My wife and I chose this hotel based purely on viewing its website! We had a brilliant time. Opened in 2003/4, it is beautifully set out with spacious grounds containing three large swimming pools, a children’s pool and a spa pool (jacuzzi). There are plenty of sunbeds, large parasols, and many palms offering shade when the sun becomes too much! Across a narrow road from the pool area is a large expanse of beach (black lava sand of course – Santorini being a volcano!) for the exclusive use of hotel guests, again with plenty of sunbeds and fixed umbrellas. Towels for use at the pool or beach are available from reception and may be renewed every other day.
We arrived (by independent shuttle from the airport, booked on the internet in the UK) from which moment the staff at Santo Miramare looked after us superbly. The reception staff were extremely helpful with information about the island, bus services, taxis and hire vehicles, and any number of other things we needed to know to enhance our holiday. Our room was serviced every day, and always left spotless.
In the poolside restaurant a varied and plentiful self-service buffet breakfast was laid out along one wall, with tables inside and on a shaded verandah outside. The team there were very attentive, and quick to clear used crockery. They were especially good with the youngsters, and any older folk who maybe required extra assistance.
I had booked a junior suite – a rather grand description for our room – although it WAS spacious, with plenty of storage both for hanging garments and in terms of drawer space. We had a pair of twin beds placed next to each other, a desk with a chair, a settee, low table and an extra chair for relaxing in. Cotton bed linen was changed frequently, almost daily. The safe was simple to operate and a useful facility for storing passports cash and other valuables.
The bathroom was well equipped, with plenty of clean towels (also changed daily) and copious supplies (readily replenished) of shower/bath gel and shampoo. At the end of a hard day’s sunbathing there was always plenty of hot water– something Greece used to be notorious for not always providing! A powerful hairdryer was also provided.
The poolside bar, operated from 9am till after midnight, offering tea, coffee, cocktails, beer, soft drinks, and most times during the day, light meals and snacks, brought freshly prepared from the restaurant’s kitchen. Again, staff here were most attentive.
Internet access was available in reception, by purchasing a card for a set number of minutes’ use. We found the server a bit slow, but adequate for for occasionally checking or sending e-mails, and for checking in on-line before our flight home.
A (small) caveat! For a hotel of this calibre (it is rated 4*) I would have expected a small shop, offering quality merchandise, including items (clothing, mugs etc) carrying the hotel’s logo. The nearest ‘supermarket’ was a good stroll away and often travellers arrive having omitted to pack items such as shaving gel, toothpaste and so on). And it is surprising for a hotel not to provide its own car park, especially as there is land nearby which might be acquired for the purpose.
Room Tip: Most rooms look directly onto the pool area, but ours was on the highest level (of three) and had lo...
