“Good value”

Third time of staying in these apts, they are basic but clean with all you need for self catering, only gripe is the t.v its about time they upgraded to digi flat screens, not that we spent much time in the room but it would be nice to get something other than bbc world news. There is a smashing pub attached to the hotel called the Dog & Duck, serves old speckled hen and guinness for 3 euros,no food just great easy listening music and a lovely atmosphere.Mark and Michelle are a delightful couple doing a great job.

“Nice relaxing week”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 8 February 2012

My boyfriend and I stayed here for a week in January. On arrival our room was'nt ready so had to wait an hour or so but we did arrive around lunchtime before check in time. Hotel staff are very helpful.
No complaints about the room, it was clean, spacious and beds were comfy.
The complex is very big and did seem a little deserted at times but that was probably due to the time of year. There are 3 good sized swimming pools and the pool areas were kept clean. Sunbeds were'nt the comfiest, but was'nt a major issue for us. Some people have mentioned aircraft noise, yes you hear them during the day but not a night so it did not bother us.
We were self catering so can not comment on the food, drinks around the pool were quite pricey.
We ate out every night, there are some lovely restaurants. El Fado Rock Steak House was our favourite. Miss Americas is also good & you get big portions. There are a few good bars, O'Connors Irish bar has a live band on who are really good and staff very friendly. Sugar and The Cave were nice and do decent happy hours. Aloha is very nice and upmarket, more of a chill out bar.
Weather wise, it was cloudy the first couple of days but sunny the rest. Temperature was around 25 degrees but it is quite windy which can take the edge of how hot the sun is. Would recommend to take a jacket, cardigan, jumper etc for the evening as it can get chilly.
We really enjoyed our week away and would recommend for anyone looking for a chilled winter get away.

“What is there to do?!”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 6 February 2012

Me and my partner staying in the apartments in castillo san jorge, the room or should i say rooms were lovely, the decor was a little dated i accept, but the shear size or the room alone; blew us away.
The whole hotel is like a miniture village, and we enjoyed finding different places dotted around, beware it is easy to get lost!!
Situated right on the rocks by the sea, we had a great view, we were in the end block furthest away from the actual beach, as there was a brilliant view of the sea and the next little town opposite. There was absolutly no noise at night and we found the bed's to be quite comfortable for a 3* hotel.
Once we figured out how to order the drinks in the evening, we really enjoyed going down for our meals, we went all inclusive. We are not that fussy eaters however found myself eating mostly chips, one night was a seafood evening, and we could see alot of people complaining, as there was no other option for those who donnt eat fish!! this was not well planned for a family hotel.
One downside to this hotel was, that there wasnt much for us to do, one the first two nights we sat in the bar which was not all inclusive on the other side of the complex, but it got a little boring, as not many people around. We then discovered the entertainment team, Oswald and Frank, who are amazing at their jobs, and manage to get everyone involved, you can really tell they love their jobs and working with children.
However i will not be returning to this hotel, because the area was just generally really quite,, i would love it to have more shops and bars around, as there were a few but not as many as we are used to seeing in other holiday resorts.

Room Tip: Ask to be in the end block of apartments, as it has the biggest pool and is the quitest overall.

“BACK TO THE EIGHTIES”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 6 February 2012

