HOTEL:
Just returned from Santorini. Enjoyed staying at this hotel - spotlessly clean and had everything we needed. We booked with Thomas cook and paid around £370 for a week B&B mid August - everything went without a hitch. The room was ideal for us (see photo). The bathroom was small with a shower tray and shower which is common in Greece and to be expected. We had no problem with this at all. Again it served its purpose well - the hot water supply was pretty good too. If you wanted aircon it was 7 Euro per day - if you are going in the summer months definitely budget for this - it reached 45 degress celcius while we were there! There was a safety deposit box in the room and this cost 10 Euro per week. Well worth the peace of mind. Towels were provided and rooms cleaned daily. Linen and towels changed twice a week. There were 2 nice pools with free loungers (see photo), one with a bar. There was also a breakfast room and lounge with TV (oh, and our room had a TV too which I've never experienced in Greece!). The only downside was the breakfast - I would recommend going self catering at this place which you can opt for. Breakfast consisted of tea or coffee, sunny delight like juice, 2 slices of bread with butter and jam. We expected basic but maybe not that basic - maybe some fruit and yoghurt would have been nice. However, the lovely old lady (who I think may own the place) works really hard and was lovely to us every morning, serving the breakfasts.
LOCATION & FOOD:
Ideal location away from promenade - you are totally overlooked by passers by if you stay down there and it would be noisy at night. I've included a map - even though it looks on the outskirts, Kamari is small - it was a 5 minute walk to the beach and you can stroll along the front and back in about 40 minutes. The hotel is circled red. The nearest exchange is over the road circled yellow. The nearest supermarket was a few minutes walk circled pink. The 2 green circles were the best places that we ate; 'Alexanders' and 'Petrinos' - everywhere else wasn't as nice as these 2 although there was a decent Italian near 'Kamari Tours' on the promenade but it was pricey. Most places on the front are pricey and the ones that aren't usually reflect this in their meals/service. Also a decent little taverna up from the supermarket on the right - very reasonable. Apart from the Italian we ate Greek everynight.
KAMARI:
Nice beach resort, lively but not in the 'Malia' sense of the word - Santorini is a respectable Island, attracting people from all over the globe and is a nice place for couples and families. I would say its the best beach resort on the Island although Perissa was good too. Nice promenade; black sand/pebble beach; clear water (lovely! But gets deep quick and is pebbly so I wore rock/beach shoes which were perfect - you can buy them for about 6 Euro out there); 7 Euro per lounger per person on the beach but you can just lay your towel down if you wish, lots of people did); beach not overcrowded but still busy; lots of restaurants/bars and shops; several ATMs; good bus service around the Island (all buses go to Thira then you catch connecting buses to where you want to go). There is a water taxi (4 Euro one way) that takes you around the rock (mountain!) to Perissa beach (which you can then walk on to Perivolos and Agios Georgios beaches), otherwise you have to go by land around the mountain via motor vehicle. Everything was pretty good here, no complaints!
CAR HIRE:
We hired a car through Thomas Cook/Avis - totally hassle free. Best way to see the Island otherwise you will fork out loads on excursions unless you bus it, but buses can get overcrowded at peak times. Also there are only 35 cabs on the island! Car hire was about £90 for 2 1/2 days and we saw everything we wanted. Caution: not for the nervous driver - Santorini is mountainous and some routes are hair raising! People who hire mopeds or quad bikes must be crazy! No offence!
ANCIENT THIRA:
There is a bus that goes up the mountain from Kamari - we took the car and it is scary if you have to pass another vehicle on the edge! There's a bit of a climb once you reach the top but the views are great - you can see Kamari over one side of the mountain and Perissa/ Perivilos/ Agios Georgios on the other. You are really close to the top of Mount Elias here, the highest point that gives a 360 degree view of the Island - you can drive up there but after driving up this mountain (called Mount Vouno) we decided to give it a miss! Anyway, Ancient Thira is interesting and I'm not into stuff like that but I enjoyed it.
CHURCH OF EPISKOPI:
Picturesque little Church on the way to Pyrgos.
PYRGOS:
Unusually interesting - high up with winding little 'corridors' leading to the odd shop/ coffee shop. Some nice churches and a few eateries here. Really enjoyed a couple of hours here - GREAT views of Thira and the Caldera.
THIRA & FIROSTEFANI:
Went to see the sunset - it was nice but not sure why its rated the best in the world, I think it depends where you've been and what you've seen before (I know that sounds cocky but unintended and it's the best way I can describe what I mean). Very romantic though, especially if you can get a table for dinner in the many tavernas overlooking the Caldera. Thira (Fira) is really nice - bustling and very cosmo, lots of little streets, a bit like a maze. Lovely Cathedral, we saw a wedding whilst there. We actually saw the sunset by walking along the cliff face - very quiet along there (heading towards Firostefani). Firostefani joins onto Fira and is a tranquil verson of Fira. If you stay at either be happy to settle for no beach, get a hotel with a pool. There are restaurants overlooking the Caldera at Firostefani too.
OIA:
BEAUTIFUL - don't miss it! Just gorgeous version of Fira but very Arty, cosmo and just wonderful. Amazing view of Caldera - had we not had to drive back after dark along another bendy mountainous road we would have preferred to watch the sunset from here. Stunning in our opinion. There are restaurants overlooking the Caldera at here too. If we came back to Santorini I would like to stay here I think, although I think I'd miss the lovely clear sea - if you stay here be happy to settle for no beach - get a hotel with a pool. There is a beach but its a hike down there (and worse back up!) unless you have a car - it is also very small.
PERISSA:
Really nice, small verson of Kamari. However the beach here, we thought, was loads better. The sea bed was sandy (black) and the water crystal clear (as is Kamari) - gradually getting deeper so better for children. We went here several times.
PERIVOLOS & AGIOS GEORGIOS BEACHES:
You can walk along the front from Perissa to reach these beaches. Very quiet.
AKROTIRI & RED BEACH:
Near Akrotiri but a hell of a hike - best get there by boat if you want to see it. Only difference is the rock face is red. Near by is a much more accessible beach... Akrotiri. Didnt get a 'feel' for this area. However we visited the Lighthouse which had great views of the Island.
VOLCANO & HOT SPRINGS:
We did this as an excursion which cost 22 Euro pp with Kamari Tours. Basically you swim in the hot springs (which aren't that hot) - wear dark swim wear as it is a rust colour and if you dont like your feet touching the bottom the old rock shoes are a Godsend! You have to swim about 30M from the boat in the sea to get to the springs. Then we climbed the Volcano - not for the unfit - take loads of water, sunscreen and a hat! Very strenuous in that heat. To be honest we weren't really that impressed - once we climbed to the top we were told that the live crater is actually beneath sea level! Some fab views though.
OVERALL:
I think I've covered it all. We had a good holiday however we thought Santorini had been bigged up a bit too much. Dont get me wrong, it IS lovely but I think it depends on where you've travelled. We actually preferred Skiathos - each to their own, I'm sure some may disagree! My family do! If you have any questions I'm more than happy to help. If you do go, Syrigos Hotel was good and Santorini IS lovely - sure you'll have a lovely time.
