Decided to give this place another chance having been perhaps twice since our last review in 2007. We last came about 18 months ago and found menu and service not really value for considerable cost. This time, however, things were different. Firstly, the weather was excellent. Very important, I feel, to get decent weather if you are wanting to explore this area as the elements can be rather extreme at times, particularly in winter.
We took advantage of a promotion offer which was 50% off the b&b price ( we chose the large, garden room, now £112.50 for a couple ). These rooms are fine if not the best in the area. The restaurant is what we had really come for, however, and the food did not disappoint us. Scallops for starters, steak and duck for mains, selection of dessert for 2. Top quality for most of this ( desserts have been better in the past ). Unfortunately, the one "fly in the ointment" was the service. VERY poor spoken English from the Eastern Europe waiting staff made any kind of dialogue about the food impossible. They appeared to only know a few scripted sentences and that was it. Breakfast was excellent as was the service from a lady who although sounded foreign spoke pretty fluent English. Check out was smooth.
This is an expensive hotel, even with special offers it is still in the top price sector. However, they have the culinary talent to provide a great dining experience as long as you are prepared to accept the very limited communication available with staff.
