“In spite of the mud - fabulous!”

Lesson 1: Don't blindly follow your GPS - ours seems totally confused by Chateau D' Etoges postal code and got us within a couple of kms and then led us onto a tiny track, which we assumed was en route to the hotel. The track became a grass path and then all of a sudden we were tyre deep in a farmers field!! (Sincere apologies to the farmer near Etoges as we had to dig ourselves out! - on the funny side I can just imagine his face when he spots the tyre tracks and mud ruts in his beautiful field!!) .... back on the road we ignored our GPS which was squawking at us to go back up the same muddy track and finally found a sign leading to Etoges. Suddenly the Chateau was easy to find! I checked in to a very friendly and welcoming reception and we were shown around the chateau and to our very pleasant room overlooking the moat at the back. We love hotels with ambience and history so specifically booked into this section. The hotel is warm, our room was perfectly comfortable and the bathroom had plenty of hot water to wash away the mud! My only criticism is that the towels are a bit thin (not old, just thin) and I prefer a duvet to a blanket. Not wanting to venture out again after our eventful day we ate in the restaurant that night which was suberb. Breakfast was adequate but not spectacular. We were offered wi-fi on arrival which is great and between that and free parking one of my criteria for booking / or not booking a hotel - just a note although we were able to access the internet we were unable to send or receive emails (i checked with our service provider who said there was nothing wrong from our side and that "it's a maverick practise of some hotels and internet cafes in a bid to save bandwidth from spamming virus infected computers" - Must be true because at our next hotel stop and free wi-fi our email worked perfectly! Having said all of this ... I still rate the place highly because this is not a mod con hotel but one with history....a moat with a Swan and ducks (my husband had duck in the restaurant??), gorgeous weathered stone tiles that tell a story and genuine good, friendly service....besides it created a story that I will be telling for years!!

Room Tip: All the rooms are unique, we had one at the back and the cascading water in the moat lulled me to sl...

“France as it should be”

I stayed here despite reading trip advisor as last year there were a couple of very negative revues but a friend (one of France’s premier Champagne producers) recommended it and he has never mislead me before.
I stayed in one of the older rooms in the chateau rather than a pricier newer room in the orangery as I prefer the ambience – oh and because they were absolutely full and it was the only room available! It was charming but tatty but please remember Basil Fawlty’s words of wisdom, “Only the true upper classes appreciate tat”. The room was just about large enough to swing a cat around - not that I did of course - and the bathroom was typically French, no, not that bad but certainly not up to a modern British hotel but adequate and quite large. The huge stand-alone noisy air-conditioner with a red hot tube out of the window was not so acceptable but as I said, this was the last room available and the cheapest at that so c’est la vie. The plus of the room being that it had a beautiful view over the moat and surrounding countryside from its top floor position– the minus of having a top floor room is that there is no lift but it’s only three or four floors up and the trip up the stairs is enjoyable if you love walking on hundreds of years old, wide oak planks and taking in the ornaments and paintings.
During the day, weather permitting you can take a small rowing boat around the moat which is actually more fun than it sounds but the real reason for staying at this place is the restaurant. I shared dinner with two American wine growers and we all like to think we know our food and wine so without spending half an hour describing the dinner please just take it from me that the food, the wine list and the service is superb. They were a little upset by the over the top praises of some other American guests who were trying to get into the kitchen to thank the chef but it simply added to the entertainment as far as I was concerned. The restaurant staff and the sommelier were professional and friendly, I could only assume if anyone had a complaint that the guest was someone who was very difficult to please!
A dinner for 3 with wine was about €320 but the food was about half so budget for 50 – 75 Euros each for food and you’ll be about right.
I read that someone was upset that the staff didn’t let them drink their own wine in the room and that the food and wine at the Chateau were expensive. A useful point. I had a boot full of Grand Cru Champagne and my own glasses so managed to blag a bucket of ice. Maybe some subtlety is required if you want to quite rightly enjoy some local wine in your room so pre-prepare!
Mentioning a boot full of goodies reminds me of another very big benefit of Château D’Etoges, the excellent private car park.

Room Tip: Book Early if you are fussy about having a nice room.

“Absolutely perfect”

After many years of searching we have found the perfect place to stop on our way between Calais and the Alpes. This place has charm, comfort, delightful staff plus wonderful food and, of course, champagne. The Chateau is ancient and surrounded by a moat in the vinyards. There are boats on the moat to while away an afternoon and bicycles to borrow to wander the countryside. Unlike many chateaux I've stayed at this one isn't pompous. It is quaint and relaxed with an unspohisticated character yet beautifully furnished in a shabby chic style with log fires, art works and books scattered throughout the reception rooms. In addition to meat dishes the Orangery Restaurant includes a proper (normally unheard of in France) vegetarian set menu for non-meat eaters. We dined on the delicious home made mushroom ravioli in a tarragon puree, an olive and tomato tart, selection of the most beautifully prepared individual vegetables and a herby egg dish. This was followed a beautiful cheese trolley and a dessert of baby pears in a chestnut mousse. The breakfast buffet the next morning had a most wonderful selection of fruits, jams and breads as well as hot dishes. Coffee was served in antique silver pots, the juice freshly squeezed and champagne freely available to serve yourself!

Best place ever.

Room Tip: We had the cheapest room- Jaune Chambre. It was lovely, rustic with wooden shutters overlooking the...

“Wonderful stay”

We stayed at the Chateau for a single night (using a Bongo voucher) and it was a memorable experience. We arrived on saturday around noon, as expected our room wasn't ready yet. Still we were offered a small tour of the castle. Since we hadn't eaten yet, the staff at the reception immediately offered some suggestions and even called ahead to the restaurant we chose to make sure there was a table free for us.

When we got back and were taken to our room, we were pleasantly surprised: since we were there on a Bongo voucher, we didn't expect much from the room. However, the room was quite large, with a very big, comfortable bed. The bathroom was also quite big, but strangely enough had a rather small bath tub and no shower (even though there was plenty of room).

Dinner (the menu Quatre Saisons) was also included in our voucher (except for drinks of course) and this too was quite the experience. Excellent service, friendly staff and wonderful food and wine all came together.

The only "downside" is the location: there isn't a lot to do within walking distance, so you always need your car. Of course, that's to be expected when you stay at a castle in a small village.

it wasn't cheap, but it was worth every cent we spent there.

“Stunning Looking Chateau but over priced food and wine”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 6 January 2012

We stayed one night to break up our trip to the Alps. The Chateau looked beautiful as we drove up the gravel drive. The room allocated was very small and functional. The Chateau was not busy so I am not sure why we were allocated a suite called Louise that I think would be one of the more basic rooms, up a small staircase. The interior was traditionally French, pretty but a bit tried. We dined in the Orangery and had the set meal for 38 Euro per person. However, by the time you have factored wine it the bill was over 160 Euro for dinner. Food was good, service excellent, not a lot of atmosphere and wine ridiculously overpriced.
