“Not as laid back as one might think?”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 28 August 2011 via mobile

Spent a great couple of nights camping here. Surroundings were pretty nice too. The local pub was only a 15 minute walk which meant that we could enjoy a couple of pints before settling for the night. I would warn campers coming for a chilled out, relaxing break to be prepared to follow a lengthy amount of rules, some of which could be seen as a little pedantic. It is fair to say that many of these rules help to maintain this peaceful environment - your stay just might not be as laid back as a result. The site is very well set up, it has a campers shelter, a clean toilet and it's also very quiet.

This is a valuable and courteous review albeit being directed towards the Lazy Duck Hostel. Really it should be on Trip Advisor's Lazy Duck Campsite page but never mind, the same principles apply and it invites a similarly courteous response. What the reviewer calls 'rules' we refer in our pre visit postings to as 'arrangements' and for good reason. The distinction may be slight but it is important. For someone more accustomed to being ruled by rules as distinct from being guided by arrangements though it may be not so easy but let's try.

Our 'arrangements' have been devised after years of experience of making our visitors feel safe, looked after and assisted in any way open to us to help them enjoy their visit. Agreed, for some this might just result in information overkill. Our experience this year in particular though with a more even balance of well seasoned and highly experienced campers and hostellers and those first timers who happily profess themselves as novices has been that a clear explanation from us before they come of what is of offer and what is not makes for more smiling faces by far.

Determinedly both in the pre visit correspondence and again on arrival we draw attention to what visitors CAN do and what is on offer rather than what they cannot. They can expect the intimacy of a 4 pitch site. They can expect a fifth pitch to be offered to someone who walks or cycles in unannounced; we will not turn them away. They will have smallholding livestock - sheep, ducks, hens in the field over the fence from them. They should feel free to light the chimenea fire, use the hammocks in the trees, 'suffer' the adventurous bush shower and then award themselves a Certificate for Courage, wallow in the 2 person sauna, eat at the picnic table, light the candles in the Shelter, ask for home baked bread, help themselves to polytunnel produce in support of a children's charity, use our internet connection free and access the computer provided and arrange for any children to help feed the waterfowl at breakfast time.

And yes, without any apology from us, they are asked not to scorch the precious grass with careless use of their cooking stove and they are also asked to venture no closer to the waterfowl pond than the 'Welcoming Seat'. The pond banks can be slippery for children and the ducks have their right to space as well as the rest of us. They are asked to recycle waste most carefully and follow other requests for their own safety and enjoyment as well as for the well being of other guests. This includes minding the noise level after 11.00pm
These are 'arrangements' for civilized living in an elemental environment, the sort of place you though didn't exist any more.

The reviewer is generous in highlighting what he likes at The Lazy Duck and we are appreciate this. We agree the pre visit posting on our 'arrangements' could be viewed by some as lengthy, rather like this response. Let's just agree shall we that with three season visitors filling our few tent pitches constantly from all over the World, the safest way of ensuring a good time is had by all is to let you all know in advance just how we have learned to live with guests in this smallholding/hostel/camping ground/holiday cottage/woodman's hut six acres. "Say it as it is" said the wise man of the North. Then, as we say in the pre visit posting, please decide for yourself whether or not The Lazy Duck is the place for you. Most reviewers seem to go along with that one happily enough.

All the best,

David, Valery & L. Duck

“Unique Accommodation With A Very Warm Welcome”

We took Lazy Duck Hostel as a private rental. It was bliss! A really cosy, wood-built mountain-hut style place with lots of charm. Lots of visitors - ducks, other birds, Jango the dog and many squirrels. A fantastic base for exploring the Cairngorms and great to come back to the woodburner and covered garden at the end of the day with the bonus of evening woodland walks and a hammock amongst the heather. David and Valery made us and particularly the children very welcome. Many special moments including David helping my 8 year old Jackson let the ducks out in the morning and feed them at the pond. We'll be back! Jo, Jackson, Phyllis, Eddie, Ellie, Kristen, Victoria

“Warm hospitable stay in beautiful surroundings - can't wait to visit again”

I stayed at the Lazy duck Hostel for two nights in April 2011 with 5 other family members.

The hostel itself is wonderfully quirky with little windows by each bunk and a wood burning stove with plentiful supply of wood.

David & Valerie were very hospitable to show us the ropes and if we needed anything.

Combined with beautiful views of the cairngorms and a fantastic forest walk on the doorstep we had a lovely couple of nights here & I wouldn't hesitate to recommend the lazy duck hostel.

The only provisio that I can think is worth mentioning is that the stairs to the upstairs bunks are pretty steep and the four bunks downstairs are pretty close together if you have any snorers in tow (we did).

“Friendly, picturesque and fun!”

Had a great couple of nights at the Lazy Duck. The sleeping arrangements were quirky as they reminded me of childhood ascents to treehouses. The log burning stove provided much needed heat for the rural Scotish setting; perfect for a family meal freshly cooked on the outside BBQ. In addition, David and Valerie were the friendliest hosts I've ever met. The eggs we were given from their hens made an excellent breakfast before a walk in the lovely Scotish highlands.

“Bijou but beautiful - a home from home!”

I stayed at the Lazy Duck hostel for three nights with a group of friends. Two others were also booked in and we were a little wary of sharing such a small place with two strangers but we came away as good friends and we had a great time sharing the place with them. There's a chilled and laid back atmosphere about the place that you just don't find anywhere else. David and Valery were superb hosts, seeing to our every need (including Scrabble and custard - thanks very much!!). The wood burning stove is the focal point for the living room and it kept the place incredibly cosy despite the plummeting temperatures, snow and ice outside! All the facilities are excellent - the bathroom is warm and the power shower very welcome after a long day out in the mountains. The kitchen is excellently kitted out even for two separate groups cooking, though we ended up pooling resources and cooking together on the last night! The only drawback? The tea pot wasn't quite big enough for six at a time, but with the perpetually boiling kettle on the stove it was never a real problem!!
It is definitely a small place and if you're looking for a cosy romantic weekend for two, you might be wise to book the whole place out. For an alternative to a climbing hut or modern hostel, though, it's fantastic. I look forward to returning sometime very soon!
