“Hmmmm..... it was ok!”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 23 August 2011

I booked this through booking.com where it had ok reviews, then checked Trip Advisor after (stupidly) and it had awful reviews. I went with an open mind though as we had the 'King Suite' and it was only £75 and we were only using it as a stopover on the way to a wedding.

The food in the restaurant was very nice, the staff were all very nice (but ALL very young) and the room, at first glance, was lovely.

The rooms are where this place lacks... they look lovely when you first walk in but then you realise they haven't been cleaned properly, there are stains everywhere, i found popcorn under the bed and their is dust everywhere.

There is also no hotel manual with any info on the local area, internet, hotel facilities etc etc. There was one laminated notice stuck on the cupboard door saying the room came with a DVD player, iron, ironing board and something else (can't remember what) BUT not one of the above mentioned was actually in the room.

We had a GIANT tv on the wall that had 4 channels with awful reception however we had 4 remote controls for things that weren't in the room!!

Also... only stay there if you don't want an early night. The music in the bar (below all the rooms) goes on til midnight or half midnight.

Anyway, bathroom was nice and in the end i slept well. And it was cheap!

“Potential to be excellent but overall, disappointing”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 24 July 2011

This is a lovely, historic coaching inn situated in a lovely village. The restaurant, bar and beer garden are all beautifully decorated and welcoming. However, the rooms are tired, in need of decorating and sadly lacking in the nice little touches that make a stay special. The bathrooms appear to be newly renovated with all fittings relatively modern in appearance but the complimentary toiletries were limited to one miniscule bottle of shampoo, ditto one of shower gel and a small bar of soap. The towels were thin and smelt musty and there was only half a toilet roll! The room itself needed redecorating. The carpets were so stained that I made sure I wore something on my feet at all times. The bedding seemed clean but the cushions were, again, old and didn't look clean. Breakfast was OK but the waitress seemed very busy and the food took ages to appear. The juice and toast etc was at one end of the room but there was not enough laid out for all the guests. All in all, a very disappointing stay at what could, with a little bit of effort and some paint and some carpet cleaner could be a smashing little hotel.

“Welcoming and comfortable”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 15 July 2011

Helpful staff. Room was comfortable although a bit worn - carpets and curtains were stained and duvet covers were clean but ripped! Sounds awful but it wasn't as the room was well appointed with everything we needed. No double glazing as it is a listed building, so quite a bit or road noise, particularly as we had windows open. Had dinner in evening - good menu and service was also good.

“Food - not so great :-(”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 29 June 2011

We were hoping for a nice relaxing dinner in a country style restaurant and it was very disappointing. We had black pudding to start with - ok - not so great with the bizarre sauce and then we followed up with Fish and Chips and Seafood squid ink linguini (!!).
Fish and chips smelled terribly – the oil should have been changed a long time ago and the mushy pea was canned. The linguini was in fact way overcooked tagiatelle with pieces of crab meat that was completely lost in the pile of black pasta. Presentation zero and taste close to it. Service was nice and attentive though. The place is reasonably priced – but still not worth the money for the quality of food.

“Don't stay here”

If you are a weary traveller, you are going to be more weary when you have checked out of this place. The noise from the bar and the loud thud of music into the early hours make this place on to avoid. If you have a car ,sleep in it in the car park, you are more likely to get a better night's sleep.
Totally unacceptable in this day and age. Really it is the village pub with a few bedrooms.
