“Lovely hotel, unfriendly staff...”

...and if you travel in September, don't be surprise if you are the ONLY English there! We booked this hotel ourselves and the flights seperately. Never again, because for the entire week we never came across one English person. We will definitely book a package next time. (Thomas Cook use this hotel) Although we didn't go to Menorca to be with English people, we missed the interaction. The hotel was virtually filled with Spanish people on holiday with the exception of a handful of German holidaymakers. Not that this was a problem, but no-one would smile at us for some reason. Including the staff. It was all a bit weird. So we felt uncomfortable around the hotel during the day (and night!) and ventured out to the beautiful rocky coves, which, by the way, were extremely quiet and perfect for private sunbathing. Sa Caleta itself is a very small and picturesque resort, although almost deserted in September. So we caught the bus into Cuitadella on numerous occasions. The buses are every 10 mins or so, the drivers speak good English, and it only costs about £1.20 each way. Ciutadella is a beautiful old city with a stunning harbour and I comfortably travelled there on my own to shop whilst my husband stayed and sunbathed. 15 mins in the other direction will take you to Cala'n Bosch, which in contrast was over-run with the British but nice to have some conversation and a pub quiz at the Brittania pub. For meals, try Sa Nacra just beside the hotel. You can sit on the water's edge and watch the sun go down and the food is tasty and reasonably priced. The room itself was adequate and we asked for a quiet situation which we got. One down side, although the towels were changed every day, they were old and occasionally holey and one time there was something absolutely DISGUSTING on it which should certainly not have been on a towel, obviously their soap powder is not up to much! Staff 'surly and rude'? Yes! My experiment on our last day to smile at each and every guest accompanied by a cheery "Hola!" could not tempt even one reply. Sigh, never mind, we got chit-chat at the airport bar on the way home. Would we return to Sa Caleta? Yes! Beautiful interesting coastline. Temperatures were perfect in September. But sadly not to the Prinsotel. (it would probably fine if booked through a tour operator or in peak season) It's only saving grace was the buffet breakfast and the filter coffee. Fill your boots but don't expect to feel welcome.

“Lovely hotel. Would recommend.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 7 September 2010

The Prinsotel La Caleta is in a great location adjacent to Cala Santandria's lovely small cove and beach.
The first impression of the hotel is very pleasing as the gardens are very well maintained and pleasing on the eye, as is the reception area.

The reception staff were very helpful and friendly.

We stayed on a self catering basis in the apartment area of the grounds.

I was initially a little disappointed with our room as it was just a standard self catering apartment typical of any package tour apartment and whilst I stand by this, the room did grow on me as our week wore on. There was nothing wrong with it is was just a little worn looking and basic and perhaps I was expecting a bit more.
It was however in a great location on the ground floor overlooking the pool (the second pool on the complex). Each ground floor apartment has a kind of hedge in front of the patio area which is nice and you feel as if you have a small garden.
The apartments pool was a really nice pool. It was never too busy and there were plenty of sun beds available. There was a life guard on duty from about 11am until 7pm which is a nice touch but probably unnecessary as any children in the pool were always well monitored by their parents. I suspect the life guard has never been involved in a rescue!

There were plenty of activities to get involved in if you wanted to.
These usually took place or were organised around the main pool but there was a timetable board in the reception area that displayed the schedule.
Our son played water polo one day and really enjoyed it. There was also a bouncy castle although we never saw this inflated, probably due to us being somewhere or doing something else.

The pool side cafe area is very nice and reasonably priced but without doubt the highlight is the evening buffet dinner.

For €13 for adults and €6.50 for children you had access to a great range of lovely food. We ate at about 7.30pm. At this time the restaurant was very quiet (mainly because the Spanish guests tend to eat later) and we were lucky enough to eat outside every time which was fantastic (as long as you weren't within pollution range of a smoker - (no fault of the hotel)).

We intended to eat out most nights as this is a pleasurable part of a holiday that we enjoy, however the food, choice of food and cost of eating out could not compare or compete with the buffet at the Prinsotel La Caleta so we mainly ate their.

After dinner at the hotel we would watch the evening entertainment which was always enjoyable.

Added to all this the hotel location is great (Cala Santandria is literally a 1 minute walk away) and Cuitadella is a 20-30 minute walk away.

The hotel also has free wi-fi internet which was great for us with a laptop. Compare this to a 5 star hotel we recently stayed at where the cost for wi-fi was very prohibitive.

I wouldn't put anyone off staying at the Prinsotel La Caleta. We had a lovely time there.

