I'd checked a few reviews before booking this hotel and they were all fairly reasonable with the general feeling being 'it's good for the price', however after booking i kept finding more and more bad reviews for the hotel and became concerned that we were going to have a terrible holiday. I remember feeling so relieved when we saw the hotel and checked out our room (319). OK it's not the biggest room or the most well equipped i've ever seen but it was clean and tidy, and the bed was definitely wooden frame - we pulled up the mattress to check after hearing about concrete beds! (Not sure if they're only in certain rooms / floors).
The staff were really friendly and helpful, rooms clean and tidy and cleaned everyday we were there (tip: if you want your towels changing everyday leave them on the floor, if you're happy to use it again, hang it up or fold it up and they'll leave it).
Food was a bit samey, but was fine, there were about 3 different mains each meal time, usually with one of them being a greek dish - mousakka, kleftiko, etc. Very nice traditional Greek dishes but i can imagine fussier eaters (like my husband) would find it a little difficult as food wasn't labelled and sometimes you weren't sure exactly what you were eating.
We personally found the local alcohol very nice and considering we had quite a bit to drink while we were away we definitely got our moneys worth (paid around £200 for the hotel). The Germans seemed to enjoy the local alcohol too judging by the amount of it they drank!
For the first day or so we appeared to be one of only about 3 British couples at the hotel with the remainder being German. After that though more British holidaymakers arrived and we didn't feel quite so lost! Seems quite a lot of German tour operators use this hotel, so if you prefer being in an all British hotel this may not be the one for you. Everyone was still polite though, just meant you couldn't really chat to fellow guests!
The location isn't the best as the hotel is close to a main road (officially the speed limit was 50kmh on the stretch in front of the hotel, but some people did far more than this! If you're sensible and cross at the gap in the crash barriers to the left of the gates (about 30 yards away), then you get quite a good view of the road which makes it easier to cross safely. There is an excellent bar over the road (Rainbow Bar) which has free wi-fi so we went across a couple of times to take full advantage of that and the football and rugby being shown on the big screen (The hotel didn't show either). Also ate there on my birthday night as we fancied trying a local bar. Food was fantastic and drinks were reasonable (around 2 euro for a coke, around 3 euro for a beer. Really friendly staff too.
Local bus is handy and would recommend this if travelling into Heraklion (less than 4 euro) as it is very busy with traffic and people and parking could be tricky.
We hired a car for 2 days to visit Knossos amongst other places, we rented from Zak's which is just down the road from the Rainbow bar, found them helpful, car was in very good condition and cost around 60 euro fully insured (for a Fiat Panda) which we thought was ok. If you like to explore i would suggest a car as the buses don't really run to schedule and it can be a bit limited where they go to. Just keep your wits about you on the road as it's a bit of a free-for-all.
Overall, we enjoyed our holiday and would recommend the hotel. It is 3* Greek as someone else has mentioned below, so don't expect too much. There is so much to see in Crete anyway that you might not want to spend so much time at the hotel!
