The Highwayman Inn near Wells in Somerset, is run by Andy & Cath, who will give you just about the warmest welcome you could possibly get. The Inn is also very welcoming as are the locals, something you do not always see up and down the county.
I stayed in Room 7 just a few days before Christmas 2011, so the place was just lovely with all the Christmas decorations.
This Inn has everything you want, history, terrific food, several beers to choose from including live, draught and bottled, a terrific selection of wines that are all served from a long decorative bar.
You have a choice of eating in the bar area, or in the restaurant, both are very pleasant. They have pool table in a separate area, exceptionally clean facilities, and free ample parking.
I must tell you about my meal there, it was just spectacular, so much so I took photo for you all to see ! It is the 20 oz Rump Steak, which is just one of the dozen or so steaks to choose from. Those who wish to eat low fat food can try the Kangaroo or Ostrich steak meals, and there are good choices for vegetarians. There are about 6 starters to choose from, all the traditional and expected pub/bar foods, plus specials for OAP's and a large desert menu. I could go on, but I think you get the idea.
My room was very warm, the bed was perfect and the shower was powerful and hot. A nice TV in the room and complimentary tea & coffee. All in all, wonderful value for money ! considering the welcome I received, the quality of the evening meal, the great breakfast, nice beer, I just cannot wait to return.
If all places I had to stay in were like the Highwayman Inn with people like Andy and Cath there to welcome me, I would like my job ! .... This is a very rare jewel in Somerset's crown !
I recommend you stay here and have a great time like I did.
