“What a shame for our expensive honeymoonstay!”

We stayed at this hotel in July this year for the beginning of our honeymoon.

The hotel and restaurant was selected by us to celebrate our first two days of marriage.
I would like to say that overall our stay was pleasant, and the food was very good.

Unfortunately, there were a few instances where the level of service let the restaurant and the hotel down completely. Most importantly, we were really let down by this.
The whole idea of us staying at this hotel was for us to begin our honeymoon in luxury, and be completely pampered.

Firstly, on the morning after our first night, we requested that our room was tidied, but to leave the towels, as they had hardly been used.
On our return to the bedroom, no cleaning had been done whatsoever.
Having discovered this we enquired at reception to see if our room could be cleaned.
We were told that was not possible, since the cleaners had all left.

This surprised us considering the standards this hotel holds , and for the service that we paid for.
It is our experience that hotels of this standard would normally have met our request.

We were disappointed at this.

Our second complaint is in respect to the service we received on the Sunday night for our 10 course banquet, which was specifically made to celebrate our wedding.
The service was not of the standard expected of a Michelin star restaurant, and staff was more interested in the football final than serving their guests.

We were made to feel uncomfortable, due to confusion over wines, we were practically told off for pouring a second glass of wine, this was because we were waiting, and decided to help ourselves.

This is a disgrace for any restaurant, let alone a Michelin star one.
My husband had to get up, to walk to the bottle cooler, to get us some water.

No staff were around at all for the majority of our meal.

Through out the whole evening we felt the staff was inside watching the television, instead of attending to their customers.

The sommelier came briefly to our table, and we really had no idea as to why he bothered, since he did not bring anything more on the wines then the waiter had already informed us on.
The sommelier was nowhere to be seen the whole evening after this brief encounter. Apart from when we left the restaurant, and he was stood at the bar.

We spent a lot of Euro's for this meal for it to be perfect, and expected nothing less. Unfortunately the service was abysmal.
What I found really horrible was the fact that I specifically asked whether the foie gras was forced fed, and I was almost patronised.

He could assure me that it came from a retailers, and was not forced fed.

On top if this I was told by the waiter that they hardly use this technique any more, and I told him that this technique is up to this day still the most common one…(really it is almost the only way) I know this for a fact.

But when he was so convinced about the foie gras from the retailers not being a forced fed one, I believed him, and ate it.

Presuming the retailors must sell a faux gras (free ranged, none forced fed goose liver, mixed with their fat, and I don't mean the vegetarian version which also exists), as well as foie gras.
I should have been less naive, and trusted my own instinct.
Because I have now eaten a product I really did not want to eat.

And this in a Michelin star restaurant!!

It is a dreadful shame that the Chef’s and kitchen staff, are let down so much by the dining service.
We do want to point out that the food itself was excellent and superbly produced by the kitchen. Our gratitude and thanks should be passed to them as they did an excellent job.

The night staff at reception was fantastic, and the ladies who helped with our reservation were really great. Thanks to their nice , and personal approach, we decided to stay at the Wiemsel, and not at a hotel in Lattrop in the first place.

During our honeymoon we also stayed at a hotel in Boulogne Sur Mer, that also had a Michelin star restaurant. Here the sommelier was outstanding, and the table service was brilliant.

This is what we were hoping for on our first two days of marriage at hotel De Wiemsel.

We will always remember the Wiemsel as nice, but not excellent, which it should have been for the 421 Euros for the meal and the 1051 Euros we paid for the hotel!!!

We also felt that plastic flowers on the dining table looked rather cheap, when real flowers do make that difference or, nothing at all.

When I wrote a similar letter to the manager, I got a very unsatifying reply, and this has led me to warn other guests for being aware of this hotel.

We were at least expecting a better response from them, but even that they did not manage.

What a shame for such an expensive place.
We will never return here.