“Great hotel and facilities, one of our best holidays.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 29 August 2010

Just got back from staying at the Prinsotel La Caleta and had a fab time. Went with hubbie and two kids (13 and 11). Hotel is great - very clean (and I'm very fussy). We had a one bed apartment, kids slept on the setees which were better than we've previously had, my son's about 5'6 and he was fine on it. Crisp, clean white sheets on all beds, which were changed half-way through the week. Our bedroom was spacious - double wardbrobe, dressing table, bedside cabinets , sliding doors to shut youself off from the living area if you wanted to. Dining table and four chairs, well equipped kitchen with two hobs, microwave and fridge. Very clean and reasonable sized bathroom and even a half-decent shower - a miracle when staying away! Good sized balcony with table and two chairs and a dryer (hotel ask that towels aren't hung over the balcony - quite like that!). Apartment cleaned every day. Full marks for the accommodation.

The main hotel has a large reception area - plenty of white setees and lovely and cool. The apartments are split into blocks around two pools - both were great, loads of sunbeds (we never had a problem getting one - and you're asked not to 'reserve' them until 9am anyway - not that people seemed to). Instead of parasols the hotel has like a thatched awning all the way around both pools - which was excellent and provided great shade when needed - so no fights for sunbeds or parasols!

We went self-catering and ate in the hotel three times in the evening which was good value for money - 39 euros for all of us (without drinks). There was a large buffet each time with loads of salads, meats, cheeses, dips etc for starters then about five main dishes such as meat, fish etc (and chips!) and a griddle each evening with kebabs, veal steak, prawns etc (and pizza!) and either a paella or rice dish as well. Loads of choice for dessert too, the kids really enjoyed eating there. We ate at a few other restaurants - The Ocean I think it was on the main strip which was ok -looks like they had a couple of bouncy castles each night there for younger children; Sa Nacre which is just behind the hotel overlooking the sea and The Bistro which is just set back from the beach - would recommend The Bistro - had a lovely meal there.

The hotel itself is about two minutes to the beach which has one small cove then another larger one. Sunbeds and parasols are available to hire but aren't cheap - 30 euros for four for a day . There are a couple of beach cafes, showers and toilets. It is only a small beach and there were only two peddlos to hire but lots of people were snorkelling. Occasionally you got a wift of seeweed but it wasn't too bad. Lovely sunsets.

There's a well stocked supermarket literally across the road open from 8am to 10pm. The Hotel has a poolside cafe open, it looked like, all day. There's a bus stop five minutes walk away and a few restaurants/bars on the same road but not much else, it is a fairly small and quiet resort.

Entertainment at the hotel was a bit limited - early evening disco for young children (not every night) and there tended to be something on about 10.30 each evening, a singer outside one night and a couple of shows inside - we didn't really join in with this though. It was finished by 11.30 and the bar appeared to shut at midnight each night.

If all you want is good accommodation and food, a small beach and a few bars and restaurants I'd definately recommend this hotel but if it's a busy nightlife with lots to do and see I wouldn't bother. I think if our children had been even a year older they might have been a bit bored but, as it was, we really had a great, relaxing time!

“Great would definately go back”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 22 June 2010

Just got back and agree with many of the reviews. We booked and travelled with Thomas Cook, although we did not take up the transfers from the airport and chose to hire a car instead. We would thoroghly recommend hiring a car as the resort is very quiet and the island is so beautiful that it is a shame if you don't explore it. We booked the car through Solmar and would recommend them, although car hire is very expensive in Menorca.

The hotel itself is very pleasant with very few English staying there, mainly Spanish and German holiday makers. We stayed in one of the self catering apartments and it was very clean, in fact all of the grounds and communal areas were all very clean. The apartment itself was well equipped, but take a small amount of washing up liquid and a dish cloth.

There are 2 swimming pools, one which is mainly for the hotel guests which is quite noisy with many activities taking place around it like salsa dancing/aquagym/archery/rifle shooting or the quieter pool near the apartments. Both had a childrens area. There was never a problem getting a sunbed whatever time of the day it was.

We ate in the hotel one evening (13 euros per person) and although there was huge selection of food and it was very nice it was very busy in the restaurnat and we did feel quite rushed.

The best place that we found to eat was Cafe Del Sol which was right on the beach, they had a different set menu every day and cost 12.50euro pp. Very good quality food and great value. Also had fantastic sunsets from there.

If you get a car Cal en Bosch was good to go out to in the evening, there are loads of restaurants around a pretty marina.

Cuitedella is the old capital city and is really pretty. Its about 3kms away and you can walk it in about 30 minutes.

We had a lovely time and will return there perhaps in a few years time. I hope the island doesn't get to built up, its perfect the way it is.

“This should be a four star resort”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 1 June 2010

This hotel and its setting is absolutely beautiful! Gorgeous setting, apartments so clean and comfortable, we travelled at the start of the season so it was quiet, but entertainment crew still did their best, would recommend bar san nacra across the road. Buffet in hotel was excellent value, 13 euro, all you can eat-3 courses!! Bus stop just up the road from hotel, excellent base to rent a car from and explore the island!
Would recommend this place to anyone - had such a nice time there :)
