My husband and I were bicycling around Puglia and chose the Grand Hotel Tenuta Moreno because of its location -- it was the right distance between our prior night in Savelletri and our next stop in Lecce. It is in the middle of nowhere so to speak, although I can see why it is used for conventions and weddings -- it's right off the highway and has a lot of facilities. It is several miles outside Mesagne, which by the way has a very lovely central square and beautiful cathedral.
We were initially surprised when we arrived -- a sprawling property and on a Sunday afternoon there were multiple parties going on at once. However, we were greeted nicely (which is saying something, since we arrive on bicycle!), a bellboy went out of his way to help us put the bikes in a safe storage area, and the front desk staff were very pleasant. She even said that once we had cleaned up, she would take us to the bar for a complimentary drink.
The hotel is furnished attractively in the lobbies and hallways; our room (deluxe?) was very large (clearly appropriate for a family) and had a little private terrace, and very clean (tile floor, nice bathroom) but it's pretty sterile -- desk, beds, chair -- nothing upholstered and the bedspreads, curtains etc were not very attractive.
Still, when we did clean up and returned to the front desk, a woman took us on a tour of the property, explained why there were so many functions, and promised it would be quieter in the evening. She took us to the bar at the pool and we enjoyed a very lovely area and great drink. Later that evening, we ate in the hotel restaurant and found it more than satisfactory. It's an attractive room, although the lighting is too bright, and we had very good service and a very tasty meal. Maybe not big on "atmosphere", but it was very nice. Breakfast the next morning was an enormous buffet and we found that platters were filled or replaced very promptly. (Coffee service was odd though -- we had to chase down a waitress to order what we wanted and she never came back.)
All in all, it was a comfortable night and convenient for us. However, given all the other interesting, small, personal hotels we used during the rest of the trip, I would not choose the Grant Hotel except if the location was convenient. To my surprise, it seemed that some guests were staying for multiple nights or a whole week -- there are MUCH more atmostpheric places to stay in the lovely towns of Ostuni, Martina Franca, Alberobello or Lecce. It's not a bad place, just not very memorable and more for tour groups.