We took a taxi from the airport (12 euros) 6km away to the hotel and on arrival we were dropped off at what the driver called the main reception - the building called San Jorge.
We checked in on 6th Jan.for our 7 nights all inclusive and were told our room was in the next building called the Suites to the left of the San Jorge (building to the right was called Hotel Antigua
We headed to the next buildings (approx 120 metres )reception doors thinking- Are we in the right place??????. Reception desk unmanned and covered in dust - no-one about at all within this delapidated area- one lift broken - went up to our third floor room and it felt as if we were in a prison block - everything on the ground floor was closed - a snack bar - a western style saloon bar - squash courts - a shop up for sale/let - pool with no-one around it - telephone cubicals with no phones in - derelict doesn`t even describe it.
In to the room - It was as if we had been transported back in time to the eighties.
- Self Catering style twin room - cooker hob with fan, fridge, cupboards and drawers with crockery and cutlery with a table and chairs, rusty microwave and a large bin under a sink and draining board. The extending washing/clothes horse was missing from the veranda - there were ants crawling up the wall at the cooking area and dining table and the bathroom door would not re-open when it was shut.
TV was hazy most days we had it on but we only used the room as a base so that didn`t matter too much.
The veranda was facing the side of the San Jorge and got sun from 8.30am for about 45 minutes.
Went back and reported this to reception in the other building and they sent a joiner to repair the door within 1 hour and there was a very large spray can of ant killer left in the room - which did the trick by the way, however no washing line for the duration.
All the restaurant, snack bar facilities and a bar are in the San Jorge and there is the "entertainment" and a bar in the Antigua
The one good thing the hotel had going for it was the food which was very good with plenty of choice and variety with something for everyone and the majority of the hotel staff were very pleasant and helpful.
Entertainment for adults was virtually non existant or just rubbish - and there was half an hour of childrens entertainment per night.
Ladies and gents "evening entertainment bar" toilet was 50yds away from the bar at a poorly lit area beside the pool and the toilet lights were on a sensor switch at the door which went out often before the toilets were vacated
The English bar was uninviting with uncomfortable high wooden(only) seats and bar-stools. We found out during our stay that the part of the hotel we stayed in was bought by the owners of the San Jorge as an overflow for the main hotel and the Antigua and was used a lot for self catering aswell so if your sent to the Suites. BEWARE!!
These three buildings need a good refurbishment (especially the Suites ) to bring them into this century.

Room Tip: Ask for a pool facing room in the San Jorge - a bit noisier but gets the sun and the rooms are suppo...

“So disappointed”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 5 February 2012

Arrived home 5 Feb 2012, this was the second time we had stayed in these appartments the first time about 7 years ago, when we had a great time. We booked this trip last minute with only a week to go, believing that as we had been before everything would be OK, how wrong we were. Arriving about 7pm, we were told that we were not in Castillo San Jorge (which we had booked) but in Castillo Suites, there was only the reception in Castillo Antigua operating and the other two buildings reception's were deserted and slightly derelict looking. The outisde of the apartment was looking very tired, as we went in, the bathroom was very poor, the shower was hanging off the wall, the shower curtain rail was bent and misshapen. The bathroom was poorly cleaned with hairs and dust over the floor.

The kitchen again was poorly cleaned with dirt on the floor around the fridge, which looked like it had never been cleaned since it was installed, with dirt ingrained in all the seals around the doors.

The room was designed for four people, yet it only contained three cups, saucers plates and bowls. the bars in the fridge door that held bottles in place, were missing and a glass shelf was broken. The furniture in the lounge had obviously seen many years of service, we were so glad that we a couple and did not have to put anyone else through the ordeal of having to sleep on the manky sofa bed! With a broken pane of glass too the patio doors, I am so glad we did not have children with us as this may have been a problem.

The bedroom was nothing to shout about, tired and worn, it was adequate to put your head down but that was all. The first night was very cold, with only a sheet a cover and one blanket, we ended up sleeping in sweatshirts and jackets to keep warm. Whilst I accept the hotel cannot be held accountable for the weather when asked for more blankets they were very slow to respond.

The hotel literature boasts a number of features that it does not have and when questioned the staff denied they had ever had them and did not know where we had got the information from. (they were not familiar with their own brochure that was in the room.)

The supermarket attached to the complex was not open at all during the week. There are a number of shops, bars and resteraunts within the complex that are empty and up for rent. The terraces and pools were however very clean and cleaned every day, even when it was too cold for them to be used. If the weather had of been warmer so we could have spent less time in the apartment the holiday would have prehaps been better. We did not eat in any of the resteraunts on site and went out every night as there are some excellent eateries within walking distance.
