“Very Nice Stay”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 28 January 2012

We stayed there January 6, 2012-January 9, 2012 soon after Cyclone Thane had hit. Our room was Chadranagore, which was set up for 5 of us (3 children and two adults). It was a Neemrana property and we have stayed at their other properties as well. It's the typical non-hotel hotel as they put it and was very reasonably priced. We got an additional discount for being a "Friends of Neemrana" member. Service was very friendly and excellent. Some seafood was not available in the restaurant due to the Cyclone. Free Breakfast nothing great but acceptable. Lunch and Dinner was chargeable and very nice and fairly reasonable. The room was very charming as was the city of Pondicherry. We were the only ones there with kids it seemed, and this place catered mainly to older expat adults. No pool or gym. Everything else close by either walking or rickshaw.

NeemranaHotels, Guest Relations Manager at Hotel de l'Orient, responded to this review
25 February 2012
Dear Guest,

Thank you very much for your review about Hotel de l’Orient.

We are pleased to learn that you enjoyed your stay in the Chandernagore Suite and have communicated your compliments to the hotel team.

As you are aware, since Neemrana opened its doors to guests, we have been working on a very different hospitality model which revives ruined or unused heritage architectural structures. There are constraints with respect to adding facilities like a pool and gym due to the original structure of the restored French mansion.

We thank you for your continued patronage and look forward to serving you again soon!

Warm regards,
Team Neemrana

“A GOOD EXPERIENCE”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 26 January 2012

the hotel has a old world charm, the rooms are airy and well appointed,
it is suggested that a autowash system be incorporated as integral to the w.c
the food at the restuarant serves a western client and has no variety. it should be multicusine with special emphasis on sea-food. it is slightly over priced.

the breakfast should give a different variety every day.
the staff were courteous but the waiters stand offish and indifferent.
a good experience over-all

“Colonial and Charming”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 17 January 2012

This is a lovely hotel located in the historic French quarter. The staff are friendly, but work incredibly long hours (the same staff worked all three meal services) which can explain mistakes or errors. During our 30 days in India we found this to be a common experience for most staff.

We ate at the hotel restaurant and the food was good, but those expecting Parisian cuisine will be disappointed. We enjoyed the courtyard dining experience for what it was -- and enjoyed ourselves thoroughly. The two singers on they bring in on the weekend are excellent.

“Poor standard and overpriced. Never again”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 11 January 2012

This hotel had great reviews here and in my guide book but when my mum and I went to stay for Christmas 2011 we were so disappointed we made plans to get a refund and leave almost immediately. The rooms we were given were in an annex a few doors down from the hotel. To be fair to them, we were told this in advance. However, what they did not tell us was that the rooms opened directly onto the street and one of them was at street level. There was no lobby with a porter or guard, nothing between us and a poorly lit street with lots of young men lounging about rather unpleasantly. Next, the food. While there was good French bread and some surprisingly good pate, that is where the good stopped. The breakfast coffee was so bad we couldn't drink it. At lunch and dinner we were repeatedly served cold or luke warm meals which not only were unpleasant but also were a health hazard in the South Indian climate. The staff were chronically disorganised, one of the waiters told us that many of them do not understand each other's languages (he was from the North and therefore didn't speak Tamil) which rather farcically meant that many orders were literally lost in translation. Some of the other staff, notably the receptionists were down right rude and unhelpful. We were expecting crisp French colonial grandeur. What we got was a shambolic, uncomfortable and unsafe farce. Never again

“The best hotel in Pondicherry, charming house, excellent service”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 6 January 2012

We stayed 4 nights at the Hotel de l'Orient for Christmas 2011, this is a beautiful charming hotel, old 18th century house very well renovated, very well located in the "white" part of the town, rooms are all different, with old antique furniture and large bathroom, overlooking the patio. Food is excellent and service very good. We were there on Dec 30th when the cyclone Thane happened, and i must say i was impressed with professionalism of the manager and his staff. despite half of the kistchen destroyed and difficulties to find products in the following days, they managed to prepare a breakfast, a lunch and maintained the new year eve diner with a nice buffet. Congratulations to the team at hotel de l' Orient.
A very nice address in Pondicherry..

Room Tip: we had Bassalore on first floor, nice large room
