“Shattered Expectations”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 2 February 2012

I selected this place to stay after reading all the reviews on trip advisor but we were majorly disappointed after my stay here.
First three days we stayed at Demazong (Club Mahindra) which was indeed a good experience. After two days of stay at Lachung we checked-in here and there in the issue started rather the list of issues started.
1) The room which I had requested for wasn't allocated; I had requested a top-level room almost a month and a half earlier and which was confirmed. And when asked why it wasn't allocated they didn't have a reason for it. After spending time reading through reviews and comments of fellow travellers you do you planning and when you don't get what you'd ordered it is disappointment to the core.
2) Secondly, I accepted the room given to us without being haughty but horror of horrors the water-heater (geyser) wasn't heating up as it should be. I thought it might take some time (the label mentions should take 15mins), after waiting for around 20-25mins we decided to go over to the restaurant for coffee as it wasn't heated till then, hoping that by that time we are back the water will be pretty hot. Mind you right now it is a pretty cold weather, so a warm water is of no use and it is akin to a cold water. After coming back after 45mins at the restaurant we checked but the water hasn't been heated up, i.e. around an hour and a half. I again went out to fetch the hotels boys and tell them the problem. The landlady came herself with the other people. She was pretty apologetic about it but also accused (politely though) that she will give me a top room as agreed upon, by that time one of the other staff started educating me about the way the heater works and all which made me loose my mind. We had to bath with almost cold water. After a tiring journey, and in such cold temperatures it was really horrifying. They finally did some repair and early next morning it was working but by then the damage had been done.
And if you are unlucky as we were there is one more thing which adds to the misery, you have to chase the staff by leaving your rooms because the rooms don't have a intercom, and that was the last straw. I almost cancelled my 3 day stay and booked Demazong again but later cancelled the decision and stayed put as we were two tired after the trip to move again...
3) Thirdly the room heater wasn't working, was coughing cold air. And I just fused couldn't took it any more. One more thing, in such a weather they are keeping the heater as optional, you need to pay for it (Rs. 100/day) that is preposterous and on top of it it is not working. After much arguiging the same was replaced the NEXT day and that was a decent one. Otherwise at Club Mahindra the heater was on when we entered the room and the room was perceptibly warm, that is called as thoughtfulness . Due to this cold welcome my wife caught cold and we had to cancel our next days plan.
4) Then, when you order veg-cheese sandwiches you will get (it is for Rs. 60) but if the same is a part of your package - meal/breakfast and you order it you wont get veg-cheese sandwiches, in spite of telling multiple times they will offer you only cheese-sandwiches. Is it some sort of a cost cutting method, if yes I feel sorry for myself selecting this hotel.
5) Finally the last day when we were leaving we had to lug our own luggage from the room to the cab at the main gate otherwise I would've had to go chasing the staff and then they would've come to fetch it. I saved this bother to me and to them as well.
6) Food is un-expectedly not so good. After trying all the stuff we stuck to dal-chawal and some vegetables which is really decent and palatable. It really doesn't make any big difference to a hungry man whether the food is planted in an organic manner at there own farm or it is bought from the market as far as the cooking is soul stirring. Which is not a case here, out of compulsion as this place is a little away from town we had to had the breakfast and dinner at the hotel and we used to be eager to be in the town (MG Rd.) for a good hot palatable chow.
7) Finally, I suppose they (owners) who originally ran a nursery which is very good even now and the place is pleasing to the eye they should enrol for a hospitality course with some Hotel Management institute which will help them no ends. I can say the people are are soft and warm but when all this messes are happening and they can't handle it effectively how can I rate them, excellent or very good??? As here they are not being rated for being a good human beings but for the way they are offering the service and which wasn't up to the mark. I for sure won't stay at this place again.
Hope they read this review and use it as an opportunity to improve upon.

Room Tip: No use, even if you book one chances are you would be given some other room.

“A wonderful retreat”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 31 January 2012

This is an excellent property which is managed by the owners them selves. The entire area is filled with orchids, vegetable plantation which are a treat for sore city eyes. The staff is very courteous and always helpful. There are a total of 18 rooms - which are quite big and all of them have a balcony with them.
The resort is 3 kms downhill from the MG marg - which is the only disadvantage. You need to take a hired cab to go to the town.
Rates are moderate - the hotel website provides relevant information.
Food is reasonably okay.

Room Tip: All the rooms are good.

“Perfect”

Excellent rooms right in middle of garden & orchard....wonderful family who owns the place...reasonable cost (3500 per night including 2 meals & room heater)....excellent service by local caretakers....food prepared from fresh vegetable plucked from the garden...menu selected by ur recommendation....helpful facilities like internet...what more can one ask for?
small downsides- a bit away from main market and taxi demand upto 200 for taking you there...really cold with hills & garden...most of the hotels of gangtok r really cheap with good room right in MG road for 1800-2000...
but these are small price to pay for living in the unblemished serenity of Hidden Forest....stay there if u can afford it and if u wish to go back with beautiful memories
