My wife and I were looking for a quiet, romantic place to spend our 39th anniversary and stumbled on the Pelican Beach Hotel on North Caicos island. We were impressed by all the reviews we saw and the fact that the hotel was family-owned and operated. We were a little concerned about the logistics of getting to the island from Provo, but that turned out to be a non-problem (with some help and advice from Donna!).
Getting to North Caicos is fairly simple - there is a ferry that runs several times a day and takes about 30 minutes. Taxis on either end are readily available, but need to be arranged for in advance on North Caicos (the hotel arranged for our taxi). As on any island, the taxis are fairly expensive ($30 to the hotel from the dock - a few miles away), but the drivers that we had were pleasant and helpful.
The hotel was very much as advertised on their website- low key, quiet and perfectly situated on a beautiful white sand beach that stretched for miles. We felt very much at home right away when we were warmly greeted by Susan and later welcomed by her daughter Donna.
There were very few people on the beach and most of the time we had it ALL to ourselves! The view from our porch was amazing - watching (and listening to) the ocean from the lounge chair was completely relaxing.
The meals were absolutely wonderful - there were always 3 dinner selections that could be made and changed from day to day. Of course, the fresh seafood (grouper and lobster) were our favorites, but the other meals were equally well prepared and tasty. Breakfasts were made to order and included fresh fruit as well as the standard breakfast fare.
Our room was very roomy and comfortable and was kept spotless by our cleaning lady (and waitress!). There were a few minor items needing maintenance, but nothing to interfere with our enjoyment of the visit. As other reviews have said - if you are expecting a 5-star resort, this may not be the place you are looking for. If you are looking for a friendly, relaxing, laid back, "away from it all" place of fantastic natural beauty, you have found it!
The islands of North Caicos and Middle Caicos are virtually untouched by development, so there is not much to do as far as activities. There is a small grocery store within walking distance, but nothing else close by. There is a well-stocked wine and liquor store down the road a few miles if you have a car available. If you are expecting anything other than relaxing and enjoying the natural beauty of the island, then this may not be the place for you to visit! There are boats for hire for fishing and snorkelling, but they are very expensive. The hotel has cars for rent, and with a minimum stay, they will provide one for a day without charge.
By sure to take insect repellent - the "no-see'ums" are vicious! Although I did not have any reaction to their bites, my wife was covered with little red bumps that itched like crazy.
There was a slight downside to our visit - the impact of the downturn in the economy was very evident - half-finished buildings and even a completely abandoned "resort", but we never felt uncomfortable - just a sense of sorrow that there might have been some shattered dreams in those places.
All in all, we had a very pleasant, relaxing time enjoying this little piece of paradise and the warmth of our hosts. I hope that we can return at some time in the future.
