Stayed with my girfriend at Caramulo Hotel and we found it surprisingly above average and excellent value for money. Very good sport facilities (indoor swimming pool, squash, gymnasium) - full equiped and very well integrated. Exterior swimming pool is good, although not very spacious, with adequate catering service. Room have EXCELLENT view (must order a "Vale" view room. I agree furniture is a bit old fashioned, although it is not shocking: rooms are very spacious (huge bed) and bathrooms are new. Great architeture (see picture). Service is very nice and whole Hotel is very clean. Good SPA, with superb facilities and competent massages. Have dinner at "3 PIPOS" (at Tonda), 20 km away: definitively worth the trip (ask for "bacalhau and polvo à lagareiro") for 15 Euro/pax.

We stayed in Caramulo for 1 night during July'05.Caramulo hotel is a huge hotel situated in the Caramulo mountains.It has a spa,heated pool,jacuzzi,outdoor pool and beautifull views over the surrounding area.Caramulo is a centre for hiking and other outdoor activities such as rockclimbing etc.The hotel is a little run down and needs a bit of loving attention.It seems to be occupied mostly by groups of young people on hiking trips.Our bedroom was horrible-overlooking the carpark and with shabbly furniture.When I complained(they presume to be a 4star hotel),they moved us to a front suite which was much better.It had 2 bedrooms,huge entrance hall with closets,huge balcony with lovely views,nice bathroom and all the other 4star conveniences-but the decor was really very garish!!Scottish tartan carpets with aqua marine and maroon walls.We had a meal at the restaurant-huge portions and very tasty,but a bit expensive 15-20 euros per dish.Mostly O.K. hotel for a stop-over
