We stayed at Chateau de Saint Paterne for a couple of nights in September 2011. This chateau is located in a pretty, quiet village a few kilometres from Alencon. It is a really beautiful chateau set in lovely grounds. There was plenty free parking in the courtyard at the front of the building. We received a friendly welcome and given a quick guide of the building. We were shown the two lounges and the dining room then taken to our room on the first floor. The rooms are beautifully furnished in period style. There was tea and coffee making facilities in the room plus a flat screen TV, iron and ironing board supplied. There was sufficient wardrobe space for a short stay. The en-suite bathroom had a bath over the shower but only had a hand-held shower and no shower curtain – so you did not linger long there and it was difficult to wash your hair without getting the floor wet. Big thick towels were provided and a hairdryer. Lovely hand-made soaps, which had a lovely scent and which were supplied in the bathroom were also offered for sale at the reception. In the lounge you are advised that you help yourself to any drinks from the bar and just leave a note of what you had in a little notebook. This is then added to your bill when you check out. Our room – Terasse Room was also nicely furnished in period style. It was large and comfortable and overlooked the lovely gardens and extensive grounds at the back of the hotel. On arrival, in the room was a ‘welcome carafe’ of the local fortified wine, Pommeau – a nice touch. Annoyingly the bedroom doors on our floor were a terrible fit and hard to lock and unlock. More annoying still was that our en-suite bathroom door was such a poor fit that it would not close (let alone lock). I did mention this to the chambermaid but nothing was done about it. You were free to walk around the chateau grounds, which was lovely to do. To the side there is a lovely outdoor pool and lounge area. You are also able to book a massage in your room if you wished. There was a very elegant candlelight restaurant but we did not eat in – dinner was from €47 per person. We did however, take breakfast there each morning which was €13 per person but well worth it. There was just so much on offer, breads, pastries yoghurts, fruit, savoury cold buffet etc. that there was something to suit everyone. The chateau and its rooms were full of character and period furnishings. On it’s website the hotel recommends a couple of pleasure drives in the area. We did one of them which was just delightful and I would most certainly recommend it.
