La Linea is not, yet, the posh place in Andalucia- fairly run down due to its historic past. With the new domestic flights to GIB airport from Madrid, Barcelona and Bilbao starting this summer- more people will arrive to La Linea- and the area will blossom in a few years. if you want to explore some "old" Andalucia this is the place right now. The promenade, beach etc. is beeing upgraded, and soon the town itself will be. As an alternative to stay in GIB itself La linea is a good option. Easy to catch bus to many places from coachstation not far from bordercrossing.
Mediteraneo is a fine 3 star-ish spanish hotel. It is budget accomodation, nice rooms and nice bathrooms- cleaned everyday. good beds, small balconies (some with furniture)- 5 spanish tv channels- no minibar. rooms have wifi. Its basic but adequate.
Breakfast is fine- bread and toast, eggs, marmelade, cheese, cold cuts, juice, tea and coffee. You can order dinner and menu is in elevator. The cafeteria provides you with light lunch, drinks, and afternoon coffee/tea.
Its true- the area surrounding the hotel is not posh- but a 10 min. walk will take you to the city centre- and approx. 15 min. to GIB frontier. Taxi approx. 5 EUR.
For people who has never been to Spain- you can not expect everybody to speak English- learn a few words in Spanish and ask if they speak english- then suddenly they speak some english. And as Spanish people are a bit sensitive to the fact that they have been looked upon as 2 grade worldcitizens- you might want to be respectful and ask politely- and you will get the same back. Most Andalucians are kind people with warm hearts- and their service and standars maybe are not up to par, but respect will get you far...
