“Enjoyed staying here”

I stayed here on purpose since I did NOT want to stay in Assisi itself. I didn't want to stay in a tightly squeezed medieval city with hotels in buildings several hundred years old, with small rooms and no parking. The spaciousness and modernity of the Portiuncula area in the valley below Assisi was just what I wanted. The hotel had ample free parking and I actually kept the car in the car park for several hours after I checked out; the staff doesn't really monitor who is parked there. There is a grocery store and several eating places all around the block. Bus rides are hourly up to Assisi but don't take a taxi (15 Euros one way!). The room I had was pleasant, with a large balcony, with a nice bathroom with toiletries. I liked having at least 1 English speaking channel (Sky) on TV, altho the news is repetitious. The Portiuncula church is a 1 minute walk away (a huge church built over a tiny church St Francis loved and it was here that he died). The staff was very attentive to my requests and one of them who was just about to go home offered to show me the way to a shop I was having trouble locating. But don't eat in the restaurant; too expensive! Breakfast was included and was very acceptable by Italian standards; I was asked what I wanted to drink and I got hot, strong coffee and a separate container of warm milk. The pastries were nice. The major highways are within minutes of the Portiuncula area and this hotel so you can be off to your next town in no time. Next trip to Assisi, I'm staying here.

“Terrible service”

Exercise extreme cautious when booking this property online. This hotel left an extremely unpleasant aftertaste on the last night of our honeymoon in Italy.

We first came across this hotel through Tripadvisor, and were attracted by the fact that they charged reasonable rates for a 4 star hotel, which made up for the fact that the hotel was actually located outside of Assisi. We booked 1 night directly on the hotel's website, paid through PayPal and received an online confirmation of our stay from the hotel.

However, when we turned up at the hotel after a long 6 hour drive from Venice, the reception staff informed us that they had made a mistake with the price quoted on the website. There were no apologies, and they were unable to explain why they didn't bother calling me on my local mobile number. We were flabbergasted but checked in nonetheless, figuring that we could sort it out with the manager the next morning.

When checking out the next morning, the manager refused to budge, despite the fact that we had paid in full and that the hotel had confirmed our reservation. When we tried to negotiate, the manager threatened to call the police!

Eventually a different reception staff person offered us a slight "discount" off their rack rates (the manager was still trying to call the police at this point!), but I was in for another surprise - they claimed that they had yet to receive any payment from PayPal, and were therefore unwilling to offset the "new" rate from the amount that we had already paid! We were essentially forced to pay again for a room which we had already paid in full.

If you decide to book this property, make sure that you CALL to confirm your rate and reservation!

We apologise for the delay, but it is with regret that we wish to report the insulting comments left by the client in the Review entitled "Terrible service"
Aug 7, 2006 domo, Sydney, Australia -

Firstly we would like to point out that the said client is not from Australia but Singapore. The booking concerned only one day and had been carried out through the online system with Pay Pal.

Our programmer, who had inserted a random price of € 10,00 per night for a double room with breakfast as a means of testing the system, had clearly forgotten to make the necessary corrections. Shortly afterwards the client completed the booking at the above listed conditions, for € 10,00 per night.

Given that the booking had been completed so quickly, we immediately emailed the client to signal that there had been a mistake, but received no reply. The confirmation quoted by the client is a default confirmation (sent in automatic by the system and not by the hotel staff). We would like to point out that the hotel staff immediately sent written notification to the client to warn of the misunderstanding.

Contrary to what the client wrote in the report, at the time of check-in the hotel staff immediately apologised for the mistake and informed the client of the going rates for that time of year, without receiving the slightest objection or refusal.

We would like to take this opportunity to remind the client, who claims to be a solicitor, that by Italian law diligence and good faith are pre-contractual requisites.

With regards to the amount credited by the Pay Pal system, we would like to highlight that this took place on 27.07.2006, the day after the client checked out.

In any case the sum of € 10,00 is so ridiculously small that one can only wonder how anyone could possibly imagine it to be applicable to a room in a four star hotel !!!

“Not the Best”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 18 July 2006

The hotel is not located in central Assisi but a 10 minute bus ride away in the suburb of Santa Maria d'Angelli. This did not bother me because the hotel was a short walk to the train and we took several day trips to other parts of Umbria. Also, the buses into to Assisi were frequent. However, if you want to be in central Assisi this might not be for you.

Our room was clean ( except for a stain on the comforter) and the bathroom was very nice ( hydro massage shower). However, it was very small and cramped with itchy sheets and an uncomfortable bed.

Our experience at breakfast was awful. There was no service whatsoever. The tables were dirty, there were no utensils, no one came over to ask if you wanted tea or coffee. The breakfast itself was quite lacking. There was little selection and the only available milk was powdered.

The staff had an indifferent attitude toward its' guests. When we complained about the lack of service at breakfast they barely acknowledged us.

All and all this hotel had more flaws that what is acceptablefor a 4 star property.

“Nice, but lacks character and atmosphere”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 28 June 2006

We only stayed for one night and found the hotel average: definitely lacking in some atmosphere and character. In retrospect, we should've stayed in Assisi itself. Santa Maria d'Angeli doesn't have an awful lot to offer. It's not far to drive to Assisi, but you'll need to take a bus or car and park outside the walls/gates of Assisi. The breakfast was average: plenty of cakes, but by that time we've already realized that Italy doesn't do 'bacon and eggs'! Staff were very friendly and helpful and our room was clean, spacious and comfortable. The free parking was a plus point as well. If you're looking for a view or a romantic setting, this is unfortunately not the hotel to choose, as it is in the town centre and surrounded by other buildings/shops. In summary: nice hotel, but if we would stay in as lovely a part of Italy as Umbria again, we would want to stay somewhere that offers a bit more atmosphere and character as the Dal Moro Gallery Hotel.

“Great value modern hotel!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 1 December 2005

We stayed at this hotel in July 2005.

LOCATION: Santa Maria D'Angeli. As stated by others not in Assisi but it is extremely easy to get to. Bus tickets (very cheap- 2 or 3 euros for a return fare) are sold at a shop literally opposite the hotel, and the bus stop is about 100 meters away if that. Buses are frequent. The last bus back from Assis was at about 11pm. Outside the hotel is the lovely Piazza Santa Maria D'Angeli with cafes, gelatarias etc. It is family friendly even though it seemed busy into the small hours! About 50 meters away is the lovely church of the same name.

The hotel is a 10-15 walk away from the railway station. We didn't know this and took a taxi costing 15 euro (for a journey of a couple of minutes!). If you don't have lots of heavy bags to carry it may be worth walking.

ROOM: The room was a reasonable size, very modern air-conditioned and clean. The only down side was a small leak in our bathroom (stemmed by a couple of towels). The hotel offered to move us, but the alternative room was much smaller with poorer views. The fault was eventually fixed after a couple of days. There was a TV with satellite. But no fridge/minibar.

HOTEL: Staff were friendly and helpful, helping us book our journey to our next location. The POOL however although it may look a good size on the internet is very small (about 6ft by 9ft) and was plagued with pigeons. As such we couldn't use it much. This may be down side if you go in the summer.

FOOD: Breakfast was lovely with a large amount of choice. We didn't eat dinner at the hotel but there are a couple of nice restuarants within walking distance which we ate at, eating the other times in Assisi.

I would definately recommend this hotel especially with the very reasonable cost.
