We read reviews from people in advance and having experienced the hotel, we can only wonder what some people expect when they go away.
The hotel was spotlessly clean in every area - I spent many years in hospitality, so went looking: no complaints. Maids and cleaners were in general evidence, and busy, at all hours.
Food was routinely fresh, varied, tasty, inventive and well stocked; with great local produce - fish and vegetable dishes.
Staff were plentiful in number; always happy to help; always available.
The entertainers were a magnificent troupe - present throughout the hotel from breakfast to late at night; co-ordinating and presenting a mix of their own (mainly) and professional shows. They were also seen helping guests with luggage; chatting round the pool to people; and daily running fitness classes; in-pool activities; and poolside games and quizzes. The balance between invitation / availability, and OTT was spot on.
It is true that (literally) 99% of the guests were French and elderly - but this is only a problem if you let it become one (as some reviewers seem to have). We accepted the hotel therefore had to cater to this market, so fine.
DON'T be put off by your arrival. The hotel is VERY near a very busy dual carriageway. But - amazingly - once inside the hotel area, you would never know it and we'd forgotten within an hour.
10 minute walk to the beach, which has a lengthy and very clean strip of wide walkway; random exercise kit for anyone to hop on; and a selection of bars and restaurants. The walk there and back is pleasant enough, taking you - in part - through some lovely streets and areas.
The one negative we had - we let it wash over - has nothing to do with the hotel, but the French guests. There was no malice, but they appeared consistently - culturally, we believed - to be rude, boorish; with no sense of queueing and happy to barge in...........and don't ask them if the chair at their table's free, you just get a filthy look. This wouldn't be an issue if it wasn't all-pervasive, but they appeared - as a group - to have a rude mob mentality. This behaviour was confirmed by a young solo English male there on a brief stay: he said he works throughout Europe, across several French-speaking countries, and this behaviour is the norm.
BUT..............DON'T be put off going here by that. Ignore them and, believe me, they'll ignore you.
Small; charming; clean; quaint - we'd recommend it
Room Tip: we asked for a pool room, with a view. we were given a courtyard view room - which we far preferred...
