“Ugh - sort of.”

My husband and I were looking for a cheap overnight option for La Linea/Gibraltar, and chose the Hotel Mediterraneo. Like many of the reviewers said, it's far from great but it is cheap. Having said that, we instantly regretted not paying a bit more for a better place: the bed sagged, the rooms need to be upgraded, the check-in clerk was less than friendly, and the free breakfast was substandard in a country whose hotels normally offer excellent breakfast buffets. Having said that, the room was quiet, bathroom was nice, and it's 15 minutes by foot to the Gib border. I guess you get what you pay for.

“Good alternative to staying in Gibraltar”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 7 December 2009

About a 25 minute walk from The frontier with Gibraltar, the Hotel is much cheaper than any in Gibraltar. It is situated overlooking the beach. All double rooms are Sea facing with a balcony, singles are not but despite booking a single I asked for a double and was given one at no extra cost. The room was clean and large with a Bath. Breakfast was a basic cold buffet but adequate. The staff I found friendly and attentive. There is a Bar and Restaurant although I didn't use either. There is a small supermarket in the next block and a few restaurants nearby. Recommended.

“No way Jose”

We gambled to stay at this Hotel firstly because it was just for a night, and secondly for the location in front of the bay and near to Gibraltar... but it was not worth it.
The hotel looks much better in the photos at booking but you will be terribly disappointed when actually getting there.

It looks worn and dated, and so did the room. They actually allow pets for an extra, and we could hear a small dog yap a couple of times in the next room, but that didn't really annoy us as he was pretty quiet the rest of the time. More annoying was the cigarette smoke coming from the next room...
We noticed that there was a "No Smoking in the building" (in Spanish) sign in Reception, but we were told that smoking was allowed in the rooms. "It's just for a night, we though"...

We also had to ask for the TV remote in the Reception (only Spanish channels, btw) although it was almost falling to pieces, filthy and tapped up.
The staff was friendly but there is nothing else positive to say about the hotel, shower and breakfast included.
You can find better in La Linea, unless you have a dog that needs a cheap hotel...

“Good budget option”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 22 April 2009

La Linea is not, yet, the posh place in Andalucia- fairly run down due to its historic past. With the new domestic flights to GIB airport from Madrid, Barcelona and Bilbao starting this summer- more people will arrive to La Linea- and the area will blossom in a few years. if you want to explore some "old" Andalucia this is the place right now. The promenade, beach etc. is beeing upgraded, and soon the town itself will be. As an alternative to stay in GIB itself La linea is a good option. Easy to catch bus to many places from coachstation not far from bordercrossing.

Mediteraneo is a fine 3 star-ish spanish hotel. It is budget accomodation, nice rooms and nice bathrooms- cleaned everyday. good beds, small balconies (some with furniture)- 5 spanish tv channels- no minibar. rooms have wifi. Its basic but adequate.

Breakfast is fine- bread and toast, eggs, marmelade, cheese, cold cuts, juice, tea and coffee. You can order dinner and menu is in elevator. The cafeteria provides you with light lunch, drinks, and afternoon coffee/tea.

Its true- the area surrounding the hotel is not posh- but a 10 min. walk will take you to the city centre- and approx. 15 min. to GIB frontier. Taxi approx. 5 EUR.

For people who has never been to Spain- you can not expect everybody to speak English- learn a few words in Spanish and ask if they speak english- then suddenly they speak some english. And as Spanish people are a bit sensitive to the fact that they have been looked upon as 2 grade worldcitizens- you might want to be respectful and ask politely- and you will get the same back. Most Andalucians are kind people with warm hearts- and their service and standars maybe are not up to par, but respect will get you far...

“Avoid at all cost!”

I wouldn't stay here again even if it's free!

Our room stank of sewage! The reception staff was very abrupt. No smile, probably because the whole area is just depressing! It felt like we were somewhere in downtown Baghdad!

The sea view was good but being situated along a major road and the sea was actually a bit too much. Air con didn't work and when we switched it onw it emitted an awful stench! And I couldn't sleep all night because the room just stank of human [---] basically! There wasn't any other room, but it didn't look full. Breakfast was atrocious as the coffee came out from a machine which wasn't cleaned and caked in coffee powder! The only acceptable thing was the little cake that was in a pack, so, you can imagine how awful breakfast was!

I wouldn't recommend this hotel to my worst enemy. It should be demolished, and the hotel group should start from scratch!
