I have just returned from Tartessus with my wife and 7 year old daughter. We chose it because it offers self catering accommodation. We wanted a base to explore the area and somewhere where we could cook our own food, was near a beach, and had a nice pool. Tartessus certainly meets these requirements. We were pleased with the place. It is new so everything is still in good condition. There are studios, one bed and two bed flats there. We stayed in a 2 bedroom on the ground floor. The accommodation was good. There was a kitchen with 2 hobs and a micro wave, fridge, pots and pans and knives, forks, cups, plates and a dishwasher! The flat was air conditioned. We were there at the end of July and the start of August and were surprised that we didn't need to use the air con because it was not humid as there was a pleasant sea breeze. The bedrooms are bigger than they look on the pictures, and the bathrooms are pleasant. Although the drain in ours did smell a little which we helped with chemicals.
The swimming pool was the best thing about Tartessus. It is really nice and was never crowded. Most of the families there were Spanish and the children were well behaved! There are plenty of sun loungers around the pool and it is large. There was a children's entertainer there too who organised games and activites for the kids. The gardens surrounding the appartments are very green and pleasant. With nice water features. There is also a laundry on the site where you can wash your own clothes for 3 euros 70 cents. There were some areas where improvments could be made. The food in the restaurant was very average. The level of cleaning in the appartment could have been better. There were some teathing problems with the shower flooding the floor, and a damp patch appearing on the ceiling,. Also , more seriously, there was something wrong with the door handles which meant that on one occassion we became locked in the bedroom. Luckily we were able to escape via a window door onto the patio. However, had this happed in the bathroom we may have been locked in there for a whole week! This is because there is no daily cleaning service at the appartments (unless you pay extra for this service) so nobody would know you are trapped. So I would strongly advice anyone staying here to be aware that the door handles at Tartessus can be faulty and not to get yourselfs locked in to a room you can't get out of!
The above were reported to reception and they were very helpful and quickly solved the problems.
Tartessus has a miniture train style shuttle that goes to the beach every hour from the hotel. It is probably advisable to hire a car if you come to Tartessus. You can park in the hotel car park at a fee. But we found we could park on the road outside for free very easily. Immediately around the hotel there is currently little to see. However, there is a large shopping centre being built next to it but it looks like it is a long way off completion. By hiring a car you can make the most of the area and there are lots of places to visit within a short drive. You can buy fresh bread and groceries in a shopping centre which is about a 5 minute drive from the hotel. Reception have a map how to get there.
The nearest beach is called Barrosso. It is really nice. It is about 5 minutes away in a car from the hotel. About 15 minutes on foot. But the walk to it is along a stretch of road which is past land that looks like it is awaiting development. It is a very exposed, and not particularly pleasant, walk in the strong sun. So it is best to wait for the hotel beach shuttle service if I was you!
All in all we really enjoyed our holiday here and would consider returning in the future.
