This was the most perfect holiday! Exactly what I wanted! I went with my mum and 15yr old sister and we wanted a week of sun, relaxing with a book by the pool during the day and plenty of wine and typical tavernas for the evening. Booked independantly and had no issues at all, glad not to have a rep, don''t be forced along to a meeting at Kamari Tours the day after you arrive if you have transfers with them, they post details of return transfer under your door the day before the flight, only info you need from them, do everything on your own.
Firstly, a nice easy transfer in a A/C minibus to resort nearby but not affected by aircraft noise at all. Arrived at the friendly family run Blue Sea Apartments. Warm welcome with an awful local spirit (alcohol in dishwater i think he he he), shown to a surprisingly spacious, airy room with adequate kitchen facilities to make breakfast and light lunch - undercounter fridge with ice box, 2ring burner, glasses/mugs/pots/pans and utensils. Bathroom - typical Greece - gets whole room wet but never stayed anywhere in Greece that this isn't the case and hot water plentiful throughout the day. What more can you ask for??? Double bed and a single with a dressing table and dining table and chairs, garden furniture and airing rack on the balcony.
So clean, old couple that owned the place kept the staff on the go all day, when not cleaning the rooms and changing the linen every morning they were painting benches or tidying the flower pots always busy
Pool area lovely and exceeded our expectations for the price we paid. 2 pools to choose from, one much more shady but both had a small snack bar - was opening these on the day we left, we were first week of the season all still opening up. Bar in reception basic but adequate if a bit old fashioned, not always manned so sometimes took a while for someone to wander through and they didn't have any diet coke for a few days but some turned up in her next delivery, they obviously were not too interested in revenue from keeping you in the hotel which so not hassled by staff at all, all good as far as I'm concerned. We didn't go to breakfast so can't comment on anything as far as that is concerned.
No hotel entertainment suited us down to the ground did not want to be forced into water aerobics and water polo every afternoon, one street from main drag with too many places to eat/drink to choose from - we didn't get to everywhere we wanted to try. Mostly family run greek tavernas with tables lining the beach, a few places that looked as if they were more like clubs/beach front bars but not open yet. Must try Hooks Bar for cheesy rock and a cocktail, plenty of happy hour deals along the main drag.
Food is typical greek dishes, pizza/pasta, grills, fresh fish seems to be a speciality in Santorini and you must try one of the mixed platter offers during your visit, come just off the main drag where prices drop slightly but certainly not the quality. We found Mistral (straight over at Food Corner towards Ivona Market) owned by a fisherman who then sold it that evening in his taverna, delicious! And with decent enough local wine. Atmoshere a bit dead when we were in there but had a Greek night on Friday and according to someone we chatted to round the pool it was a fun evening.
Every evening was fantastic throughout our stay. Had bought some pasta and sauce on the first day as planned to eat in one night but we ended up out every night all looked too nice to miss out on. Tried Posedion along the front on our first night, friendly and food good, Family Taverna also along the front was fantastic, owner Dimitris was so proud of his renovations and he couldn't do enough for us, he had us hitting the Ouzo after dinner (not costing us anything) and watching Barcelona v Chelsea at the back of his restaurant, my sister says try the baklava its the best. Went back here for our final night and nearly took a job for the season - I so didn't want to come home. I must also recommend Metpino, very close to Blue Sea (left at Food Corner its on the left next to supermarket), delicious dolmardes and couldn't decide on one meal so had to share different dishes, all fab - a little wait for the food all cooked to order in very clean kitchens. Hooks bar saw us most nights for a after dinner cocktail or three!
Book excursions/carhire on your own. Kamari Tours charged 32EUR for hire that cost 20EUR everywhere else. All places included insurance and 5litres of petrol took us all over the island - we did not stop laughing the entire day, go and find a really bendy mountain road its like being on your very own rollercoaster, especially when you see the little memorial shrines on the road side! You have to go to Fira and Oia. We are not normally day trippers not wanting to miss a day of sunbathing but had a beautiful day, never seen such a pretty place as Oia its like something from a film set. We were warned about both towns being really expensive but found souvenirs no more expensive than Kamari and if you went on street off the Caldera it was actually cheaper than Kamari, los of these places had roof terraces so could probably still see everything anyway. We ended up staying in Oia for a meal eventhough we hadn't planned to and it was fantastic value for money with breathtaking views and again brilliant customer service Thalami Taverna. But do be careful as Oia does cater for "rich Americans" lots of spas, boutique hotels and plush restaurants so yes you can be ripped off if you don't look first.
The temperature was much higher in resort during the day than what was being quoted on websites but there is a breeze in the evening that I found quite chilly - pack a jumper this time of year just for the evening but sure it is a god send in high season.
I am normally ready to come home to catch up on missed gossip after a week but I honestly think I could have stayed the entire season in Santorini and not missed home for a minute. Recommended it to everyone since I've been home and the Blue Sea already have a booking thanks to my rave reviews. If you want typical Greece you are going to fall in love with this island - please don't let the new EasyJet route ruin it - loud mouth "Brits abroad" KEEP OUT!!!
