“Highwayman Inn, easily the best place around.”

The Highwayman Inn near Wells in Somerset, is run by Andy & Cath, who will give you just about the warmest welcome you could possibly get. The Inn is also very welcoming as are the locals, something you do not always see up and down the county.
I stayed in Room 7 just a few days before Christmas 2011, so the place was just lovely with all the Christmas decorations.
This Inn has everything you want, history, terrific food, several beers to choose from including live, draught and bottled, a terrific selection of wines that are all served from a long decorative bar.
You have a choice of eating in the bar area, or in the restaurant, both are very pleasant. They have pool table in a separate area, exceptionally clean facilities, and free ample parking.
I must tell you about my meal there, it was just spectacular, so much so I took photo for you all to see ! It is the 20 oz Rump Steak, which is just one of the dozen or so steaks to choose from. Those who wish to eat low fat food can try the Kangaroo or Ostrich steak meals, and there are good choices for vegetarians. There are about 6 starters to choose from, all the traditional and expected pub/bar foods, plus specials for OAP's and a large desert menu. I could go on, but I think you get the idea.
My room was very warm, the bed was perfect and the shower was powerful and hot. A nice TV in the room and complimentary tea & coffee. All in all, wonderful value for money ! considering the welcome I received, the quality of the evening meal, the great breakfast, nice beer, I just cannot wait to return.
If all places I had to stay in were like the Highwayman Inn with people like Andy and Cath there to welcome me, I would like my job ! .... This is a very rare jewel in Somerset's crown !
I recommend you stay here and have a great time like I did.

Richard Kaminski.

“Worst hotel in Somerset”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 31 October 2011

If I could rate this below poor then I would every time. A truly awful hotel. Cheap and nasty food but not at cheap prices served by ignorant staff who wouldn't know a happy face if it jumped up and bit them. The rooms are tiny and tired looking. The managers laugh in your face if you even comment on anything. No point trying yo improve things during your stay. They are not interested. The bed in our room needed replacing. There was only a small high up window and no wardrobe. Not enough room to swing a mouse let alone a cat. The car park is an unlit waste ground so not good in the dark. The bar is odd and the set up at breakfast bizarre. The food was supermarket saver value. No fantastic local food to enjoy. Just plastic looking reheated junk. Try anywhere rather than here. It is truly awful and should be shut down and the staff sacked and never allowed to work at a hotel again

“Worst nights sleep in years”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 19 September 2011

We stayed here as we had travelled from London to go to a friends wedding nearby. Walking in to the main bar area/ reception, there was an overwhelming odour of fried food. The twin room we had was on the ground floor of the hotel. It was quite dark and dingy. The bin had not been emptied since the previous guests had left, and the toilet was not clean. The bottom sheets on the beds were not big enough for the mattresses - they didn't even reach the edge! The room was full of spiders - there was a pod of about 20 baby spiders above my bed, so obviously no dusting or cobweb-removing had taken place for some time. Hanging baskets on the front of the building were hanging above our windows, and water was pouring out of them all night long, hammering against the windows as if there was a rain storm outside. Breakfast was ok - instant coffee, a grey sausage, but ok apart from that.
All in all the worst nights sleep I have had in a long time.

“Gone downhill fast”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 16 September 2011

I have stayed here on a few occasions (not through choice) and each time the size of the room has been a bit of an issue, and the lack of choice at breakfast has been disappointing but overall the place wasn't too bad. After a gap of 2 years we were back again and this time the tray in the room wasn't so well stocked - I don't drink tea and coffee so the comp water that was supplied before was always welcome. The room was above the bar area where there was a live singer until past 11.30pm so no early night possible. The whole place is looking shabbier than ever and needs a refit fast. The dinner menu was very trimmed back and the lasagne I had was totally dry and tasted old and reheated. But the worst part was that the shower in the room only worked at a temperature you could stand under if you used it just before bed. In the morning the water was so hot you couldn't stand beneath it. The staff were aggressive and unpleasant when I mentioned it on day 1 and more so on day 2. No change of room was offered despite me asking and I was left to feel that I had done something wrong in expecting the facilities on offer to work. Don't be tempted by the website, this place needs avoiding unless the staff and management are changed and it has an upgrade.

Room Tip: Rooms are the front are bigger but are over the bar so noisy, rooms at the back are terrible.

“Good for what I needed”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 6 September 2011

I stayed here whilst attending an event at the Bath and West Showground for business.

I haven't stayed in many B&Bs (I'm more of a hostel girl if I'm forking out for accommodation) so this was quite luxurious for me! The room was a little on the small side, but perfectly adequate when all you really need is a bed and a shower. The bed was comfy and the shower was excellent - very powerful and no shortage of hot water. There was also a new flatscreen TV.

Breakfast was lovely; hot and fresh full English (bacon, sausage, hash brown, beans, egg, mushroom, tomato.)

My only comments would be:
1) Two towels per person were provided but it would be helpful to have an additional hand towel for the bathroom. I was sharing the room with a female colleague and we both needed a towel to dry our hair.
2) It would've been nice to have clean tea cups each day.
3) The windows didn't open particulary far which was OK as it wasn't too hot when we were there, but if it was a warm evening, it would probably be quite stuffy. The bathroom window didn#'t open at all, although there were an efficient extractor fan.

Room Tip: Ask for Room 7 or above - these are in the adjoining annexe and away from the bar which can be noisy...
