The hotel photos make it look like a peaceful haven in the midst of lush Italian gardens, conveniently ignoring the industrial zone overlooking it. We booked it because we really wanted to have access to a swimming pool during our stay in Verona for the opera festival.
The rooms
The "deluxe room" we were given smelt of damp, was narrow and worn. Depressed by our surroundings on what was an expensive holiday, we asked to move to a different room. The receptionist would not offer us an alternative, so we asked one of her colleagues the next day. We moved to the annex, which was a much bigger room but highly unexcptional, and with shared terrace overlooking...the industrial zone.
The swimming pool
The swimming pool is part of a country club so is shared by the hotel and the country club members. At the weekend it can get very crowded. To the right is the industrial zone. The newly refurbished health club, which was closed, was quite stunning but would not make up for the disappointment of the hotel.
The breakfast
The ham and cheese provided were cheap lunch pack junk. The cakes were dry. The juices were concentrates and water.
It's the kind of hotel you go for team building work exercises, and in fact that's what it is used for. It is not a peaceful Italian villa, but a run-down disaster that will make its money from uninformed tourists (like ourselves) and discounted corporate events rather than repeat custom.
Total cost, including small rental car, hotel, flight from London and opera tickets for 2 for one week in July - £2,000 (booked on Expedia). Be warned!
