“How did they get their reputation?”

(Restaurant only)
Service could only have been outdone by Fawlty Towers. Food designed to impress not to be enjoyed (did neither).
From the lack of atmosphere to the unfriendly service this was a memorable evening for the wrong reasons. The food did nothing to improve anyone's mood. They really need to get back to basics and take a good look at what they are providing.

“3 Stars = Average (dining only)”

However the price isn't.

I think to say this was an average dining experience is fair, even tough at the time I was quite annoyed. Like a number of reviewers here I was expecting something fabulous - why wouldn't you? I've eaten fabulous food in the past a quite modest bistros and gastro pubs so this shouldn't have been an issue for the Michelin Starred Fischers.

Well, put simply, the food 'looked' fabulous but was tasteless. I hate it when restaurants do this. My lamb was beautifully pink but tasted of nothing. I was utterly dumb founded. The foams and jellies that decorated the plate were as equally tasteless. Talk about being taken for a ride! It was like one of those 'emperor's new clothes' moments. You can't believe it can be true but just continue with a kind of dazed feeling in your head.

The only thing that wasn't tasteless was one of the canapes which, from what I could fathom, was a small egg covered in a odd fish flavoured mayonnaise - it was gag inducing! If these flavour combinations are what fine dining is all about then no thanks.
My pudding however was a perfectly executed raspberry souffle. Nice flavour but nothing exceptional; presented simply in a ramekin.

Service was polite and cool.

Baslow Hall is a beautiful place and a lovely setting for a dining experience. However, after having my fingers burnt once I don't feel confident enough to go back and try again considering the expense. I really hope things have changed and I'm sure there are other customers that have had good meals but based on my experience a Michelin Star restaurant this aint.

“Somehow not quite right (dinner only)”

We live quite locally and eat here once or twice a year - an anniversary, and the occasional ad hoc visit. I guess the fact that we have returned several times says something. Yet there is something not quite there about the place. The food is really very good indeed (notwithstanding the occasional lunacy): but "very good indeed" doesn't quite cut it for the price.

If it were just a matter of saying the food is great but a bit overpriced, that perhaps wouldn't matter. It's a treat, and let's worry about value for money another day. But the problems are deeper. The dining room lacks atmosphere, and is really quite bizarrely decorated. Service is slightly odd - veering from near overattentiveness at times, to disappearing at others. I had to work really hard to get a post-dinner whisky. More strangely yet, a rather good cheese board was produced, but biscuits were in short supply, and we had to hunt a waiter down. The place also follows what to my mind is a simply bizarre ritual of not only pouring your wine for you, but actually keeping the bottle on a distant sideboard. Even if the staff were attentive enough to make this work seamlessly - as they are not - it is weird. It may hark back to some ancient convention, but it is still weird.

I think I'd sum it up by saying there are two problems: odd, irritating little glitches; but, much more seriously, a slight air of joylessness to the place. Because there are lots of things to like, you certainly couldn't say it's altogether bad. But not quite there, and I'd be reluctant to encourage anyone other than my richest friends to risk it

“Dinner only”

We'd been looking forward to a meal here - running my own business in tourism in the local area I try to eat at local restaurants in order to recommend them to my guests. Service good, but over the top. e.g. "May I introduce you to the menu." Staff knew about the wine and food on the menu, cuts of meat etc. The food was disappointing for the price. We went for the £63 per head menu for 3 courses. The fish, which we had for a starter, was over cooked. The main course, was very good, but elaborate and over-dressed. We decided to try the dessert assiette, which had a sample of each dessert on the menu; none were very inspiring, and I, being a dessert fan, left most of mine. The old fashioned decor needs completely re-doing, as it is does detract terribly from the enjoyment and ambience of the meal; floral walls, clashing carpet, misplaced pictures, bad lighting. In short, they think that they are good here, and they mean well, but they aren't as good as they think they are. I won't go back, but the food and wine is definitely better than most in the area. Could be fantastic if there was a major refurbishment in the dining room. Do they deserve their reputation?

“Hospitality? The owner needs lessons on customer service!!!”

I rang Fischers on 14th Oct to book a sunday lunch for my boyfriends birthday in December, I spoke to a lovely lady on reception and asked about a childs size portion as I have had weight loss surgery, she said that they do childrens meals for £18.50 and it would be a half portion, she said this would be fine and took my £20.00 deposit, I have been catered to in this way at ALOT of restaurants. I received a phone call this afternoon from a VERY rude female, she told me that I would not be able to have the childs menu as I was an adult, not a child, I explained to her about my surgery, she said for £18.50 they couldn't do it and I could have a main course for £20 or a starter for £10, I said this wasn't very good when I had paid my deposit and told it would be ok, and that other places had catered for me, she said I was paying for the ambience at the Fischers, she said maybe I should "reconsider" my booking, her whole attitude for disgraceful, my boyfriend telephoned back and it turned out it was the OWNER!!!.......I have now asked for my deposit back and will book the Losehill House Hotel in Hope, they have catered for me before and the food is of a very high standard, I will give my money to someone who thinks that the way she treated me was acceptable, and obviously puts money before customer satisfaction and being recommended to others!! Not good in the credit crunch climate!!
