“Aeroplane noise is deafening at 4am!”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 30 November 2011

So I guess you could say- what do you expect from a package holiday?

Friendly staff- Golden Sun ticks all boxes here.

Clean hotel- again, Golden Sun comes up trumps for this.

Nice room with balcony- the room was OK considering the price and yes, there was a balcony.

So what's the big deal??

The big deal is the aeroplanes. Thomas Cook correctly point out that any aeroplane noise stops after 10pm in the evening. Correct. But what they epically fail to mention is that the noise BEGINS AGAIN AT 4AM so you wake up thinking the world is literally about to end.... then you run to the window, look outside, and there's 100 passengers on a charter flight from Birmingham looking at you in your nightie.

If you can sleep through an earthquake/tsunami/major hurricane, you'll love this place.

“Basic hotel in good location”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 13 October 2011

The hotel has a nice pool, is very close to the beach and conveniently has a taxi rank right outside (only 8 euros to get into Laganas).

The breakfast was edible at best and we ate out every night as we could not face the food they were serving in the evening.

We were expecting the room to be basic, but it was less than basic - there was no plug cover for the bath or sink so you couldn’t have a bath even if you wanted to, there was no shower curtain so the bathroom got flooded every day, there was no shower fitting for the wall and we only had one pillow each. I’m also not convinced that our room was cleaned during the week we were there - our beds were made and towels replaced, but I don’t think any cleaning was done, which it really should have been given the bathroom was flooded everyday!

We spent very little time in the hotel so can’t comment on the rest of the facilities, but the receptionist who checked us in was very rude. The rest of the staff seemed friendly.

Overall, Kalamaki is a nice place to stay, but there are probably many far better hotels (and probably also some far worse!) to stay in than the Golden Sun for about the same cost.

“Excellent holiday, very pleased we decided to visit Zante.”

Me and my partner have just returned from 14 nights staying at the Golden Sun Hotel and what a fantastic time we had. We were very happy with our room, had everything you needed whilst on holiday, including 2 hairdryers so no need to bring your own just in case like I did. We had a lovely sea view room, rooms were cleaned everyday....you can't fault it. The airport is very close to the hotel, so on our first day it was a surprise to see the aeroplanes so close but it was never at any point a problem and I lost count of how many videos' we took of the planes coming in to land as it was compelling to watch. Food in the hotel was beautiful, especially the Salad bar, all fresh and selection of food changed regularly, breakfast also wonderful. The staff in the hotel just made our holiday fantastic, they really work hard and are more than happy to help you with anything. I read a previous review and someone had stated that the staff were rude and abusive however from my experience Its beyond my belief how that ever occurred, they were all fantastic, waitering, bar and reception staff. Mikka and Ria on reception are again fantastic, will help you with anything and are lovely, lovely people, very sad to say goodbye to them actually which from my experience doesn't happen a lot on holiday. Pool and snack bar at hotel also very good, we used these facilities a lot during our holiday. The hotel is in an excellent location, literally 2 minute walk to the beach. The beach was lovely and lots of space which was great as I hate being sat right next to people on a crowded beach. You cannot access the beaches on the Laganas bay from 7pm due to the protection of the turtles. The town of Kalamaki was nice and had everything you need ie restaurants, tourist shops, pharmacy ect and a short distance from the hotel. We ate out a few times to try the local food, we would definitely recommend the Olive Tree and Ambrosia, the food was beautiful and they make you feel so welcome. There were so many other restaurants that we wanted to try however we were half board at the hotel so didn't get the chance to eat out much. Also would recommend the Drunk Corner bar and the Shamrock Irish bar, again so welcomed there and great places to chill out and have a drink. Excursion wise, we booked the water park trip via our rep which was great fun. We booked our further 2 excursions via an independent company 'Mythos Travel' which is in the Kalamaki town, we found the trips to be of much greater value. The shipwreck trip that we booked was cancelled twice and the travel agent even came to our hotel late at night to tell us it had been cancelled. It might not sound a big thing to others but we discovered that trips others had booked via other places had been cancelled and the people weren't even told and left standing at their pick up point for hours so worth bearing in mind and we were lucky we had a good travel agent. Shipwreck trip was great, worth visiting as you get some great photo's. We also did the turtle trip on a brand new,hi spec boat which was fantastic and we were lucky enough to see the turtles. We hired a pedal out a few days later and did our own turtle spotting trip which was great and my partner got to swim with one however I wouldn't recommend people to do this if they aren't strong swimmers as we were quite far out and when the other tourist turtle spotting boats came along they tried their damn hardest to stop us from seeing the turtle as in their eye's we hadn't paid for it! I could go on and on but I think you get the picture that we had a wonderful holiday...all in all a fantastic stay and would certainly return to the Island and hotel.

