“Wonderful in every way”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 24 February 2011

We spent three days around Christmas 2009 (period was unfortunately not available in the "Date of stay"-menu at tripadvisor.com) at Whare Kauhau and were absolutely blown away by the entire experience. The Lodge's setting in Pallisser bay is perfect, with on one side a view over the beautiful ocean with its ever changing colours and on the other side luscious green grass hills and rough mountains. On Christmas evening we witnessed one of the most stunning sunsets we have ever seen and will never forget.

The staff are very professional and heartwarmingly kind at the same time. I am afraid that I forgot their names - our stay was over a year ago - but will always remember how the sympathetic managers, the sommelier and his incredibly kind wife, the young chef who blew us away with his creativity and devotion and - I believe his name was Paul - the man who took us clay shooting, quad biking and touring around the property, how all of those wonderful people managed to surprise us time and time again by their anticipation to our needs and desires, their enthousiasm and their kindness

You will love this place. You can both relax and enjoy the beautiful scenery or do lots of activities, and when you get bored of your time on you own, a warm welcome awaits in the large dining building.

If you ever have the opportunity to go to Whare Kauhau, you would be a fool not to accept. We as a family love travelling to luxury lodges in dramatic settings and have seen some beautiful places, but Whare Kauhau took our hearts like no other place.

If you are willing to pay for it - this is a fantastic place. Far away from everything, a great place to relax. The staff is very friendly - a gorgeous lodge.

“Comfort, majesty, warm people, great food and wine, adventure - in short: everything!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 8 July 2010

Being avid travelers and having visited some of the top lodges, both fishing and luxury, in New Zealand multiple times, we found Wharekauhau Lodge to be the perfect representation of the Kiwi rural lifestyle, served up with attention and magnificence. We enjoy Wharekauhau so much that we have been insisting that friends join us for our stay on the property. With the range of activities available on the property, you can be as busy and active as you want; or the lodge can be a secluded zone of relaxation if that is what you prefer.

The Lodge and farm offer a perfect location that provides a serene feel with beach views and ocean surf, the South Island off on the horizon, the majestic Tararua Mountains in the background, and the green pastures dotted with sheep.

The level of professional hospitality service and attention to details provided by each staff member is like having your own personal concierge. Each one of the staff is most capable and happy to provide whatever you may require or request.

Dear Kahuna 5,
Thank you for the lovely posting about your stay on Trip Advisor. The view is truly spectacular now with the Kaikoras of the South Island covered in snow, and the pastures are soon to have more fluffy white inhabitants as we enter lambing season.
I am excited to share your comments with our team as it seems you have firmly grasped the idea of Wharekauhau. We truly appreciate your comments and look forward to having you back at Wharekauhau another day.
Until then,

“Specatcular! One would have to be bitter to be negative about Wharekauhau”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 7 July 2010

I was shocked to read about the misguided American that had a bad experience. This place is truly stunning. The staff are friendly and personable not stuck up or tacky, just real people in a fabulous place. The service is exemplary! I'll be back!

“stunning, stunning, stunning service”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 10 June 2010

As a restaurant manager in a former life, I have fairly high expectations when it comes to service. I was absolutely thrilled with the excellent service at Wharekauhau during our recent one-night stay. It is not often you find staff who can relate to guests on a number of levels, and who provide exactly what you need, before you even know you need it.

We received discreet privacy when it was needed, and chatty banter when it was appropriate. The food was fabulous, and wine list excellent. Staff were very knowledgeable about their products, and clearly had a passion for their work.

I was particularly impressed with the little touches - for example, on checking in & taking the tour, our luggage was taken to our room (as expected). What we didn't expect (but greatly appreciated) was our i-pod being taken out of our car and placed beside the i-pod speakers in our room. Fresh water bottles placed in the cup holders of our car for the journey home was a brilliant finishing touch.

We will definitely return to Wharekauhau. Yes, it is expensive, but you get what you pay for and everyone deserves a little bit of luxury now and then.
