted enjoy water and sand in peace not to swat at lazy locals, beach was absolutley covered in seaweed and weaving between dirt and locals was a challenge!!!!!!. weather was just perfect, windy, stormy, cool, we had open windows at night ( 2 floor). Do not order a la carte ( if possible) or you will be waiting for a long time for dinner, open buffet preffered, rooms are simple, big , and bathrooms nice, go "deep sea " fishing, but choose your captain wisely. once is enough, I will not be comming back, reason ? locals. I dont pay to be harassed... small.boutiqe hotel status????? you sure???? really??????really?.........?

Room Tip: for those who are looking to relax ha..ha..ha..go in september, it is stormy season, pick rooms dir...

“Too Clicky at Christmas”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 10 January 2012

We arrived after a safari in the Masai Mara in between Christmas and New Year. We received a lovely welcome from Simon and were immediately shown to our rooms and given cool towels and a drink. The Hotel is in a stunning location, white sand blue sea and very hot, the pool area, bars and restaurant are immaculate and the service very good. We were in the South Wing which unfortunately has seen better days, decor 70's Spanish not very luxurious for the money, the bath was chipped with rust on and furniture is sparse. I understand the North Wing is more modern and nicely decorated. We soon discovered that the hotel was full of families (older children not kids) who all knew each other and go there year after year, it became obvious that no-one was going to talk to a couple on their own and we felt very out of it. New Year Gala was very good, food amazing however this was a black tie do which everybody knew about apart from us so we felt very conspicuous. There were only 3 tables with 2 people on and we only got to speak to one of these couples the day we were leaving. Do not go to this hotel at Christmas and New Year unless you are going with a large group, you will feel quite lonely.

Room Tip: Insist on North Wing

“Excellent place to stay, excellent fishing”

I have stayed at Hemingways five or six times now and continue to return. Lovely clean rooms, super friendly and efficient service. Excellent meals. A great welcome every time. The horrible journey from the UK is soon forgotten!

As a keen salt-water angler it is the best of my many fishing locations.

I prefer the North wing of the hotel. The rooms are smaller but are very well laid out. Beach is fabulous white sand.

I would recommend a safari trip.

Room Tip: My preference is for a room in the North wing

The food is delicious and the rooms very clean.
We'll definately come back toHemmingways to enjoy all this again.
Whenever we meet people planning for holiday we always recommend Hemmingways.

“Dismayed !!!”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 19 December 2011

I was booked at Hemingways on the 16th and 17th of December in one of their Junior Suites. I am a Kenyan Resident living in Mombasa.
I arrived at the entrance to the hotel at 12:30 PM where the security guard did not let me in as my name was not reflecting in his roster, after having argued with him for 10 mins he finally let me in.
I parked my car at the steps to the reception, no one to carry my bags so without kicking up a fuss my wife grabbed the overnighter and I got the suitcase, one of the gardeners then upon seeing this called someone from the reception, a guy came running down and then asked one of his female attendants to carry my bags up. I stopped this, and ended up carrying the overnighter myself while Sir Walter carried up the suitcase.
Now at the reception we were greeted by a very weary looking woman, who would rather we were not there, when I told her about the incident at the gate she said "ok" and walked into the small room connected to the reception, after 10 mins of waiting (note we have not been able to check in yet!) a man walks out and apologizes and then tell's me to "not make an issue about it" So I am now more than a little ticked off !!!
After waiting for a further 30 mins at the reception with no news about our room my wife finally looses her patience and asks one of the receptionists what the problem was, we were then told to wait for another 20 mins till our room became ready.
Having heard this I finally snapped I told the receptionists that we were leaving to find alternate accommodation, she simply said "ok" all this was happening in full view of whom I think was a front office manager, a guy called "Om" who had obviously exhausted his English by giving us a "you are very welcome" line because he did not say a thing.
My wife and I then proceeded to carry our bags ourselves to our car loaded them in and left. No one from the hotel bothered to stop us, no one from the hotel had the decency to call me to apologize. Totally shocked at this callousness !!!
We then drove to Malindi and booked into the excellent OCEAN BEACH RESORT.

I suppose Hemingway's must only cater to foreigners and they must be doing quite well for themselves to treat the locals like cr*p.
