“Great Hotel. Fantastic Location”
We returned from a great week at the Golden Sun on 15th September. Please ignore any bad comments/reviews you may have read about this hotel, those comments sound like they have been made by someone who is expecting 5star from a 3star hotel. I have rated this hotel based on 3star expectations.....The hotel is set in lovely well kept gardens that are watered and tended every day. The pool area is well laid out, spacious and beautifully clean, with lots of sun loungers and a shaded seating area next to the pool bar. The pool is lovely and deep and the water crystal clear. (pool open until 7pm after which it is cleaned and prepared for the following day). The public areas, bar, reception, lounge and outdoor terrace are clean and welcoming with plenty of seating areas to relax with a drink or two. The staff are brilliant, helpful, polite and very hard working. Mikka on reception is great, we asked her one evening at 9.30pm who she would recommend we go to in town to hire a car? Within 5 minutes she had made a phone call, booked a car and arranged for it to be delivered to the hotel at 9am the next morning. Thank you Mikka, you saved us a morning of walking around the local car hire shops (there are 4 or 5 in town) more time for us to enjoy our holiday! The hotel is very close to the beach, just a couple if minutes walk. The beach is protected because of the turtle nests so closes at 7.30pm to allow the hatching turtle’s free undisturbed access to the sea. The Kalamaki Beach Bar is great for lunch and drinks if you are spending the day at the beach. Back to the hotel... The rooms are basic, but clean and comfortable with hairdryer and TV (mostly Greek). The aircon was a godsend especially at night, thought we would have to pay extra in September but it was Free!. You will need to take some cheap plastic plugs with you (for bath & sink) we took some thanks to the other reviews and enjoyed many long soaks in the bath after a hard day in the sun!. We had a room at the rear of the hotel looking over the gardens facing towards the sea and mountains. The balcony was west facing so had the sun all evening until is set (lovely for a relax with a glass of wine) Also FANTASTIC views of the planes arriving and leaving. They were fascinating to watch and got some great pics too! Only a couple of mornings had early flights (5.30am) so were woken a couple of times, but thought hey it's just some more lucky people arriving in Zante!! You can get some great shots of the planes over the beach too. The food in the hotel is basic, but tasty usually something there for everyones taste (pasta, rice, chips, meat, veg, fruit, cheese, ham, lovely salads) . If you are looking for something more up-market head up to the Kalamaki strip (10 min walk) - Plenty of choice there. The Island itself is not vast, you can see it all in 3/4 days with a car. Driving there is so easy, just take your time, ignore the Greeks, the mad people on quad bikes, the pot holes, and the rubble roads! Our Hire car was a sight when we had finished with it - thick with rubble dust!! We didn’t take any organised trips, we drove to all the attractions, got a boat at the blues caves for 7 Euros each! Anyway i could keep writing loads more....... so stop reading and get your holiday to the Golden Sun, Zante booked. You will be pleasantly surprised when you get there!
