“What a waste of excellent staff”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 12 February 2012

Travelled here with my wife again on a Groupon deal.
Room 12 allocated next to the exit door leading to the Leisure Centre. The room was small with poor lighting and even with 3 heaters cold.
The towels as we later found out were borrowed from the leisure centre due to a delivery issue.
The bathroom needed a major overhaul.
Bar food was appalling and the taster menu was literally a taste, very small portions.
Breakfast was a farce as after one hour we left with my wife not having had hers due to the first choice of scrambled eggs being cold and poorly prepared sent back and the second choice of poached eggs and bacon not appearing after 15 mins.
Needless to say we complained and my wife spoke to two managers who have noted our concerns. They were very polite and promised to take on board our comments.A reduction of £20 off the bill was agreed.
The concept of log cabins is great as long as there is sufficient heating throughout to keep everybody happy, this was not the case.
The plus point are the staff none of whom we can complain about and that is why we have given it 2 points.

“Can't wait to return”

My partner and I recently stayed at the Chevin for a one night break.
On entering reception we were greeted by a roaring log fire, very welcoming considering it was snowing outside.
We were staying in one of the cabins in the grounds. Clean , smart and very comfortable.
The meal in the restaurant was fantastic.
All the staff were really friendly and polite.
The only problem we had was that our stay wasn't long enough!!

“Worst hotel I have ever stayed in”

Couldn't have been worse. The rooms were tired and tatty and bathrooms not fit for purpose with a shower curtain that I wouldn't even clean the floor with. The seven course taster menu included in the groupon deal was a joke and even the staff looked embarrassed to be bringing it out. The lounge was freezing despite the log fires. The concept of a log cabin woodland retreat would have been good in 1983 when it opened however it needs a very large overhall to bring it back up to standard. The only positive thing is that the staff were very friendly and professional. Don't go there if you want a relaxing weekend away. We couldn't wait to leave.

Dear Guest,

Many thanks for your feedback and I'm sure you can appreciate that I was very shocked to read your feedback. The hotel is the largest wooden structure in the UK and all our websites clearly indicate this. Our bedrooms have been refurbished in 2010 and mainy of our guests really love the wooden - Scandinavian style that runs through the hotel. I thought it was odd that this came as a surprise to you.

In regards to our menu this has proven very popular with our guests and we are in the process of introducing the summer menus shortly, again based on 6 courses.

Thank you for the kid comments regarding the staff and will pass these on to them.

With thanks,

Jurgen Kruijt

“Great find!”

We stayed here on a £69 Groupon deal. What a bargain. We would never have known this hotel existed if it wasn't for Goupon and we will return (if the price is right!). We upgraded to an executive double for a small fee, which was located in an outside wooden lodge, which was a real treat, it was warm and cosy, and very tastefully decorated. We made full use of the leisure facilities which included sauna, steam room, inside and outside jacuzzi and a good size pool, (also a gym available which looked well equiped) the only grumble was that they could do with a good clean. There is a tennis court and a well stocked lake if you are into fishing (equipment provided). The bar areas and restaurant were fab, it was like being in the Swiss Alps in Otley. We had a 6 course tasting menu which was excellent and our deal included a bottle of wine which was an added bonus. The staff were very proffessional and really made the trip. Breakfast was superb, with an extensive menu to choose from. All in all a great experience and we would deffinitely recommend.

“Fabolous 40th Birthday for my sister”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 6 February 2012

I booked this hotel for my partner and I as we got an offer on Groupon, however we decided to book for my sister's 40th present also, I emailed the hotel general and I got a great deal her and her parter... we also paid extra and got ourselves upgraded to the bishopdale log cabin suite, which was fantastic.... The hotel managed to get my sister in a log cabin near by as requested.... The weekend we went it had snowed heavy and it added to the experience... ym sister loved evey part of it... We booked a table for the evening which was the 6 course menu... which to be honest I was a bit dubious about as I am a fussy eater but it was lovely... I had managed to get a cake in without my sister seeing and the staff were wondeful, they broght it out after tea/coffee dimmed the lights and sang happy birthay - the waiting staff were excellent, very professional.....

the log cabins were lovely and warm, you can hear people talking next door a little, but this dodn't bother us... we took goodies with us, had a drik in the cain, then went and sat in the bar in the afternoon then had our meal.... didn't get chance to use the spa facilities as we didn't get there till late afternoon but will definately recommend...

The lady on reception too was very nice, very good at her job, apologies I never got her name...

Would definitley recommend this hotel... the only thing I would recommend woud be beans at breakfast instead of tomatoes... but that was just a personal choice of us 4... the breakfas was fantastic and cooked very well

A big Thank You to all the staff at Chevin

Anne-Marie x

Room Tip: The Bishopdale Suite... which is a log canin, worth upgrading as you get a seating area also xx
