Let me first say that we were taken to this hotel as part of the Top Deck Greek Island Hopper - Euro Summer 2011. I feel compelled to express my extreme dissatisfaction with accommodation, personnel and safety.
I am not one to complain about hotels unless confronted with something truly horrendous.
Firstly, on arrival we were given our room key by tour guide Stella Smith (more on her later). Upon seeking our room for 30 minutes, we were told that our room was not in the main vicinity with our fellow tour members. Instead, we were lead out the front reception and around to an unsavoury dirt alley where our room was flanked by the hotel's garbage receptacles and laundry. Moreover, two shady men sat outside the door selling what seemed to be counterfeit merchandise. "You buy it!" they shouted aggressively. This was enough to give myself and my travelling companion pause, and yet we had not entered the room.
Upon entry, we were greeted by a room that would be best described as a cubby house designed for the likes of Hansel and Gretel as opposed to two large, burly twenty-somethings. We could barely move around without making phyical contact (not hyperbole). My companion then attempted to lie on the child size bed. Needless to say, at 6"4, his legs dangled from the bottom. It must be noted that fellow tour members observed the room and also urged us to complain. So disgusted with our accommodation, they offered to allow us to share with them since four to a standard room would still be more spacious than what we encountered. My travelling companion thrust his backpack in disgust and we made our way to front reception. My friend and I wanted to spend the tour together as mates, but not this close together! After the five minute walk back, dodging the shady vendors and over strewn garbage and assorted filth (of the human variety), we were finally greeted by the surly and obstreperous Stavroulos who was the front counter receptionist.
She listened to complaints, her face hardened and disinterested, refusing to accommodate our request for a better room. Her attitude was simply 'too bad, too sad'. It was not until after we forced our tour coordinator to act on our behalf that our rooms were changed.
Hence another chapter of misfortune begins. Firstly, the room was literally located a full kilometre away from the main complex and our fellow tour mates (8 minute walk uphill). This made getting breakfast a trial indeed!
Upon initial inspection, the room seemed pleasant and very spacious, but like dating, you only truly see the truth on a second date. Relieved at finally being able to move without our shoulders brushing we decided to look around. We first discovered that there was no phone in our room despite being told that every room would have one! This was perturbing to say the least, but we simply shrugged and decided to enjoy our new found space.
However, showering proved to be unhygienic and unpleasant. A blocked drain meant that the second person to shower would have to do so, shin deep, in a tepid pool of grey filth. Imagine being the last child to bathe in a poverty stricken Victorian home , more akin to a Dickensian tale than luxurious four star accommodation.
We also looked outside and noticed we were in rural Greece as sheep and mountain goats frolicked in a nearby pasture. This was odd, but not unpleasant, unlike the shower. We came for an island getaway, not to spend our time as Spartan helots herding the goats.
Our perils were further compounded when the door's malfunctioning lock (deliberately perhaps?) lead to my friends money clip being stolen from within a draw. Later the money clip was discovered, sans money and cards ( we suspect an inside job, however, were unable to gather enough evidence considering we were on vacation in a foreign land).
This event brought us back into the cold and condescending presence of receptionist Stavroulos. My friend asked to use the phone in reception to make necessary calls and arrangements (cancel cards, contact tour coordinator), even offering to pay for the calls. Instead, Stavroulos insisted he use the public phone located outside, in the street. Her rudeness did not stop there as she kept urging us toward the exit and said the hotel could not put itself on hold for two guests. We left her with a few choice words in our native English.
Must I be forced to mention the substandard breakfast buffet??? I don't think cereal, boiled eggs and a grey gruel with chopped peppers qualifies as a buffet, but I could be mistaken!!!!
Otherwise a pleasant stay....
Travellers Beware!!!
