My husband Charles and I enjoy visiting new places, especially during off season when we can avoid crowds. This was our follow the Roman's "road trip" - we visited three fortress cities in Montenegro's South Coast - Stari (old) Bar, Rozafa Castle, and Stari Grad in Ulcinj. Really fun although it helped that we knew the region's history before coming.
We stayed at the Hotel Mediteran in Ulcinj since since it was roughly in the middle of our History Channel field trip :) and it allowed us to drive along Skadar Lake between Bar and Rozafa, which is incredible like Loch Ness incredible.
Hotel Mediteran was our respite after each day. They have a nice large pool overlooking the the old fortress (Stari Grad) and the sunsets were great. The staff was helpful in finding us restaurants at night, and on a couple evenings we even had some Albanian singers.
Our room was comfortable and the housekeeping staff was helpful with special requests, like a quick ironing board for my husband's shirts, and extra towels for the pool.
The General Manager, Seljaton, they call him Selo, had fun presenting us with several bottles of fresh goat milk one morning at breakfast. His family has a goat herd and dairy operation in Ulcinj and I think he as fun making special presents to tourists.
My only suggest would be to do your homework before going to the South Coast. Montenegro has a lot do in Ulcinj and surrounding area but you have to look for it. On our next trip, we're going to do the hiking route above Bar and rent some bikes to pedal around Skadar Lake.
We'd recommend Hotel Mediteran for sure, and Ulcinj is a nice place for the end of the day.
