“Wonderful”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 3 October 2011

We have stayed at the Auberge on several occasions and have never been disappointed.

The rooms are comfortable and clean; the food and wines are excellent and the service cannot be faulted.

On one of the days of this stay, the heavens opened and we returned to the Auberge after a short dive into Amboise to pick up a sandwich for lunch. Francois was most accommodating and we had no problem spending the day in our room with our "picnic" - his greatest concern was that the room hadn't been serviced before our return!

Francois and Helene are a lovely couple and a big part of what makes this hotel special; quite often, in the late afternoon, they play in the garden with their two young children and I feel that because they obviously enjoy living there, as a family, it makes for a really welcoming atmosphere for their guests.

We've already booked for next year!

“Excellent Food and a good Stopover”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 14 September 2011

This is the fourth time we have stayed at this hotel. It is well located for a day or twos sightseeing in the Loire Valley. The rooms are simple but large. The highlight is the restaurant. Marvelous food and wine in a modern French Cuisine. The prices are good. The Auberge is not adjacent to anything else close so better to plan to eat at the Auberge rather than elsewhere but why would you eat elsewhere at night. Note you are only able to check in after 1500 hours

“Professionally run stopover”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 1 September 2011

My wife and I stayed for the night on a long drive south. It proved to be a quite slick and modernised version of the traditional French logis. Located very adjacent to the Loire although concealed from it by what appears to be a levee it is a few miles outside the old town of Amboise with its regulation chateau overlooking the old town and the river. Its location is relatively secluded despite the largely unobtrusive proximity of a camp site. The hotel and its bedrooms occupy what appears to be an old farm and its outbuildings; there is some sympathetic new build and the whole complex sits in well maintained gardens.

The room was quite simple but meticulously maintained and the same was true of the public areas in the main building. We slept well enough although the railway is conspicuous in its adjacent presence. Dinner was good with food and service professional in its presentation. The menu nodded in the direction of fusion cooking although the ingredients were traditional enough in the form of a vegetable terrine, prawns, beef and pintade with millefeuille for desert. Breakfast was served in a pleasant conservatory. The whole was presided over by the youngish owner and his wife in an extremely organised and efficient way; I gather they have served their time in the upper echelons of the hotel trade and I thought it showed in the brisk professionalism of their operation.

This isn't dirt cheap if you dine as well as stay. With drinks dinner would exceed £30 a head and as is usual in France breakfast isn't included in the room rate. However the room for two was reasonable at around £60. We were impressed by the overall experience. After over thirty years of driving through France we were beginning to assume a more sceptical stance about the quality of country inns but this stood up well against previous experiences even though the exchange rate now precludes real bargains. I would certainly recommend this as a stopover and for anyone sightseeing for a few days in the Loire region you could do worse than view it as a possible base.

“Lovely setting and great food”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 7 August 2011

Our family stayed for 2 nights in August. The hotel setting and grounds are lovely. We particularly enjoyed sitting in the "grotto" in the evenings before dinner sipping Loire valley wine. The food and service are top notch, dinners were excellent with a focus on local items. The only downs side, is the room was a bit stuffy with no air conditioning. Our room was of a typical size for Europe or a city like New York, so it might be considered small by some. However, 2 adults and 1 child were comfortable. As others have noted, there is a bit of noise from the train tracks nearby, but it was not overly bothersome.

“Excellent overnight stay”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 1 August 2011

Having read some excellent reviews, we decided to book this hotel as an overnight stay on our way down to Spain. I am happy to say that we were not disappointed. The hotel is located in a rural area but has its own excellent restaurant. We had two garden rooms which were both a good size, they had a small seating area in the room and a decent bathroom. It was all very clean and the beds were comfortable. The hotel has a delighful garden and a pretty terrace where you can have drinks before dinner. We ate in the restaurant and the food was exceptional. A starter and main or main and desert were around 20 euros. The cheapest bottle of wine was about 11 euros. This meal in an equivalent English restaurant would be far more expensive.
