“great Bavarian hotel”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 12 May 2011

We stayed at this hotel last night; we wish we could have stayed longer. It’s a beautiful hidden gem, near Wendelstein Mountain. Staff were efficient and welcoming; accommodating all our needs with a smile (including complementary late check out so we can indulge in their spa before we head to Munich airport for our long late night flight). Few types of rooms, we were in the Superior Room with a balcony. Reasonable priced with internet connection free of charge. Parking outside the hotel was free and secured. The restaurant is serving gourmet meals, small portions, pretty expensive! Breakfast cost 15 euro! The spa was of a good standard with nice size swimming pool and dry and wet saunas (only had to remind the receptionist to turn on the saunas; which meant half an hour wait till it was hot enough to enter).
Overall, it was great experience. Warmly recommended!

“Peace with superb food”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 16 January 2011

We stayed at the Alpenhof for 5 days over Christmas. We booked half board as we did not want to be looking for restaurants over the Christamas period. Good choice: the food was superb, like going out for a gourmet meal every evening. A cross between table d'hote and a la carte: no choice of first and dessert courses, but a choice of main. Not for vegetarians, but beautifully cooked and presented food. They provided an English translation of the menu each day and a "what's on, weather report" etc folder each morning at breakfast. Breakfasts were also lovely: masses of choice, what you would expect, but prawns and salmon maybe a bit unusual, home made preserves and a wonderful variety of bread.
Quiet - few guests at this period - and we had no car, which would be useful as the hotel is 30 minutes walk from Bayrischzell. We walked there and back along a lovely path away from the road, but we like walking.
The hotel is beautifully decorated, has an indoor pool, sauna etc which is exquisite and being sometimes on our own there it felt as if we were in our own mansion. A fitness centre and beauty parlour which we did not use. In the season a free ski bus which stops outside the hotel runs frequently up to the ski slopes (we went to watch and drink in the views of the Alps - and some gluhwein too) and the train to/from Munich stops about half a mile (max) away. Runs every hour, even on Christmas day. You can also walk the short distance to the Wendelstein cable car - see image from the top.
The staff were friendly, attentive and helpful. We were lucky with fresh snow - lovely dry snow you can walk in all day and not get wet - on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. The surrounding mountains were magical. Schliersee down the valley - a few stops by train - is a very picturesque town, well worth a visit.
A note about getting there by train. Remember to get off at Osterhofen. We forgot and went to Bayrischzell, the end of the line. After 6pm, no taxis around, but the local butcher, when we asked about a taxi, said, wait a few moments while I close and I will take you. We are used to such friendliness in the Middle East, not so much in Europe.
We do not regret missing out on our first choice - Mittenwald - as this area is unspoilt and the hotel a gem.

“Look forward to returning!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 4 July 2009

I chose Der Alpenhof due to its location on a route I was traveling from France to Austria, and stayed 2 nights here to break up the drive. I found out about Der Alpebhof because it is a Small Leading Hotel. I am rarely disappointed with any of the SLH member hotels, however, I was in for a real treat at this location. The owners of the hotel treat clients as pampered guests, catering to them in a hospitable, yet discreet manner. The staff is excellent, the cuisine first rate and the room that I had was exquisite. I would not hesitate to recommend this hotel to the most discerning traveler and look forward to a return visit - hopefully before too long a time!

“Highway Motel”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 13 January 2009

Der Alpenhof is not a bad hotel, but it’s not a great hotel either. The first surprise -that you can’t find in the guide or the website- is that the hotel borders a very fast road, where cars routinely drive at speeds above 100km/h. Standard rooms (300euros/night) have no bath, but just a shower for lack of space. Opening the windows is not an option, the noise from the road is simply too loud. The room price doesn’t include breakfast.
Internet is free, satellite channels are numerous and well organized on the television.
The staff is very friendly, but has obviously been instructed by management to favor the regular local customers. The food is nice, but very salty.
I would not recommend this hotel to my friends.

“a pleasant short stay in a beautiful place”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 3 September 2008

The staff are delightful and the hotel is clean.

The decor is based on local styles and the rooms are comfortable: the balconies are private with their own seating.

Unusually, one can also see the kitchen which is also clean although the food itself was not up to the standards of more moderately priced meals we had in Munich.

The hotel is beautifully situated between two mountains, if a little close to quite a fast bit of road which is, however, quiet at night.

Not quite as lyrical as the first reviewer but a very pleasant short stay with charming people in a beautiful Bavarian village. One would be happy to return.
