“Pondicherry heritage”

A nicely restored and maintained heritage property, well-located not far from the French quarter. The room was large and comfortable. Good value for money, with breakfast included. Food in the hotel restaurant was limited to Indian only, as against the extensive menu, as their chef had left. But the staff were helpful in providing and creating alternatives not on the menu. Car parking was also available right outside the hotel.

“Experience Heritage in Pondicherry”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 25 September 2011

First the basics, location of the property, Calve, is excellent, on the Mission St; hardly 500-600m walk from the Promenade (walk straight down the road on the left side on exiting the hotel). The building is pretty old, colonial period but you cannot make out, especially from the inside. I stayed in the Chettinad Room on first floor - actually all the 11 odd rooms are on the first & second floor. Modern facilities seemlessly blend with the architecture / existing structure. The rooms were clean on check-in and housekeeping staff are a courteous lot. Special thanks to the manager, for giving a personal touch to my stay by making some good suggestions about the local place.

There is a restaurant attached to this property, Salle Manger - since i travelled with a toddler, all my requests to make the food palatable by my kid was accepted and the staff were very friendly - they even suggested certain specialities, which were not on the menu.

Overall, i would rate it excellent in terms of the stay, behavior and caring attitude of the staff and ofcourse, the food (at the in-house restaurant).

“Centrally located, homely in feel, friendly staff”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 6 September 2011

1. Calve is a very centrally located hotel. Just off the main market street (Mission Street), many eating options within walking distance, the beach & the french town is a 10 mins walk away. The street where the hotel is located is very residential and peaceful.
2. The Hotel staff (especially the manager Mr. NandaGopal) is very helpful and welcoming. They were willing to provide us breakfast early in the morning at 6AM when we had to depart. They even gave us a juice carton for our journey without our asking for it.
2. The hotel being a heritage hotel created in a old tamil style home feels very homely.
3. All in all we are very satisfied with the hotel and plan to stay at this place on our next trip as well.

Room Tip: Ask for a room with a window, else it might feel claustrophobic.

“Best hotel I visited in India...”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 14 June 2011

Although the date is December 2010 the option to select December 2009 is unavailable, so please read this review my stay during New Year 2010 in India!
First of all, this hotel was quite tricky to find, jumping in a tut-tut from the local bus station the drivers a short while later did not "know" where the hotel was....pulling a fast one so to say. However this did not seem to bother me, after sitting in a crowded local bus for 5 hours, it was lovely to zigzag through the streets of Pondicherry. What a beautiful town, well worth a visit.
Anyway, back to the hotel review! This hotel was beautiful. Very grand and elegant feeling after the previous hotels I stayed in on this trip, and it was spotlessly clean.
The hotel staff could not be happier to assist us with everything, from carrying our bags to information on this beautiful hotel and local insider tips of where to go and what to see.
The room was on the top floor...or i should actually write the suite, for it was massive, beautifully wooded rooms, beautiful furniture and old telephone handset and receiver (for decoration purpose only) however it added to the character and charm of this place. With a fantastic bathroom, air-con bedroom and such a silent peaceful sleep.

The restaurant was in an open courtyard, which could be viewed directly below the corridor leading to the suite several floors below. Before discussing the restaurant, a little walk up the one flight of stairs remaining brings you onto the roof top, which has stunning views if you catch the sunset over the roofs of the buildings throughout this lovely town. And later, pop up there before going to bed, have a beer and look at the moon hovering above the skyline, watching the few people still busily walking about at that time of night.
The restaurant had an extensive menu, Indian and European. Only trying the Indian selection, this was fantastic. Absolutely delicious Indian cuisine sitting sheltered by the hotel under the stars...perfect! Befriending our waiter this young man became a joy to interact with the nights eating there. One night it was decided to order room service dinner from the restaurant. Fantastic service and the same delicious menu on offer.
Spending New Year here it was decided to upgrade the accommodation for this special event during my trip to India, and I could not have been in better accommodation than this hotel, simply amazing all round.
