“cheap, service not great, good location.”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 3 October 2011

I can't help but echo many of the comments from the review below. The older lady usually on reception speaks very poor english. Our luggage did not arrive with us and when we tried to explain to her that she may get a phone call from our rep, she did not seem bothered or even to understand and just wanted to get us out of the reception area. Breakfast is largely inedible, fatty ham, cheese slices and chunks of bread. other than this, there is a cereal option and yoghurt. We ended up buying breakfat most days, or dinning in the aegean plaza where our friends were staying- if you have the extra money, this hotel is 10 times better!

The air conditioning is rather temperamental and not really effective for the first 20mins or so. The bathroom is very small and always smelled of sewerage. The shower temperature would fluctuate from scalding hot, to freezing cold, and then to nothing at all if other people in the hotel were showering! I had to wait 15mins to finish washing my hair. We also had a late flight and the stroppy receptionist would not let us stay in the room longer even when we offered to pay. on the board and on our documents it said that checkout was midday, yet we were forced out at 10:50 and there is no where to leave your luggage other than the reception area. We didnt feel particularly safe leaving luggage here, especially after losing it once already..
The rooms are very comfortable, however the doors are very thin so you get woken up from 7am by people elsewhere in the hotel slamming doors. There is also a small fridge provided in the room.

On a positive note, the location is excellent, and there are many nice bars nearby. Go to Kings for white chocolate crepes which are incredible!!!!!

Nice island, expensive, but there are far better places to stay.

“Never treated so badly in 40 years of traveling!”

We arrived at the Hotel Avra very hot and tired. We were told we would have to stay in a "not so good" room for one night and then move to another room for the remaining 3 nights. This was a considerable inconvenience for us but there was nothing we could do so we took it in stride. The hotel clerk told us she would give us one free day of the safe use (Total value 1 Euro) for the inconvenience. The room we were taken to was definitely "not so good". The air conditioning, ceiling fan and bathroom light did not work. I walked back to reception (which was not near our room) to explain these problems. 2 people came to the room and while they were trying to repair everything I called the travel agency who had booked the room for us and left a message saying if the hotel could not get the AC to work, we would like a different hotel for the night. They finally did get everything to work after some time and effort so we stayed. The next day we packed everything up for the move and left to go touring. Upon our return the desk clerk began to reprimand me for having called the travel agency. She was very accusatory and said we had called them that day and wanted to leave the hotel. I explained we had called the previous night when the AC did not work. She implied that we had lied about the AC not working because she had gone to the room and checked that day and it was working. She said "why would it be working today and not have worked yesterday?" My answer was that they had come and fixed it!!! After her terrible attitude I said that I thought it would be fair if we received free wifi for our troubles. She SHOUTED "NO! I told you yesterday you would get only the free safe!" Yes you did; but this was before the AC, fan and light did not work. That night when I went up to the office to get the wifi, she told me it would be 8 euros and we must pay for the wifi for the entire stay right then. I did not have 8 euros with me, so I had to walk back to the room (quite a distance and up to the 3rd floor room) and get the euros. Normally we pay our hotel bill upon check-out but this was not the case at Hotel Avra. The 2nd room was fine but the horrible attitude of this desk clerk really spoiled our stay. We have been traveling all over the world for 40 years and have never been treated this badly at a hotel. She apparently does not know that it is a service industry. We would never return and will tell friends to avoid this place!

“Quiet and convenient.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 2 September 2011

We stayed for a week in July 2011. Comfortable and family friendly with helpful staff. Close enough to the beach and shops to be accessible but just far enough for peaceful evenings and nights.

“Little Gem - really enjoyed my stay”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 9 June 2011

I stayed here for the first week in June. We were visiting for our friends wedding and rest of the party stayed in other hotels around the resort. After having a nosy around their hotels, although they were all much posher and expensive, I can honestly say the location and aspect of the Avra was much better.

We were very lucky with the room we were allocated as we had a lovely side sea view and also a view of the mountains. There are 2 bulidings to the hotel, we were in the second one which I think is advertised as garden view rather than pool view. There are four rooms on each floor of the buliding. It is worth mentioning that the balconies are all in a row with low walls between them and so you can see other guests sometimes out on their balconies (look at my pictures to see what I mean). The room was very comfortable and had air conditioning, a tv and a fridge. The bathroom was nice compared to other places we have stayed in Greece. Nothing fancy, but clean and a good shower over the bath.

The reception service was a bit hit and miss. One morning we asked if it would be possible to hire/borrow an iron, but the girl on reception told us to return at 7pm to ask again as her boss was asleep. As we were going to a wedding the next day we ended up carrying our clothes to another hotel to iron them rather than risk asking again at 7pm and being told no. They were very friendly though. The WIFI isn't free as someone said in an earlier review. It costs 2 euros per day.

The location of the hotel is very good. It is about 50 metres from the beach, and is located at the end of the resort. As such it is nice and peaceful and the beach is quieter. There are plenty of nice bars and restaurants right near to the hotel and a couple of supermarkets, again all withn 50 metres. It is very near to the start of the runway at the airport. However, although this sounds bad, there is only about 1 plane an hour, on some days much less. Also, the planes come in over the sea and beach and so many hotels in Kamari are in the same boat. We only heard one early in the morning once (while we were still asleep), but it did make us jump. The planes land over the hotel, but take off in the other direction. You can't hear the planes taking off at all, only landing. It didn't have any impact on our enjoyment of the hotel at all though, and I found myself running out onto the balcony to watch them fly over!

As has been said previously, the breakfast is very basic, but typically Greek. It consisted of bread, one type of cold meat, one type of cheese, butter & jam, greek yoghurt and honey, tea, coffee and orange juice. Lots of people were suplementing it with their own bits and bobs like tomato or hams, but we found it quite enjoyable. The breakfast area was nice and we sat outside to eat it overlooking the pool and the mountains.

I really enjoyed our stay at the Avra. It was friendly, comfortable and very well located and when we return to Kamari in the future I will definitely stay there again.

“Friendly staff in an ideal location”

My wife and I stayed at the Avra for Two weeks in July/Aug 2010 and thoroughly enjoyed our holiday. Our room was on the second floor and had a great view towards Thira and Mesa Gourno. The room was cleaned every day by one of the cheerful cleaners.
The breakfast is typically Greek but plenty of it. The pool is plenty big enough for the size of the hotel. The Avra is only a matter of a five minutes stroll to the beach.
Along the road to the beach there are two supermarkets, a resturant and a snack bar. Call at the SPLASH BAR for a snack or a drink and say hello to Fortini and her friendly staff.
As Arnie says " WE WILL BE BACK"
