We stayed at the Alpenhof for 5 days over Christmas. We booked half board as we did not want to be looking for restaurants over the Christamas period. Good choice: the food was superb, like going out for a gourmet meal every evening. A cross between table d'hote and a la carte: no choice of first and dessert courses, but a choice of main. Not for vegetarians, but beautifully cooked and presented food. They provided an English translation of the menu each day and a "what's on, weather report" etc folder each morning at breakfast. Breakfasts were also lovely: masses of choice, what you would expect, but prawns and salmon maybe a bit unusual, home made preserves and a wonderful variety of bread.
Quiet - few guests at this period - and we had no car, which would be useful as the hotel is 30 minutes walk from Bayrischzell. We walked there and back along a lovely path away from the road, but we like walking.
The hotel is beautifully decorated, has an indoor pool, sauna etc which is exquisite and being sometimes on our own there it felt as if we were in our own mansion. A fitness centre and beauty parlour which we did not use. In the season a free ski bus which stops outside the hotel runs frequently up to the ski slopes (we went to watch and drink in the views of the Alps - and some gluhwein too) and the train to/from Munich stops about half a mile (max) away. Runs every hour, even on Christmas day. You can also walk the short distance to the Wendelstein cable car - see image from the top.
The staff were friendly, attentive and helpful. We were lucky with fresh snow - lovely dry snow you can walk in all day and not get wet - on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. The surrounding mountains were magical. Schliersee down the valley - a few stops by train - is a very picturesque town, well worth a visit.
A note about getting there by train. Remember to get off at Osterhofen. We forgot and went to Bayrischzell, the end of the line. After 6pm, no taxis around, but the local butcher, when we asked about a taxi, said, wait a few moments while I close and I will take you. We are used to such friendliness in the Middle East, not so much in Europe.
We do not regret missing out on our first choice - Mittenwald - as this area is unspoilt and the hotel a gem.
