We just returned from our 2nd stay at Jardin Del Mar in Bucerias, Mexico, and it is one of the most relaxing places we’ve ever visited (and we’ve been a lot of places throughout the U.S. and Mexico with beach and sun!). While the location is easy to get to (just 12 miles from the Puerto Vallarta airport), it’s worlds away. Walking through the huge wooden entrance doors, and gazing out through the gardens to the sparkling pool and sea, you can literally feel the stress slip away.
If you love long walks on the beach, doing yoga on a wonderful rooftop palapa, watching the sunrise and sunset over the bay, delicious meals eaten out or prepared in your own kitchen, the soothing and constant sound of the waves touching shore, watching the wide variety of seabirds, kayaking from shore, or just kicking back with a good book and a dip in the pool -- this is the place to go.
While it’s easy enough to call a taxi to whisk you into town, we usually choose to walk along the beach to either Bucerias (about 35 minutes) or the smaller town of La Cruz (about 20 minutes). The marina in La Cruz sells wonderful, fresh seafood which you can prepare at “home,” and we like to pick up other food supplies from the local market or small corner stores in either town. If you don’t feel like cooking, there’s an abundance of excellent restaurants to choose from.
The “casas” at Jardin del Mar are comfortable, wonderfully decorated with original folk art, and furnished with everything needed for a relaxing stay. The property has the feel of a small hacienda, with the gracious owners (Jim & Maria) happy to answer questions, call a taxi, help with planning day trips, or just chat. They thoughtfully stock the fridge with a few essentials – like homemade guacamole, salsa, chips, cerveza, fresh squeezed orange juice and more! The gardens and grounds are impeccably maintained, filled with surprises at every turn – whimsical creatures, colorful mosaics, Mexican antiques and artifacts. This truly is a little piece of paradise, and we are already making plans to return.
