We were welcomed on the front steps of the Chateau by one of the pet cats with her afternoon snack in her mouth - a mouse. That might put off some, but we found it rather endearing and even she has got a job to do around the Chateau - pest control! Otherwise once inside the Comte greeted us warmly and showed us to our room which had been his grandad’s. Then he said to come down once we settled in and he'd give us some tips about where to go for dinner, etc. The room was beautiful with magnificent views over the grounds and the bathroom huge. We went down and sort of shuffled about awhile in the front entrance hall (where one of the other guests sat with her laptop on her lap) before he came back out to speak to us.
The next morning the breakfast was really nice with fresh croissants, toast, sweet breads, jam, cereal, etc (no cooked items). The Comte was there to talk to all of us and when we were leaving to tour around once again told us when we'd have to go to Mont St Michel, leaving no later than 4:30 to make it by 5:00 and then we'd have the place to ourselves and then to go to dinner. Before that we should go to Dinan and look about. Which is very nice, but we sort of felt like we were on a coach trip being told where and when to go. I know he is right and all, but that's just us. We like to roam about and see where it takes us.
I think 1 night would have sufficed as we will probably never be able to say again that we stayed in an authentic French Chateau, but as for value for money, unfortunately we felt that for €155/night there should have been more amenities - like a mini-fridge, TV (no, you don't want to sit and watch it all the time but it's nice for the news headlines in the mornings), tea/coffee facilities (though the bottled water was appreciated) and a swimming pool and it appeared that the WiFi only worked in the entrance hall and breakfast room, not throughout the house (these are the only 2 places I saw others using it – as we didn’t have a laptop, I don’t know that for certain). Also, it is sort of in the middle of nowhere and the small roads are not marked well. We tried to find a place nearby which did their own Calvados (recommended by the Comte and given directions) but we gave up after driving around for about 40 minutes seeing no sign at all of such a place. And having to drive to get a meal (even if it isn’t very far) is a bit of a bother.
Overall, a beautiful place with a fantastic owner who knew his history and told great stories, but really just a B&B – yes a very grand version, but it is still someone else’s house and as one reviewer said, you sort of didn’t know where you could wander as even the library which he showed us and said we could use was full of family photos and personal things. So, for us not as brilliant an experience as other tripadvisors have had. Shame TripAdvisor only lets you go from Average to Very Good as this place is certainly not average but I would say it is good, which would mean a 3.5 rating if we could give it such.
