I have mixed feelings about this hotel, where my husband and I stayed on our honeymoon last year.
On arrival at the airport we were awaited by a driver who took us straight to the hotel, only a 10 minute journey at most, in a basic but comfortable and air conditioned minibus. We were greeted on arrival with cold towels and a non alcoholic cocktail which was lovely. Check in was swift and we were accompanied to our room by a porter. The view was great, we had the largest balcony of the rooms alongside us and although the room wasn't huge, it wasn't tiny either. There was a slight whiff of drains by the door to the room but you only noticed that as you entered or left the room! There was a constant daily supply of lovely toiletries and towels and free towels for use by the pool and beach also. We needn't have packed our beach towels at all. Also there was a small bottle of very sweet wine and some nibbles free of charge on our arrival which we enjoyed on our balcony.
On the downside, we did feel a bit like naughty school children a lot of the time. There are lots of rules, like don't bring your own food and drinks into the hotel (ridiculous given it was about £5 for a bottle of water from the hotel) and you can't leave your sunlounger unattended for more than like a minute. Of course we still brought things into our room, just crisps, nuts and the odd beer, but felt like a criminal in doing so. But we couldn't have afforded to buy them there. The same applied around the pool, I never saw anyone with a bottle of water that they hadn't bought at the hotel so we daren't bring our own from the shop in case the woman patrolling the pool area told us off. Which she did with lots of people. We got told off for having left our towels on a sunbed whilst we went out for lunch, which took less than 45 mins and there were plenty of sunbeds available as it wasn't peak season. Again, on the other hand she would bring free fresh fruit (presumably left from breakfast), the occasional ice tea and clean your sunnies for you so you kind of had to appreciate her being there.
Everything is expensive in Greece at the moment but at the Ambassador that is the case even more so. We bought 2 simple chocolate milkshakes and they cost 20 Euros! We didn't realise this until the day after when we signed for 2 more and then discovered we'd spent £40 on milkshake.
Also, when asking reception to order a taxi for mykonos town, another couple suggested we share a taxi as they were heading there as well and we could split the cost. Great idea....but the hotel said no. Presumably they have some sort of deal with the taxi company. Poor customer service and exploitation if you ask me.
The gift shop was never open and neither was the bar by reception (I say it was off peak but it was only mid September and the hotel was still busy), also we had to walk a long way from one lift to another in a different building to get up to our room. Ok for us but not if you have poor mobility.
Wouldn't recommend it or stay there again. I certainly wouldn't stay in Platys Gialos either, the restaurants were all average at best, the beach smelly and packed with end to end expensive sunloungers, swarms of Americans in matching hats from the cruise ships and people pushing you to eat in their restaurants or buy cds/clothes etc all the time. It is not a relaxing or romantic place. We spent most of our time in Mykonos town meandering the lovely cobbled streets, eating traditional greek cuisine. Mykonos town is beautiful so don't be put off Mykonos, just avoid Platys Gialos and the Mykonian Ambassador!
