“Peaceful little place!”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 28 May 2007

We booked this online with xl.com and it was quite a bargain for a family of four for one week. When we arrived the apartments they were nice and clean and had all the usual facilities. Staff very pleasant and pool area lovely and peaceful during the day - entertainment staff were just lovely - they provided just enough to keep our kids entertained but they weren't in your face or loud and noisy like the reps over the road at the thomson hotel! With direct access to the beach it was perfect for a week of relaxation. Now the bad news - we were self catering by choice, expecting to finish off our day with a nice meal only to find the restaurants were very overpriced for the extremely dodgy food they dished up - it appeared that all menus were the same and things started bad at El Pins -a restaurant on the beach - when we ordered chicken kebabs and were served a turkey twizzler on a stick! I sent mine back as it was pink inside and they just put the whole meal under the grill - so chips were well done too!! Just revolting and if that wasn't bad enough - my little boys burger was purple! There was a chinese over the road which was ok and the hotel itself had its own pizza restaurant - although the pizza was cooked on site the pizza base came out of a pack in the freezer - not quite the italian theme you expect. So all in all lovely place, nice appts but dreadful food - sorry Santo Thomas but you need some serious competition out there - and anyone starting up a good restaurant could make a fortune.

“Wonderful staff”

I read reviews of this property before going on holiday & was a bit dubious, but both my husband & myself couldn't find a lot wrong. The whole complex of the apartments was beautifully clean every day, the staff were so helpful & courteous, clean sheets & towels whenever, and any problem was dealt with immediately, the food, especially the breakfast, was good in the restaurant. Our apartment overlooked the garden but was wonderfully quiet, just what we needed. There was no evening entertainment as listed but we didn't want to do that anyway. We would especially like to single out the receptionist Theresa, who almost bent over backwards to help. The only thing we found fault with was the Pizza restaurant,we only went there once & didn't think much of the pizzas at all. Very skimpy on the toppings and the dough was so hard. Santo Tomas is a lovely resort and we would go back to the Lord Nelson apartments again.

“great beach, find another hotel.”

we booked thie appartments 6 months before the holiday but on arrival were tol the place was full so were given a grotty room overlooking the supermarket and above a generator! The balcony was about 3ft by 3ft. Obviously we asked for a new room but were refused. On the fourth timeof our asking, with me having to almost beg, we were told that surpise, surprise, there was a cancellation, and we were given a better room overlooking the sea. There was no air conditioning, so we had to hire a fan for about 15E, and spent a small fortune on mosquito reppellants, ( none of which worked!). Out kids were bitten to pieces. The reception staff were surly, unhelpful and gave the impression they hated Brits, Germans, Itallians.....Santa Tomas itself is ok for families, although very pricey. Las Dunas is not bad for entertainment, very friendly there, and the buffet further up the road (can't remember the name of the hotel, but there's a big advert outside)is excellent. The beach is gorgeous and the sea is warm and clear. We would return to Menorca but definitely NOT to this hotel.

“Dont go on the Fiesta!!!”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 21 August 2006

This was the first time my husband and I had visited Menorca. After reading some of the other reviews, I was unsure on what we would find. Our weeks stay didn't get off to a good start, as when we arrived at the apartments we were told there wasn't a room for us and the hotel had overbooked. According to our rep, all the hotels do the same i.e. over book, just in case people cancel! This was the last thing we needed at 1.00am in the morning! The receptionist directed us to the 4* Santo Tomas hotel were we stayed for 2 nights. This hotel was fantastic and if we could we would have stopped there for the week. We also received £40 per person for our inconvenience.

On our arrival back at the Lord Nelson apartments, we were pleasantly surprised. The apartment was clean and the complex was okay. The apartments does cater for families, so if you are expecting a quiet time relaxing round the pool then this is not going to happen. The entertainment site is also central to the complex. Entertainment at night starts at 8.30 and ends at 12.00. If like us, you end up with an apartment overlooking the entertainment, then you will not get an early night due to the loudness of the music. If you can, try and get a room at the far side of the apartment block. We didnt bother moving, but it you have a family then you will need to.

The apartment complex has one pizza restaurant, a bar and a dining room. We ate in the pizza restaurant once and also had a couple of drinks in the bar before we went out for an evening meal. We ate breakfast in the dining room once (you have to pay 8 euros each if you are self catering). The food was okay. We had all our breakfasts at the English bar, which is located across the road from hotel. We also ate their some evenings. The resort has limited restaurants (about 3) but the food is good.

The beach is directly behind the apartments and is lovely. Not to busy either. The sunbeds are expensive (20 euros) for 2, but you do get them for the whole day.

We went on a couple of trips, a Fiesta and a trip to the capital Mahon. The Fiesta was one of our worst nights ever. There were thousands of people there, all crammed in to a little village. There was nowhere to get a drink or sit down and a long waiti for the float procession to start. We both felt that we should have been given more information on what the trip was about including details of times etc. We arrived there at 8.15pm and nothing started until 10.00pm. The trip to Mahon was better and if you want to see what Menorca is about then this trip is recommended.

Overall we had a good relaxing time (apart from the Fiesta) but the resort wasn't for us. Ideal for families.
