“Well run establishment”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 21 September 2010

We stayed at the Hostellerie on a cycling tour, where we spent our first and last night. We were so pleased to get back. Excellent service and a warm welcome. The bedrooms and bathrooms were spotless. The food was excellent - beautiful dining areas. Lovely setting with some river views. The Chateau in Chaumont is well worth a visit - wonderful bio-diverse, organic gardens. I agree with all Louis from London has said in a previous review.

“Comfort, great food and a warm welcome”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 27 August 2010

We stayed here for only one night of an 8-day walking/cycling tour and received the warmest welcome and the best room of our entire holiday. The hotel has very well-appointed and well-cared-for public areas (even free internet when many of the 2-star places we were staying didn't even have phones!) and our room was extremely spacious, spotless and comfortable. Dinner was excellent, with the best 'chariot du fromages' we have enjoyed in ages. Special mention should also be made of the welcome - all of the staff (some English-speaking, some not) were very friendly and eager to help. The location is also superb, only a few steps from the banks of the Loire and at the foot of the Chateau (at which the annual Garden Festival was a real highlight. All in all a very pleasing part of our holiday. We will definitely try to return.

“Great location for Chateau de Chaumont & Loire”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 3 August 2010

This hotel has a great location right next to the Chateau de Chaumont, and was a welcome stop on our cycling tour. Dominique, the proprietress, was extremely friendly and showed us to our room which was clean but a bit on the small side. Being late July it was also quite hot but had the benefit of an electric fan. The ensuite has shower and toilet. Other than the location, the best feature was the 17m swimming pool with sunbeds. The pool was refreshingly cool and quite popular at times. Situated near the Loire, there were pleasant evening walks and plenty of parking by the hotel if needed. Dinner was served under shady trees by the road, a bit noisy at times. I love French food but dinner wasn't the best feature of this hotel. The service was also slow at times, however, the wine list wasn't too expensive. The breakfast was more than adequate with lovely croissants, fresh fruit salad, orange juice and coffee promptly and cheerfully served. There was free wifi internet and use of a computer if you wish. If you stay here, do take a day to enjoy the fantastice chateau and gardens, well worth the 15 euro cost of the combined ticket. With the gardens opening at 1000 and the amazing annual garden festival there's plenty to do even for people who wouldn't normally spend time visiting gardens and stately homes! All in all, well worth a visit.

“Do not miss this lovely place by the Chateau de Chaumont!”

Had a lovely stay for a couple of days in the Hostellerie du Chateau in Chaumont this autumn. Perfect location to visit all the Loire valley Chateaux... Warm and welcoming atmosphere, very good food - would strongly recommend the lamb in the "menu gourmand", confortable and clean room overlooking the Loire river. Would love to come back in the summer, as the good sized pool is probably very pleasant after a day of sightseeing!

“Lovely hotel, poor food”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 14 September 2009

We chose this hotel on the basis of Tripadvisor reviews, and were encouraged on arrival to observe a middle-aged lady balancing on flower-troughs to clean each remote corner of windows and window-frames. Sure enough the hotel was spotless and the welcome was excellent. Location is also very good, directly opposite entrance to Chateau Chaumont, which is not the most exciting Loire Chateau but still worth a look, if only for the Chelsea-like garden show which seems to be on permanent display there. So all good so far. But things started to weaken as we ordered dinner. Service was efficient and pleasant if a little impersonal. We just ordered a main course each - for me a duck special (I was asked, "vous avez tres faim?") and for Catherine a beef sirloin. Both arrived in a soggy bed of sauteed potatoes. The duck was an extraordinary affair, including sliced breast, the most unappetising piece of foie gras I have ever eaten, mushrooms and other stuff which I could not identify, all shoved into the entire duck carcase, and garnished with a ladder of what appeared to be pretzel-dough (the sirloin also enjoyed this garnish). Altogether an exercise in French country cooking gone horribly wrong. Then just to prove that this wasn't a temporary aberration, the next morning breakfast was also very poor. In short, a lovely hotel, but eat elsewhere!
