“Forgotten Beauty of the South Coast”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 23 June 2010

As a child I used to spend many holidays in Montenegro with my parents. After 20 years I came back and rediscovered the beautifull beaches of Ulcinj. Walking, culture, sunbathing, gastronomy, you it have all in one place. Whether you meet them on the street, restaurants or at the hotel, people are very friendly. The old town and its view are amazing. The oriental touch of a small town in combination with the sun and the sea was just what I needed.

The clean sand beaches, sun, cosy little town and excellent hotel services will definitely take me back to the South Mediteranian Coast at least one more time this year.

“Great Location & Views, Clean and Good Service”

The hotel is a little difficult to find even though it is located in the heart of the city. Check-in was quick and friendly although getting to the rooms is a bit of a challenge especially if you have heavy bags. I sweetened the bellhop's tip for the extra trip and effort.
My room was large and suite-like. There were a two sleeping rooms with a bathroom and large closets in between them. The rooms were clean and appeared to be recently renovated. The balcony was large with the amazing views overlooking the Adriatic, Old town, and the entire city.

The food was good but I passed on dessert. There happened to be a wedding the night I arrived and boy, did those folks know how to have a good time. There must have been over 600 people at the event and the music didnt stop until around 1PM.

Overall, I think this hotel is a very good find and offers good value. The town is a must see and my only regret is that I only stayed two nights.

“Ulcinj Worthy of am Off the Beaten Path Visit”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 11 October 2009

Once upon a time in the last century a black man, then in his late 50s or 60s, ran a photographic service on the beach situated in Ulcinj town. There are stories about black people in the town, both as slaves and as freemen. I suppose the black photog has passed away, but he had a son who was an exceptional basketball player and also a daughter if I recall correctly.
when I visited the town it was rather grungy, but inexpensive with hospitality industry folks a lot friendlier and nicer than those we ran across in Dubrovnik or (then) Titograd. The Hotel Mediterran was clean and comfy, if a little overpriced for what it offered. A major clientelle was Germans, many reportedly drawn by the sans clothing atmosphere of Ada Island. There were more than a few American cars in town during our brief stay. Some said the vehicles belonged to local folks - most Albanian ethnics - who had emigrated to the US, made something of a fortune, and brought the cars with them when the came back to Monenegro for a holiday.

“Not a place for nightlife or meeting people”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 10 July 2009

The hotel itself was fine but you could feel the soviet style architecture all over it. Pool was nice enough but they insisted in playing the most terrible music all day, even if we were the only ones there, which we mostly were. Place seemed deserted and the food at breakfast unedible.

I think that they tried really hard and the front desk staff were all reallt nice - they just didn't seem to know much better about quality.

“We Prefer Off Season!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 27 October 2008

My husband Charles and I enjoy visiting new places, especially during off season when we can avoid crowds. This was our follow the Roman's "road trip" - we visited three fortress cities in Montenegro's South Coast - Stari (old) Bar, Rozafa Castle, and Stari Grad in Ulcinj. Really fun although it helped that we knew the region's history before coming.

We stayed at the Hotel Mediteran in Ulcinj since since it was roughly in the middle of our History Channel field trip :) and it allowed us to drive along Skadar Lake between Bar and Rozafa, which is incredible like Loch Ness incredible.

Hotel Mediteran was our respite after each day. They have a nice large pool overlooking the the old fortress (Stari Grad) and the sunsets were great. The staff was helpful in finding us restaurants at night, and on a couple evenings we even had some Albanian singers.

Our room was comfortable and the housekeeping staff was helpful with special requests, like a quick ironing board for my husband's shirts, and extra towels for the pool.

The General Manager, Seljaton, they call him Selo, had fun presenting us with several bottles of fresh goat milk one morning at breakfast. His family has a goat herd and dairy operation in Ulcinj and I think he as fun making special presents to tourists.

My only suggest would be to do your homework before going to the South Coast. Montenegro has a lot do in Ulcinj and surrounding area but you have to look for it. On our next trip, we're going to do the hiking route above Bar and rent some bikes to pedal around Skadar Lake.

We'd recommend Hotel Mediteran for sure, and Ulcinj is a nice place for the end of the day.

  • Liked — Was right next to the city's restaurants and things to do at night
  • Disliked — A slightly larger bathroom would be nice