Room Tip: We requested a sea view room and it was a lovely view of 'Turtle Island' where we were to.

“Great Hotel. Fantastic Location”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 23 September 2011

We returned from a great week at the Golden Sun on 15th September. Please ignore any bad comments/reviews you may have read about this hotel, those comments sound like they have been made by someone who is expecting 5star from a 3star hotel. I have rated this hotel based on 3star expectations.....The hotel is set in lovely well kept gardens that are watered and tended every day. The pool area is well laid out, spacious and beautifully clean, with lots of sun loungers and a shaded seating area next to the pool bar. The pool is lovely and deep and the water crystal clear. (pool open until 7pm after which it is cleaned and prepared for the following day). The public areas, bar, reception, lounge and outdoor terrace are clean and welcoming with plenty of seating areas to relax with a drink or two. The staff are brilliant, helpful, polite and very hard working. Mikka on reception is great, we asked her one evening at 9.30pm who she would recommend we go to in town to hire a car? Within 5 minutes she had made a phone call, booked a car and arranged for it to be delivered to the hotel at 9am the next morning. Thank you Mikka, you saved us a morning of walking around the local car hire shops (there are 4 or 5 in town) more time for us to enjoy our holiday! The hotel is very close to the beach, just a couple if minutes walk. The beach is protected because of the turtle nests so closes at 7.30pm to allow the hatching turtle’s free undisturbed access to the sea. The Kalamaki Beach Bar is great for lunch and drinks if you are spending the day at the beach. Back to the hotel... The rooms are basic, but clean and comfortable with hairdryer and TV (mostly Greek). The aircon was a godsend especially at night, thought we would have to pay extra in September but it was Free!. You will need to take some cheap plastic plugs with you (for bath & sink) we took some thanks to the other reviews and enjoyed many long soaks in the bath after a hard day in the sun!. We had a room at the rear of the hotel looking over the gardens facing towards the sea and mountains. The balcony was west facing so had the sun all evening until is set (lovely for a relax with a glass of wine) Also FANTASTIC views of the planes arriving and leaving. They were fascinating to watch and got some great pics too! Only a couple of mornings had early flights (5.30am) so were woken a couple of times, but thought hey it's just some more lucky people arriving in Zante!! You can get some great shots of the planes over the beach too. The food in the hotel is basic, but tasty usually something there for everyones taste (pasta, rice, chips, meat, veg, fruit, cheese, ham, lovely salads) . If you are looking for something more up-market head up to the Kalamaki strip (10 min walk) - Plenty of choice there. The Island itself is not vast, you can see it all in 3/4 days with a car. Driving there is so easy, just take your time, ignore the Greeks, the mad people on quad bikes, the pot holes, and the rubble roads! Our Hire car was a sight when we had finished with it - thick with rubble dust!! We didn’t take any organised trips, we drove to all the attractions, got a boat at the blues caves for 7 Euros each! Anyway i could keep writing loads more....... so stop reading and get your holiday to the Golden Sun, Zante booked. You will be pleasantly surprised when you get there!

Room Tip: Rear View Rooms - Evening Sun & Great Views of Planes! Pool Side Rooms - Morning Sun
