“Why all the good reviews?”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 10 February 2012 via mobile

I'm confused, I've read the other reviews and I don't get it!! My experience of the service was appalling and the staff had a feel of retired bored housewives that didn't want to admit they had to work. They all chatted while I waited ages to be served and they then forgot the whole order and had to 'check' again after another 14 mins of waiting. The whole place is dated and in need of redecoration. You can't take away the amazing views but it's stuck in a past time.

As readers will understand, it is very difficult for any customer service driven outlet to perform perfectly 100% of the time. Whilst we always aim for this goal there are unfortunately certain circumstances where we trip up.

Due to the nature of our hotel lounge and the due to the fact we do not take bookings in this room we sometimes experience very busy periods which can occasionally result in there being delays to the delivery of food and drinks.

In these situation, we have members of staff on standby throughout the hotel that we can call upon but it sometimes takes a little wait while the backlog of orders are processed. I can only assume this is what happened to the reviewer when he/she visited. We are constantly looking for ways to continually improve the customer service at the hotel to keep such instances to a minimum. When they do occur we always do out best to warn our customers if a wait is likely.

The reviewer mentions that the whole place is in need of redecoration. I completely disagree with this comment and do not understand how anyone who has visited the hotel could make this statement. The Owners have a continual programme of refurbishment in addition to employing several full time members of maintenance staff to keep the hotel looking in pristine condition. The hotel is renowned for it's impressive sweeping staircase in the lobby area and all of the furnishings in our Lounge Bar (where the reviewer visited) have been replaced within the last 2 to 3 years. Why not come and see for yourselves? - We offer some superb afternoon teas.

“Great Hotel in a Fab Location”

We visited the Grand Hotel for one night to meet up with friends. Having stayed before, we booked one of the sea view rooms as they have a fantastic view over the bay. We had booked a special rate by phone and this was all confirmed on arrival. No need for credit card on arrival as they only wanted it on departure. The room was clean and warm and the bed very comfortable and it had a lovely window seat.

The hotels is well located for access to the beach and the town centre. There is a bar to the rear with sport on the TV and the hotel lounge bar is very comfortable and warm with good service.

We did not have dinner in the hotel, but the breakfast had an excellent selection with main meals cooked to order. The service was very good.

This was a very enjoyable stay and I would recommend this hotel and we wished we had a second night. We will definitely be back in the future.

Room Tip: The Sea View rooms have superb views over the beach

It is extremely unusual for the hotel to receive any complaints with regards to absence of heating night and day.

This reviewer was incorrectly informed about our heating system switching off at 11pm each night. Instead our heating system should maintain a constant comfortable temperature throughout the night and it uses temperature sensors at the front and back of the hotel to do this.

On the night that this reviewer stayed it appears that a fault had occurred with one of these sensors. We have since made contact with and thanked this reviewer directly for bringing this issue to our attention and would like to assure the readers that this very unusual fault has now been rectified.

“excellent hotel, poor staff”

We only got there by chance, as our ferry to Amsterdam was cancelled ... and we quite liked it! Imposing facade, splendid location with beach view, impressing spiral staircase, cosy room (222) with four poster and phantastic view. Only let down: the clumsy, absolutely unprofessional young waitresses in the bar and in the restaurant that evening – as someone already wrote here: “some of the most disinterested service staff I have ever come across. I don't know where they managed to find such a ridiculous, incompetant bunch“. Otherwise, the food was amazingly good – and breakfast, too. A good base to explore the fascinating coast northwards, towards Holy Island!

Thank you for your review. Firstly, I am pleased that this guest enjoyed the majority of their stay.

It is a real shame that one or two members of staff have given the hotel a negative review on this occassion. All of our staff are trained to look after our guests, anticipate guest needs and where possible go out of their way to exceed expectations. It is therefore even more dissapointing to read this review.

I have to say that the vast majority of staff are extremely happy to be working at the Grand Hotel and work very hard to look after each guest who walks through our doors. The reviewer obviously raises some key training issues and we will of course use this feedback to improve the experience for future guests.

Something has clearly gone wrong in this instance - without knowing the name of the member of staff concerned it is difficulty to establish who exactly is at fault and for this reason we always request that if guests have an issue with any aspect of their stay, they inform during their stay so we can put things right at the time.

“Totally Tynemouth”

First ever visit to Tynemouth , and had relied on Trip Advisor reviews whwn choosing The Grand. Classic Victorian Style but completely refurbished.
Really excellent and comfortable sea-view bedroom with stunning views. Staff were extremely helpful, and we even got a complete guided tour of the Hotel from the Head Housekeeper, obviously very proud of the hotel standard and quality. Previous guest have included Dame Vera Lynn; Laurel and Hardy; Mike and Bernie Winters etc....and I can see why they chose The Grand. The car never moved for the 5 days we were there, and we walked on the beach every day. We will definitely be back!
