As a couple we spent 3 days at the Acaya Golf Hotel in mid October 2004, we were the only guests in this 91 bedroom hotel. To say it was peaceful would be an understatement.
We had a great time though - well attended by a full compliment of staff (about 6 staff members to each of us).
The hotel is like a cream coloured moorish palace in the middle of a plain of lawns, gardens and the golf course. It is about 10 miles from the regional capital and attractive town of Lecce and about a mile from the coast. Access to a car is essential.
The location is in a popular holiday area for Italians which means it is very busy in the holidays but virtually deserted at other times of the year - four lane roads but no other vehicles, in October.
The rooms are modern, spacious, and well equiped, although we would have appreciated a kettle and tea and coffee as well as the minibar etc. Bathrooms are also well equiped with high quality toiletries and have baths with shower over.
The breakfast buffet, even for the two of us, was extensive with lots of fresh fruit, croissants and pastries. We didn't eat in the hotel in the evening - giving the chefs the night off!
Although not golfers, we would describe the golf course as a links course and probably best appreciated in the cooler months or parts of the day. There would be no problem in tee times - we only saw one person play the course in three days.
The only difficulty is finding the hotel. Although it has signs from Lecce the direction arrows don't show up well in the dark. Hint: In Lecce follow signs for the Hotel Crystal until you can pick up the signs for the San Cataldo road, then follow signs to San Cataldo until you see a sign to Acaya.
We certainly intend to go back.
