“Very disappointing - great location cannot compensate for hostel's shabbiness and uncleanliness”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 11 November 2010

We were sent here after booking a room for 5 days through OK Hostal, which appears to be a management agency for a chain of hotels/hostels on Ibiza.

Firstly, we were dropped off by our transfer coach at Hostal Torres (which shares the same address as OK Hostal), only to be given very poor directions to Catalina Aptos. Hotel (which, by the way is a hostel NOT a hotel), which took us about an hour to walk to/find - not acceptable at 3am when you are tired and want to go to sleep.

Secondly, whilst the service itself at the hostel was reasonable, the first room we were given, # 404, was small and dirty, several of the lights did not work, and the air conditioning leaked, which incidentally did so on to my brand new holdall. The night porter's answer to this was to just switch it off!

Requesting another room, we were given # 403, which was larger and had an excellent view over San Antonio bay, but was also dirty (especially the floors and the bath/wash hand basin/toilet), had a very small balcony, and periodically had a strong smell of sewage from the bathroom. The TV also did not work, the shower was too hot, and the cistern was constantly running. The hostel itself is generally shabby and uncared for with lots of litter lying around and most of the fixtures, fittings, and furniture either damaged or in various states of disrepair. It also attracts a certain type of clientele who are noisy and rowdy at all hours of the day.

The only positive comment I can make about this hostel is about its location, which is virtually on the sea front, just behind Savannah Beach Club and a few seconds walk from Cafe Mambo and Cafe Del Mar, and a few minutes’ walk to the West End etc. in one direction and Bar Kanya in the other.

Although we did not suffer any theft from our room as many other travellers have, we would never stay at this hostel again and would not only not recommend it to anyone, we would encourage others not to stay here as there are dozens of much better hotels/hostels on Ibiza offering much better value for money.

Please also note that the photos of the 'bar' on Trip Advisor are of Savannah Beach Club, not the bar of Catalina as it doesn't have one!

“cheap and cheerful and very good for watching the sunset”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 20 September 2010

iv just come back from the catalina and after reading some of the reviews on here i was a bit worried about staying there but when i got there everything was fine, its located right by savannahs which is one of the sunset bars so you will get the best views from the sunset within just a few seconds walk, then only a 5 min walk to the west end and the beach just a bit further, the rooms are basic but the cleaners came everyday to give new towels, and also we had view over the sea which we didnt pay for just asked if any were available when we checked in, altho if you really want a sea view in peak time probably best to pay the extra at time of booking. we had aircon in our room which if you want the option to turn on and off you pay 20 euro for the remote and then you get your money back when you check out, the only downside was that ours was leaking water in which we made the staff aware of, the staff there were really friendly and if you need someone to keep your luggage when you check out then they have a room to keep it. Regarding the reviews mentioning robberies we didnt get robbed and no one that we spoke to did either there are safes there you can lock your stuff in or like we did lock important stuff in cases and hide stuff best you can. there isnt a pool at these apartments so i wouldnt recommend to those who like to use the swimming pools but to anyone else who wants a good location and somewhere cheap to stay i definatly recommend it.

“Ok, but wouldn't choose to stay here again”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 2 August 2010

The hotel was ok as long as you don't expect much. I wouldn't stay here if I were planning to spend a lot of time in the hotel. There were 20 of us staying here and not one of us had problems with burglaries. We didn't have any problems with our room, the aircon worked and the shower worked although other people in our party had problems with the aircon, shower or toilet not working properly or at all in some cases! The only thing I really didn't like about the hotel was the fact that all the water that runs through it is salt water, so you have to shower in salt water which isn't great. Do not lock the bathroom door, it's quite tricky to get back out if you do.
The hotel is in a good area, but if you want a nice beach nearby stay somewhere else on the island.

“Not So Bad.”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 25 July 2010

After reading most of the reviews on here, my friends and I were understandably worried about burglaries, but I have to say, after losing a suitcase in an airport and each of us being pickpocketed of phones, purses, cameras and passports in a club, this hotel seemed like the safest place to be!

Location: The location for San Antonio is awesome, you can watch the beautiful sunset on the rocks which are about a 30 sec walk (or from your room if you have a seaview room) and easily stroll down into the West End/Taxi rank within about 5mins. There's a range of cafes to restaurants, and also newsagents and phones.

Rooms: We had a 4person studio, 3 beds and one pull out bed. At first the pull out bed meant we had very little floor space, but after a quick shift around of the furniture (wardrobe is massive, we stored chairs and a cabinet in there) it was fine. For the first 2 nights for some reason we had air-con (you have to pay for it, and we had not) which was lovely, but after that it turned off, and being on a budget we didn't pay for it- mistake! Those rooms burn up! I think it's 100euros per room for aircon for a week, and I would defnitely reccomend doing this. Cleaners did come in and provide toilet roll, and changed the sheets a couple of times, always leave your towels on the bathroom floor and they will change them. We hired a safety deposit box whcih we used for a couple of days, however we got the key pickpocketed (in Eden), the safe had to be drilled open and no spare key was made, but I have to say that in 5 nights of putting stuff in there without locking not one thing got stolen! The only hiccup we had with our room was that i got locked in the bathroom for about 45 minutes, we had to get a handyman to come and bash the lock off of the door! apparently it happens all the time, so just don't lock the doors!

Staff: Overall i found the staff were ok, a couple of them were extremely helpful, others not so much, but when we were dealing with lost luggage they let us use their phone and internet free of charge, and also fully refunded us without issue as we asked for a sea view room and did not get one.

Hope this review helps set some minds at ease! It may have just been because we were so unlucky in every other aspect of the holiday that the hotel seemed like a breeze, but really I didn't have any complaints, just be sensible, request a room that's not on the ground floor, hire a safe, and never leave the keys at reception, keep them on you and you should be fine!

Any questions please message me, will be happy to help!

x

“should be shut down! avoid like the plague!”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 13 July 2010

I just got back yesterday from this sorry excuse for a hotel and is quite easily the worst place i have ever stayed.

My room was robbed whilst i was on a night out and i am certain it was an inside job as there was no sign of forced entry to the room, they were even kind enough to lock the door on their way out!! The fire escape was being held open with a brick and the security camera(which i doubt worked anyway) had been pushed down to look at the floor. The night porter is an absolute joke(the staff during the day are no better), I was there for 2weeks there were plenty of nights we would return and he would be asleep in the waiting area just up the stairs from reception! When i told him i had been robbed he shrugged his shoulders and said "oh there is nothing i can do about it!" he wouldnt even call the police/take a report of what happend! There was also another burgulary that night on the ground floor and the lad had 300euros stolen and he was going home in a few hours, and then 2days later some lads who moved next door to us had their room compleatly ransacked and they took everything BUT a suitcase!(quite ironic!) You could also go to reception and get a key to any room without being challenged!!

Our friends were staying across the hall and the middle their balcony doors(3glass sliders) could be opend when they had been locked, we only found this out on one of the last nights though so be aware of that.

The shower was just salt water (the water also went off about 9.30-10pm most nights for around 30mins), the cistern in toilet wouldnt fill up again for about half an hour or more at times, ours stopped working compleatly a fair few times aswell, the extractor fan was hanging off the wall in the "kitchen" area and didnt work, the fridge door wouldnt stay shut, bedsheets were dirty and the top cover was a curtain!, had to ask for towels to be replaced.

The only good thing about the place was our view from our balcony(403) but again there is a downside as the balcony was so small you could only stand up, could only just fit a chair on there.

All in all as the title says it "should be shut down! and avoid like the plague!" gh
